It's being faithful to the original cartoon version of Ultra Magnus, which the MP designers seem to prioritise with the gimmicks and features, which had no sign of an inner robot before Dreamwave retconned one into it. Going by the original series animation (best to watch on mute), the cab usually folds straight into the trailer to form the robot mode, or change colours as it morphs into the robot mode or truck mode.
There was one instance in the cartoon (The Rebirth I think) where he had the trailer appear and attach like Optimus Prime's trailer, but that could have been one animator assuming that the trailer was like Prime's, in that it wasn't part of the robot mode... or it was just done intentionally to visually match up to Optimus who was next to him.

A new pic from TF Expo posted by Cyclonus79 on TFW, confirming Magnus' paint job (inner legs) has been slightly amended as first seen in the blurry pic a week or so ago with Kobayashi holding him in hand.

A better pic from TFW user Monari

Seriously why do people want a white Optimus? That was the main complaint about almost all the Magnus releases post Dreamwave. Not to mention it would more then double the cost of the MP for a gimmick few people are going to display not to mention it would involve parts forming with the cost of reduced pose ability and articulation.

It also looks like some of you guys got your wish at least partially seems to have less red on the legs then before. He now has blue on the inner sides and a little bit of white just below the thighs. Personally I preferred the red on the lower legs as it had too much blue on it and it went well with the chest.

Because at least with the white Optimus hiding inside the big puffy blocky limbs that are very obviously blocking their own articulation (most blatantly on the elbows) and preventing dynamic posing (knees) can be justified. As it is now the figure looks like it has an MP-10 hiding in it just because it looks so squat and chibified in terms of proportions. I look at this figure and I see all the downsides of the white Optimus in armour paradigm without and of the bonuses.

I think something about the proportions of this one throws me off - for my money Citizen Stack looks superior on almost every level if we're talking an integrated cab Ultra Magnus (the head and perhaps the waist being the only exceptions).

The reason he looks squat is due to the fact he needs to scale in relation to the current masterpiece figures. In the cartoon Ultra Magnus is a similar size to Optimus in robot mode even though Optimus is just a cab and Magnus is the trailer and cab. Since we don't have mass shifting in real life with Transformers you need to put that extra mass somewhere and the most obvious place is making him squat and stocky. The resulting figure is still larger compared to MP10 but he doesn't completely dwarf him like citizen stack. Scale for phase 2 of the masterpiece line is extremely important in my opinion.

You're also forgetting about cost it has been noted that the lack of the white prime has made him much cheaper. With the added complexity of his trailer would you or everyone else be fine with paying over 300 USD for a white prime brick that needs to parts form? This Magnus is going to be half the price and considering what we're going to get it's a steal. Now even though he isn't out yet I can't say if he'll be worth that but I'm guessing he is going to be great considering Takara's past MP's and how he looks right now I'm quite pleased with how they went with him.

All I'll say on the matter is I'd be many many times more likely to pay in excess of $300 USD for a Masterpiece Magnus that has a fully functional MP Prime clone inner body and partsforming armour than however much they're charging for this, which is apparently $189 USD (tfsource).

That's more than they want for Citizen Stack, which as above looks much better, mainly because it doesn't sacrifice functionality and aesthetics for scale.

I be quite sure that hasbro will colour him brighter blue like what they did with Optimus
Personally, I'm not at all interested in Star Saber & very interested in Magnus (whom I've already pre-ordered). I'm actually surprised there's so much interest in SS - sure a lot of us have seen/own Victory on DVD now, but few of us grew up with the character.

The Star Saber toy looks good, but the character just doesn't hold much interest for me. Admittedly I'm happy with my Robotmasters Victory Saber (even if it doesn't come with Jan!).

I have not ever seen a starsaber cartoon episode.
I have however seen the toy once and maybe was wowed as a teenager but that's about it.

As for Magnus, I am more than happy with this result obviously there are some who wants it to come close to a g1 toy and disregard the cartoon accurate.
I am not a fan of buying toys above $300 mark if I can help it.

I've seen both Star Saber & his cartoon appearances. The original toy (and Robotmasters version - both have a Victory Leo option too) both do a better job of representing his cartoon portrayal than MP04 Ultra Magnus. Which is why I'm more excited about this MP Magnus.

From these new pics of Ultra Magnus from the expo it looks as if they may have gone with the chrome bumper after all. Which is nice.
