Solution: high casualty rate. Introduce some epic saga that just ends up slaughtering most of the original cast! Hey, we had plenty of such stories when we were kids growing up with G1! e.g. Transformers The Movie, The Underbase Saga, Target: 2006, Time Wars, On The Edge of Extinction etc., and various regular stories where characters would just be removed. And TF Prime certainly doesn't seem to adverse to doing this now... we've already seen the following characters bite the dust:
+ Cliffjumper
+ Skyquake
+ CyLAS (aka Leland Silas Bishop)
+ Dreadwing
+ Airachnid (presumably)
+ Wheeljack (?)
+ Optimus Prime

Although... it would be smarter to kill off characters AFTER they're no longer in production. I wonder if Cliffjumper's early demise might have anything to do with the slow movement of the toy. Conceptually I think Cliffjumper's a good toy -- not at all being a repaint of Bumblebee and all... yet he still pegwarms something chronic. Hasbro were a bit smarter during G1... kill off characters based on toys that are no longer in production, and have writers focus on new toys! They did the same with Beast Wars too.

Cheetor: "Jumpin' gyros, Optimus sure learns a new body fast!"
Rattrap: "Yeah well, whaddaya expect? He changes 'em often enough." <rimshot>
