But I did check on Royal Mail's website and it does state this

Your item, posted on 15/04/10 with reference RJ331144864GB has been passed to the overseas postal service for delivery in AUSTRALIA.
When did he say he actually sent it? He could have given you a dodgy reference ID or one that he has used recently. Ask him the date he sent it off. Still, I'd say to be on the safe side to still make a claim if it doesn't turn up in the next few days.
