I don't see anyone sit up and complain when Furman introduces a new character. Why? Because Furman's creations are plot elements and/or are used to further the stories. It's not there because he wanted to lay claim to having introduced some groundbreaking new character, which in Shane's instance with Drift seems to be the case because, when looked at as a whole, creating a 'new' character then featuring it heavily in AHM and then even giving it its own Spotlight issue, all stinks of a some self-serving purpose. It's not that I don't like Drift but more that I think Drift is unnecessary.
I still cannot see the need to create a character like Drift when there are a plethora of existing G1 characters that will fulfil the function that Drift does - eg: Defcon? Hot Rod even?
It just leaves a bad taste in the mouth.
The fact that Drift is going to be a toy does little to validate his existence. Toy companies and their marketing people will take any chance and make any toy if they think its going to bring in the dollars.
