Transformers questions by newbies, and not-so-newbies

Ok. I haven't read any IDW comics so I've been meaning to ask a question about Drift. Why am I always reading so much smack about him? What is it about him that everyone dislikes?

My thoughts are in this thread. Saying anything more about Drift is just a waste of time, and cyberspace.

Re Drift:
I don't see anyone sit up and complain when Furman introduces a new character. Why? Because Furman's creations are plot elements and/or are used to further the stories. It's not there because he wanted to lay claim to having introduced some groundbreaking new character, which in Shane's instance with Drift seems to be the case because, when looked at as a whole, creating a 'new' character then featuring it heavily in AHM and then even giving it its own Spotlight issue, all stinks of a some self-serving purpose. It's not that I don't like Drift but more that I think Drift is unnecessary.

I still cannot see the need to create a character like Drift when there are a plethora of existing G1 characters that will fulfil the function that Drift does - eg: Defcon? Hot Rod even?

It just leaves a bad taste in the mouth.

The fact that Drift is going to be a toy does little to validate his existence. Toy companies and their marketing people will take any chance and make any toy if they think its going to bring in the dollars.

Because you seem to be taking the AHM and Drift bashing very personally. Shane happens to take criticism of his work not so well and from what I hear, in a very similar manner as your previous post.

Heroic Decepticon has it spot on - It is not Drift the character people have a problem with but rather the way he was introduced into the franchise. IDW and McCarthy fell the need to shove him in the reader's faces as the coolest and most bad ass character ever at every chance they got hence the comparisons to Poochy the dog from the Simpsons which I am afraid is spot on. He even appeared in the Children's Robot Heroes story book!

He also adds nothing to the story rather than 'OMG look at how bad ass Drift is'.

Whenever Drift's not on panel, all the other characters should be asking "Where's Drift"?
