How to open a boxed toy without creasing / damaging the end tab?

Have you tried using that little hook at the end of a nail clipper's file? I must confess that this has never crossed my mind.

I use a Stanley knife but have to be careful not to cut anything.

I insert the blade between the card flap which hangs from the top (or bottom) of the box and lever them (gently!) apart, but only just enough to prevent them catching as I open the box.

Good question. The mass retail stuff like Hasbro's Generations packaging is particularly hard not to damage.

Use a ruler that isn't very thick, slide it all the way underneath the flap and lift slowly!

This. A metal rule, or a letter opener. Slide it in the side and use it to hold the tabs apart.
