Indeed he is rather cute and yes I certainly did have trouble getting the gun in his hand , to the point where I was legitimately frightened I may break the post!
I found just very gently & slightly twisting it into place worked but the process has rubbed the blue paint away to reveal the black plastic underneath within his hand - Vinyl toys eh?
