    Default Vok Vs. Iron Lich

Now, I'm far too tired to research this properly until tomorrow (the joys of Uni holidays) but I'll simply draw peoples attention to 2 pictures:

    And, our old Friends...

A couple of Iron Lich from the 90's PC game Heretic, and a Vok... The Vok... It's a blurry line.

I'll give this some more thought tomorrow as to do with influences for computer graphic artists and writers of a certain 90's TV show. G'Night.

    *snip*
    Tell me about it:

I've got to say though, the similarities are quite similar really and it would be cool if they drew inspiration for the Vok from the Iron Lichs - Heretic is an awesome game though!

Ok, lets have a look at this.

Heretic, created by Raven Software and published by id Software in 1994, would put it in the right timeframe for the origins of the Beast Wars TV show.

This taken from the Doom Wiki:

"Iron Liches have the ability to cast three different kinds of elemental spells, all of which can inflict multiple hits and which include:

    * A wall of fire which spreads out vertically.
    * An ice ball which splits into multiple shards when it hits a target or a wall.
    * A tornado which relentlessly chases and throws players into the air if they get too close to it."

So they have powers of an elemental nature, or control over elemental forces, very much like the Vok.

And, well, just look at them. Similarities are striking.

I have no real doubt that graphic artists working for Mainframe would have known about Heretic as it was part of the wave of 3D shooters that came after Wolf3D.

Larry and Bob themselves may have played the game themselves. And when formulating the idea of the Vok and a visual representation (which wasn't seen until Season 3) they may have suggested them as a reference for something they were looking for.

All just speculation of course, but it's fun to speculate.

    Indeed mate,
Heretic was built using the 'Doom' Engine, titles like these are often referred to as Doom Clones, albeit with significant enhancements applied.

    If your curious, see here.

    I know eh!
Games back then seemed to take hours longer to complete compared to games today - Though the gaming industry today is predominantly quantity over quality and pretty graphics to satisfy the kids.

I loved Heretic and especially Hexen and I still to this day own the entirety of the Serpent Riders series , albeit Heretic II as that was too much of a departure for me.

It's perfectly within reason to assume that these games were being played/viewed by the guys behind Beast Wars because they were huge in their day and especially Heretic because it was one of the first decent FPS Fantasy games that drew a lot from H.P. Lovecraft - The similarities are SO similar though, but alas, indeed it is all speculative.

Heretic si good fun. So much so that I had to go back and start playing it the other day. Only a few levels in, but it's still alot of fun. Even though I can't configure the the controls to the way I like it, and mouse has no free look, still great fun.
