I must check Dad's automotive paint tins outside tomorrow when it's light - I could swear that I saw a spray can of chrome paint, with the lid of the can that was chrome in style which indicated what the paint was meant to look like when dry. I don't think it was as expensive as you say, although it's probably not top quality.
Back in the day I think I also remember reading a 'do-it-yourself-chrome' tutorial for model parts, where you give the parts you want to make chrome multiple baths in various tubs of probably harmful chemicals.
Chrome spray paint is readily available here (except to under 18's) at around the same cost as any normal colour.
