Sure, there will be the 1% of employees that actively work to help a scalper. We've all heard stories about Toys R Us employees holding all the stock of limited release items and putting it up on ebay at a markup.
I can say from my own experience at Target, that big box retailers like Target, Big W, and Kmart have a highly casualised workforce. For a big event like the Toy Sales, most of the staff in that department are on many longer shifts in the week or two in the lead-up and so are aware of what's coming in. However we won't ever have an exact number. We can only say if we saw an item on the carts / shelves. And so, when trying to be helpful, that limited knowledge will cause u to come unstuck - particularly if under pressure on the first day of a sale/ the day before - we might never have seen it arrive, and so will say we don't think it's come in yet (it's not out of the question) but when in reality it came in a week ago and was sold out prior to the sale.
Yes, systems could be better, but please don't take that out on the floor staff who are working with what they've got. And don't accuse the 90% of people who work their butt off for you and aim to do right by you as the customer because of the 9% lazy ones, and 1% dodgy ones.
