Your handle in Japanese

As many of you know, my handle "Goktimus Prime" is a fusion of Optimus Prime and Son Gokuu from 西遊記　(Saiyuuki; "Journey to the West") - hence on Japanese boards I go by the name 孫コンボイ ("Son Convoy").

On the weekend I came up with a Japanese "translation" for Sofaman's nick which is "Couch Convoy" (カウチコンボイ; "kauchi konboi") which I thought was kinda neat cos of the alliteration. :) And we know that often a "Convoy" in Japan isn't necessarily a "Prime" in Anglophone markets, e.g.: Nitro Convoy -> Override, Flame Convoy -> Scourge, Megalo Convoy -> Metroplex etc. so it's perfectly within the realms of established English-Japanese naming conventions.

So if anyone particularly wants a Japanese version of their handle feel free to try and make one up and post here, or you can ask me and I'll see if I can make one. :)

This may not be possible for everyone. Some of you have handles which would effectively be the same in Japanese as it is in English, or simply "translate" directly into the Japanese name for the character you are named after.
e.g.
dirge = Dirge （ダージ; "daaji")
griffin = Griffin （グリフィン; "gurifin")
Rampage = Rampage　（ランページ; "ranpeeji"）
kup = Char　（チャー; "chaa")
Jetfire = Skyfire　（サカイファイア; "sukaifaia"）

It'd probably just be ガッツマンヘビー ("gattsuman hebii").

As I'm sure you know, Gutsman is just called Gutsman (ガッツマン; "gattusman") in Rockman. The Japanese word for heavy is 重い ("omoi") so if you want a more literal translation you could say: ガッツマン重い ("gattsuman omoi").

On a related note, if anyone knows where to find a decent English to Elvish translator so I can find out the Elvish translation (the name started out as my habitual CRPG character, who's an elf ranger) that'd be much appreciated.

Which particular language/dialect of Elvish are you looking for? Cos they're quite different.

Sindarin is the most common Elvish language when people usually think about Elvish. Quenya is probably the next most well known. There's other languages which aren't as widely known such as Quendian, Telerin, Nandorin, Avarin and Silvan.

I'm assuming you're talking about Tolkien Elvish, because there's other non-Tolkien Elvish languages too like Darnassian and Thalassian (Warcraft), Ssamath (Dungeons & Dragons) etc. link

liegeprime: Yours would be 主コンボイ ("Nushi Convoy"), but I would prefer to translate it as 破壊大帝コンボイ ("hakaitaitei konboi") or "Emperor of Destruction Convoy", combining the traditional title for a Decepticon leader in Japanese with the Japanese equivalent of Prime. :)

foor: does "foor" mean something? Otherwise it would just sound the same in Japanese.

What does sifun mean?

"Fun" means "faeces" in Japanese. :D e.g.: dog poo is inu no fun
Si is pronounced as "Shi" in Japanese which can mean "death", so I suppose "shifun" could be translated as "death sh!t." ;) :p I swear I'm not making this up!

Um, Soundblaster already comes from a Japanese Transformer name in the first place, so it would just be "Soundblaster" (サウンドブラスター)! :)

I'd translate it as バルキリー76号 (barukirii nanajuuroku-gou).

Now the Japanese word for a Norse Valkyrie is バルキューレ (barukyuure), which is similar to that machine translation, however the word for a Macross Valkyrie is バルキリー (barukirii), and I'm assuming that the latter is what your handle is in reference to (if not go with the former). :)

And 76号 (nanajuuroku-gou) just means #76 which is often attached onto names of jets, ships, giant robots (e.g.: Gigantor was called 鉄人28号 ("tetsujin nijuuhachi-gou"; or "Iron Man #28")), so I think adding that to the end of "Valkyrie" sounds cool and makes sense in a Japanese context. :D

Hmm... if you just directly translated "turtle boy" it would sound like you're referring to a male turtle, rather than a (human) boy who happens to be turtle (heh). So I think it would be best to keep the word "boy" in English, but the Japanese word for turtle is 亀 (kame), so I'd translate it as 亀ボーイ ("kame booi").

Another idea might be 鉄腕亀 ("tetsuwan kame") which means "mighty turtle"; this is from the Japanese name for Astroboy which is 鉄腕アトム ("mighty atom"). I think that sounds cooler. :)

I recommend 聖闘士 which can be pronounced as セイント ("seinto") and basically means "saint" or more literally "holy knight." :)

If you want to make it more phonetically similar to Saintly then... it depends what meaning you want for "~ly" (ri) - I can't think of any that sound cool off hand. Otherwise you could just have it written in Katakana so it'd be 聖闘士リ (seintori). (^_^)

Perhaps you're thinking of the French word for bread, which is spelt "pain" but pronounced like "pen." The Japanese word for bread comes from Spanish, which is "pan." French and Spanish are both Romance languages so their words for bread come from the Latin word "panis."

Now the Japanese word for Decepticon is Destron so I would translate your handle as 自動パントロン ("jidou pantoron") which means "automatic breadtron."

I thought about just using "Saint" long ago as a handle but there's no challenge if I'm already a saint. So I tagged "ly" at the end as a reminder that I need to better myself each day. So maybe try translating "befitting a saint". Thanks! :)
