It was before my time... But I'm pretty sure MP-02 had to be clearanced also. Despite his icon status, Ultra Magnus was portrayed as a very poor character, might be a hard sell at around $200 (depending on the Au$).

I don't think I remember seeing him on shelves myself, I know he was though , but I wasn't 100% back into TFs at that point either and at that time I certainly would never of spent $200 on a sole figure... My how that mindset has changed!

He definitely kept those shelves toasty warm.

Then, at the Targets around me, he just disappeared. Had it been a swift massive clearance? A return to manufacturer? Still don't know.

I do mean actively participating in the public TF community

Before joining OTCA in 2010 , I had a brief stint in the TFW2005 community in '08 but was promptly shown how insignificant my voice or opinion was there , and prior to that my only "goto" for TF discussion was 1Azrael1!

Hence you can see why my knowledge of things, prior to 2010, was extremely lacking.

Exactly. I remember the first Ultra Magnus and he was just an effort to get an additional sale with minimal extra effort. Without the trailer it isn't really Ultra Magnus. Having deliberately passed up MP02 I will jump at the opportunity to buy an Ultra Magnus with trailer.

Lets not forget that they wanted $250 for a mold that had already been available for $100. Ghost scream probably would have done just fine at the $100 price point. If Soundwave was $300 he'd be easier to find.

At $300 I don't think I'd be buying an MP soundwave, and I might have thought about Ghost Starscream if it had been $100.

I remember MP-04 being on shelves here for a few days before the introductory toy sale, I picked mine up the Afternoon before the toy sale at the sale price of $180 and by then there was less than half of the starting stock remaining on shelves. by the end of the next day that Target was clear and I only saw one or two at other targets in the proceeding week. Hearing about Purchases of $100 and under makes my brain hurt. I saw one sell at some point from a store in the city (where the EB Games is now in Galleries victoria) for $380 I think. I just can't imagine that toy ever shelf warming.
