Actually Tetsuwan, it did indeed come into being as it was manifested in Backwards Compatibility of PSX and Ps2 games for the first run of Ps3s at which point they were priced at circa $1000.
My Brother bought his Ps3 during such times as he still owned, and still does , the 'Illegal' version of GTA San Andreas and it runs beautifully.
Unfortunately, all of the original line of Ps3s were being sold at a loss to Sony Corp so, for cost saving reasons, the second run they cut a lot of things out such as:

- 2x USB ports.
- 20Gb of HDD space.
- The Multi-card reader.
- Backwards compatibility

These things, apart from HDD Space, have not been returned to the Ps3s since, to my understanding anyway , so if anyone has an original release Ps3 just know you've got something pretty special.
