It looks like they've done the best they can to make the toy as show-like as possible. Remember that these toys cannot magically defy laws of reality like the cartoon has. Yes, the toy has more red, but that's because the alt mode's trailer has lots of red too. In the cartoon, these reds seem to vanish or just transform into blue (Kung Pow'd!). The G1 toy is very red, whereas MP Magnus has managed to reduce/isolate the red and allowed other colours to come through, such as a blue waist and white upper legs like the cartoon (these parts were all red on the G1 toy).

It'll be interesting to see what Hasbro does with the colours for this toy. If I were them I would:
+ Make the alt mode more toy-accurate by replacing the red bumper with silver chrome.
+ Give him yellow eyes, like the G1 box art and some G1 comic appearances
+ Give him red upper legs like the original toy and G1 comic model
+ Either give him a red waist like the G1 toy, or a white waist like the G1 comic. Probably the latter.
+ Maybe even a completely blue face, like the second (and more common) variant of G1 Ultra Magnus (the one w/ the lite painted white cab robot & plastic tyres )

Eh... Ultra Magnus' eye shape varied throughout G1.

I'm personally really stoked about this toy. I skipped the first MP Ultra Magnus, even when it became available here as a Target exclusive for $80.
