Well Carol, given the movie is around the corner, I'd suspect in the next few months.

How did people know back in early internet times, that some toys were not released in either the US or Australie?

    Eg: Turbomasters, non combining constructicons

Did they see a pic of someones collection one day and say "wahhhh!! what toy is that???? By reagans beard ive never seen that one on sale!"

Before the internet was wide spread, did people know at all which toys had not been released in their countries?

I don't think we did really. We would only know that we and nobody else we knew could find it. Like Shockwave and the Deluxe Insecticons - I never found them and nobody I knew had them. But they appeared in catalogues so I assumed that they were around, just that nobody I knew could find them. As a kid I only got Transformers at shops or shopping centres that my mum would go to - it's not until you're old enough to take public transport on your own or drive that you can cast a much wider net when toy hunting.

And I had no knowledge of Japanese Transformers until about 1992 when I was exposed to Masterforce... dubbed - and while I always knew that the dubs where horrific, I didn't know that they'd actually majorly screwed up translations, so I actually though that Ginrai was Optimus Prime and that the Trainbots were the Dinobots. Whoever made the StarTV dubs needs to savaged in the janglies by a pack of vornskrs.

I knew which US toys weren't released in Australia - as long as you were a big fan who wasn't stupid or a liar, it wasn't too hard to realise that nobody had ever seen Shockwave, Sky Lynx or the Deluxe Insecticons on shelves (even though they were in catalogues. People who were stupid or liars thought 'Shackwave' was Shockwave and came in real Transformers packaging and said they had cartoon Skyfire or Unicron toys at home. I hated those kids, because other dumb kids really believed them.) I would personally have thought there were a few more Transformers we didn't get. Did anyone here seriously see Fortress Maximus on Australian shelves? Likewise, I know that in the UK, fans knew they didn't get Swoop, Shockwave etc. - they were even told so in the UK comic.

I didn't know at the time (when I was buying toys like Action Masters Tracks, Bombshell, Windmill, Thundercracker, Double Punch, Take-Off, Talon etc.) that those toys *weren't* released in the US. The internet and toy magazines told me so years later.

I know I knew there were Japanese only toys and I knew about Star Saber... I can't remember how I knew that though... Maybe from people I knew who went to Japan on holidays? I know I knew in the eighties that Japan had a different Astrotrain, because I saw a Japanese catalogue.

    P.S. Roller - I don't think I have any G2 (or even G1) toys you're looking for.

I have two memories of seeing Fortress Maximus in store. The first is a bit vague (from the first time I saw the 87 range in store) but the second is much stronger. Both times were in indepedent toy stores, one in Victoria and one in Queensland.

But now I have a question: Has anyone bought the new edition of Toyfare (#140) with the ROTF cover and coverage? I was wondering if there's a lot of TF content in it or if it's just a couple of pages? The previous Toyfare TF movie toy edition was quite broad and devoted a lot of pages to TF toys.
