Yes but with some notable exceptions, Transformer toys are typically out before any series. So for me it's usually - I see a toy, if it looks cool (or if I've had the opportunity to play around with someone else's) I'll get it... otherwise, I skip it - regardless of canonical appearance.

At least, that's how it used to be when I was a kid. Nowadays it's more like...

As an adult I often buy toys that I think are crap simply because the character made a canonical appearance and I wanted that toy-character for completion's sake. <facepalms.self> But I was a lot less discerning compared to today when I was collecting Energon (cos I was a single dude back then - having a family kinda makes you more picky and tight ).
