I got Street Fighter IV on PS3 this morning. The first time I've bought a Street Fighter game since PSX. :p I realise that this game is old, but it's new to me. Anyway, I wasn't aware that the game was default set to English dub, and went ahead and started playing. The dub voices were as blissful to me as hearing nails running down a chalkboard, but I decided to keep on playing and switch the language to Japanese later. I was playing Ryu, and when I executed the Cyclone Kick, instead of the dub actor attempting to approximate Tatsu-maki-sen-puu-kyaku, he just grunts! Wow. He could've at least grunted, "I-mixed-some-FRUIT-cake!" or something.

i did generally enjoy playing in the beta but competitive or even casual online only just doesn't really appeal to me much any more. if it goes on sale i might bite. i think there was a trend among reviewers that there might not be enough 'game' to it to last and keep people happy, especially for the price so that's holding me back.

i took a few more screens but imgur is having a fit at the moment so i cant link the gallery.

Yeah the multiplayer only design is the reason I haven't bought it yet, don't play online much at all. Ah well, I know it's got some vs. Computer options so I might grab it on sale one day.

I'm using Humble a bit these days. They have separate deals to Steam so if I want a game and it's not on sale on Steam but is on sale at Humble I have no issue.

Also there is no issue with them not being "legit" like all the other keysellers. I've noticed there have been devs saying not to use any of them including GMG because they are stolen keys.

Lol, yes know EXACTLY what you're talking about there. Later on you change each individual character voice in the options. I left a few of them in English, Zangief's is a riot, as is Rufus. But Ryu. But Man hearing "Hadouken" in english, just with the different pronunciation, made me wanna cry.

Not sure. I buy a lot of console games and PC games from places other than Steam like Origin and GoG so it would take me a while to figure out mine.

For those of you with an Xbox One, Red Dead Redemption is coming to backwards compatibility. It's rolling out now, if you want to jump the queue and own a digital copy of RDR you can follow these instructions: http://www.icxm.net/x/red-dead-redemption-backward-compat-install.html

This is my documented experience with using the Steam Controller for those interested:

Intro

I have been following the development of the Steam Controller since it was announced a couple of years ago. I was greatly interested in it because it coincided with my then transition from the PC desk to a PC lounge room. Since just a year before that, I had become a late comer to modern Console gaming as I got a PS3 rather cheaply. My last console before that was an N64 and had been an exclusive PC gamer since. Although I only had the PS3 for the exclusives and playing blurays at the time (the latter has now become its main use along with Netflix), it did show me how much better a modern game can look on a big TV and how much more comfortable to play and immersive it can be as a result of that. From then, I was convinced that Lounge room PC gaming was a must and since PC versatility allows you to use any peripheral on it (from Atari Joysticks to Wii remotes and PS3 Controllers) it was worth a trial. Overall once I started playing in the living room on a TV, it didn't feel as good to come back to the small desk.

However there were a few compromises I had to make for this transition. First was that although I had gotten very used to using a PS3 controller for FPS and adventure type games, the thumbstick was nowhere near as accurate or graceful as a mouse. Games are playable within reason without being frustrating but there was a definite handicap. This was alright with me as I don't generally like playing competitive online games and as mentioned, it is good enough once I got the hang of it. The second compromise and possibly the most damning was that games made with the intention of using a mouse as the primary interface (RTS, RPGs, Turn based, etc.) were shockers with a traditional game controller like the PS3. Moving the thumbstick as a mouse is a mess, specially for quick actions or trying to precisely click at a small item or icon on screen. Even new turn based games that natively support controllers such as XCom were rather awkward. For this type of game, I simply had to go back to the desk or use a wireless mouse with an annoying plastic lap board as a surface which is not a comfortable set up.

I was really concerned about not being able to play mouse based games so I started looking at alternatives. And behold, I found out that Steam was already working on a solution for all the mouse related problems with the newly announced, Steam Controller.

The Steam Controller

The Steam Controller was designed to bring PC gaming to the living room. By design, it aims to be a controller that offers mouse like accuracy and compatibility with any type of PC game, from FPS shooters to Mouse interface based games such as Baldur's Gate, Civ or Stracraft. Yes, I mentioned older games because one of the highlights of the Steam Controller is that it is fully backwards compatible with any game.

To achieve mouse like accuracy, it uses two large (owl eyes) haptic feedback interfaces. On the original prototype, that is all it had aside from the shoulder buttons as their intention was infinite customisability. Basically the haptic feedback is supposed to 'simulate' the feel of button presses, scroll wheels, and even trackballs through timed vibrations. Even thumbsticks are supposed to be emulated in the haptic interface. However the bizarre look of the prototype without anything resembling traditional controls scared a lot of people away and received negative feedback. To compensate for this and regain greater gamer interest from the mainstream, they have now included in the final release a traditional thumbstick and buttons. They also molded the left Haptic feedback with a 'D-pad' cross to further appeal to players intimidated by the design.

Although fan reactions and companies trying to compensate for them often is detrimental to the final product, I have to agree that it was a good idea to also include traditional controls, specially during this transitional/adoption period . The haptic feedback interface require some getting used to and the Steam controller is highly reliant on user customisability through Steam - This is both its biggest strength and weakness as I will detail below.

https://scontent.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xtl1/v/t1.0-9/12651131_10153924818128735_2453197947108699723_n.j pg?oh=efbf20ddeeb3f3fa578c634a120385bb&oe=572F5431

Steam Controller - First impressions

I received the Steam Controller at my workplace, my first instinct was to plug it into my work laptop which does not have Steam or any games on it. To my surprise, Windows natively detected the controller as a mouse with all the features you would expect although without steam, it is not customisable. The right haptic feedback served as the mouse 'pad' and controlling the cursor with it was extremely smooth and accurate with not much of a learning curve (if any). It is worth mentioning that in this 'native' mode, the right haptic feedback interface is configured to be a trackball and you can feel the 'rolling' as you interact with it. The only strange thing is that for some reason, Valve decided to use the right trigger button as a 'left click' and the Left trigger button as the 'right click'. This was a bit odd to me but got used to it rather quickly. The left haptic feedback is used as a scroll wheel with a similar effect. I started to use the controller as a mouse while in the office, simply by opening applications, moving the cursor on word and even had a go at dragging selection squares on items, all worked really well, about as good as you would expect from a standard mouse.

When I got home, it was time to try the controller as it was meant to be used with Steam - First thing to note that the only way to get the most out of the controller is to run Steam in Big Picture mode. The regular mode will only give you basic functionality and you would not be able to change things while in game. Switching between modes is hardly an effort so this is not really a deterrent but can be a bit odd as I prefer the normal mode. In big picture mode, you can go and configure the controller as you wish, the customisability is truly endless - You can set up the haptic feedback panels to behave however you wish (joystick, mouse, buttons, etc) and also map keys to any button. Interestingly enough, if you are playing a game that requires lots of buttons, you can assign one of the buttons as a 'shift' type key that will give you a second set of customisable functions while you have it pressed similar to a keyboard - Great for games that have a lot of keys although I don't know any that has that many. Another very interesting feature is that the Steam controller has gyro mechanisms. You can enable it by simply pushing a button or touching one of the haptic feedback panels and physically moving/turning the controller in the air. You can also assign whatever action you wish to the Y and X axis such as mouse movement, scrolling, etc. For any action or feature you can also assign the sensitivity, speed, etc. In short, everything on this controller is customisable. One of the things that I enjoyed was that you can update the firmware of the controller wirelessly (which I did). This was a nice and easy process. Another thing that I also liked is that the controller as a beeping speaker (similar to old PCs) and you can change the start up and shutdown sound beep tunes - Useless but rather cool, I set mine up with what sounds like an Atari version of the Portal end game credits song 'This was a triumph..'.

https://scontent.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xla1/v/t1.0-9/12670586_10153924825218735_1816533954147994939_n.j pg?oh=d548cd713b8edd961fc58877e1a884e9&oe=572BFC7C

I decided to leave the control configurations as default to try them out. I noted that the right haptic controller was already configured as 'Joystick Camera'. First game to try is Fallout: New Vegas. I was previously playing it with a PS3 controller rather well and since it was fresh in my memory, it was a good comparison point. Upon bringing it up in my Steam Library, I got a notice saying that the game is not natively supported in bright yellow. That was fine which just means that this game was not made with the Steam Controller in mind. However playing games that were not directly designed for the controller is a feature that I was the most eager to try. Upon starting the game in Big Picture mode, it went to the New Vegas loading window. This was annoying as it placed Steam in the background and wouldn't let me click on 'Start Game' on it's interface - I had to use an actual mouse to start the game but I can forgive this as the game is not aware of Big Picture mode or the controller and I can always configure the game to bypass the startup window in the future and go straight to the game - However from a casual gamer/Newbie perspective, this is jarring.

Once in the in-game intro menus, the game responded very well to the controller which it seems to have detected it as a game controller, Xbox controller to be exact. That was fine with me as the physical buttons matched that and my main interest with the game was the accuracy of the camera. I loaded a level that had me just outside the Think Tank in Big MT and tried to look around...It was horrific. The camera movement was jerky and all over the place - Totally unplayable and very disappointing first game experience. I most definitely see a casual gamer or someone with little patience throwing the controller away and declaring it as shit without a second look. You can see these people all over the internet furiously complaining about the controller after their first few goes. However I don't give up that easily..

Configuring the Controller

I pressed the centre 'Steam' logo button on the controller and brought up the Big Picture interface and into the game controller configuration options. I changed the 'Joystick Camera' option on the right haptic interface to 'Mouse' and went back in the game. This made a world of difference, I was now able to control the camera more accurately look but still super slow and not smooth, not very useful if I am in frantic combat and the jerkiness was off-putting. Went back into the configuration settings and ran into an unfortunate bug in which a Steam loading screen appears and doesn't go away. This seems to be a software bug as you can cancel the loading screen, go back to the game and then try again and it will work. However this happened enough times to be annoying and should be fixed as it can turn off users. I went into the controller's advance mouse settings and started changing mouse smoothness and sensitivity. The configuration options also provide hints on the setting you are changing and one said to also increase the mouse sensitivity to maximum within game. After a few trials and probably 20 minutes of tweaking, I got the right balance and the mouse movement on the controller was remarkably smooth, accurate and fast. It was time to give it a real test!

Actually Playing an FPS game!

As anyone who has played the 'Old World Blues' Expansion of Fallout: New Vegas, this game is super hard. You can easily get jumped by multiple high level enemies and your VATS meter can quickly evaporate. Several of the confrontations end up in chaotic running, shooting and bashing in which the ability to accurate spin around while moving and attack is a must. As I was walking through Big MT (the large area where Old World Blues takes place) while using the controller to look around and getting used to the button functions, I got jumped by 4x Y-7 Trauma override Harnesses (a freaky automated body suit that carries a corpse inside), at the best of times, this is a difficult battle as everything in Big MT is levelled up and the AI is surprisingly good. I quickly exhausted my VATS meter on just one guy so it was up to me to manually fight the others while it generated. I was able to very accurately shoot them as I was running and turning around, something that a traditional mouse is best at and the Steam Controller felt just as capable. Then one of them came at me with a shishkebab (a flaming sword) so I went into melee combat with my own. It worked great, once again I was able to turn around quickly and accurately to attack as I was moving from cover to cover to avoid the remaining shooters. Once the melee guy was killed off, I used my generated VATS to kill the other and then tricked the other to get close and got it with a shotgun blast (no vats). Overall, I survived and the controller performed superbly, much better than the PS3 controller, specially with accuracy on smaller more accurate aiming and turn around actions. I will also add that for sniping, you can use a combination of the haptic pad and gyro for greater precision which is great.

https://scontent.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xpl1/v/t1.0-9/12717540_10153924822688735_7803885723898551410_n.j pg?oh=a2818136f9f005b5df8e6839c730ed8a&oe=57315021

FPS style combat was a great success with the Steam Controller and that's on a game that was never designed for it! I continued playing as normal until I came across a locked door. I tried to pick it but unfortunately the haptic pad was very unresponsive when turning the lock which requires careful precessions. However I quickly discovered that it was infinitely easier to use the Gyro control on the lock so I was able to lock pick by simply turning the controller physically in the air which was a more satisfying experience - Another success!

https://scontent.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xpf1/t31.0-8/12657362_10153924826628735_7007525201777504137_o.j pg

I continued playing the expansion all the way to conclusion. Finished several of the Sink AI retrieval quests and even fought Dr Mobius' Giant Scorpion. All very smooth and more accurate than the PS3 controller. The only drawback that I could see was that it can get tricky to get used to the physical button placements as they are down further and centre than other controllers. However this is by no means un-ergonomic, just needs getting used to.

Extra features & Conclusion

I have not tried the controller with any other game yet but all FPS games play similarly, that means that I can always use the configuration I made for New Vegas for other games without spending more time tweaking. Steam also allows you to set up multiple configurations for different games and share them with your own games or online with other users. Next, I will probably try a more mouse 'point&click' oriented game such as an RTS or XCOM. Maybe to keep the theme, I will use the original Fallout. :)

For games that require actual keyboard typing input, the controller software features an onscreen keyboard that can be interacted with the two haptic feedback pads at the same time and looks very useful. Much easier and faster to type with than on a PS3 controller. As Valve promised, pretty much every aspect of PC gaming is covered by the controller. However it has too much of a learning curve to be inviting to new users and the need to tweak it and configure out of the box for optimal functionality can be a turn off. However if you persists, you would be greatly rewarded. Strangely enough, I suspect that people who already use traditional PS3/Xbox controllers would have a harder time adapting while people who use Mouse & Keyboard setups may find it easier. PC gamers like to customise and that is certainly on offer. The mouse style responsiveness is also there, may not be 100% but it is close and I noticed that the more I played, the more I got used to it and the better I got. The Steam Controller has now supplanted the PS3 controller as my preferred gaming option on PC and I don't see that changing, in fact I see it as improving as the Steam controller is so versatile and customisable that future software updates could make a huge gradually progressing difference.

Far more likely that because everyone reviewing 2K's PC games has to submit system specs the game has been optimised for much of the hardware used in the reviews. Like how Batman Arkham Knight is only optimised on a very small set of hardware.

Rooster Teeth are not journalist, they are clearly paid to advertise games. Game Informer always protest their innocence but they are clearly not journalist either being owned by Gamestop (Gamestop is known as EB Games in Australia).

Giant Bomb, Gamespot, IGN, the now defunct Game Trailers and Polygon are are real journalist and not paid off by publishers for reviews. Do not confuse ads for journalism.

The reason for Gerstmann-gate back in the day was the firewall between the ad sales people and the journalist, which every journalistic organisation has in place, broke down and ad sales people were able to get the journalist punished, which in Jeff's case resulted in his firing since he was EiC.

Now lets never bring up ethics in journalism again please.

Sorry for asking a stupid question, but how did you find all that info? I'm interested to find out how many hours, and how much I've spent over the years.

someone on another forum mentioned a website that will find it for you:

On a lighter note. Anyone ever use a "gaming" mouse pad? I need a new mouse pad and want something better than a square piece of wetsuit material.

i also have a razer one, with dragon age 2 art on it. it's quite nice! (the pad, not the game haha)

I've been gaming a very long time, been through many pads and very expensive mice. I've spent probably about $2000 on mice alone in the past 10 odd years. And with all of them nothing has beat this...

Probably isn't the exact one I have, but the general good gel support pads. Don't go cheap though (like this image), I get the ones that are around $30 - 50.

I'm going through Wolfenstein: New Order at the moment. I'm actually liking it a fair bit and enjoying the attempts at plot and story plus collecting crap.

I think next on my to do list will be Pillars of Eternity. I got up to the final battle and just couldn't get through it after about 10 attempts. I think I need to load an earlier save and change my party and craft some food but I can't be bothered right now.

I bought a $60 gaming mouse like 7 years ago and still being used and in excellent condition. Only in the last couple of years did I start using it less and less for games due to the living room transition but still used it for mouse driven games like RTSs and turn based.

Before that, I was buying cheap mice and they didn't last more than 5-6 months.

One that I'll say, _every_ single razor product I've ever bought. I've had to return from it breaking or being faulty. I've not had a single item from them yet that has done me any good. I don't know if it's just been bad luck, or if they truly makes terrible crap. Same goes for ATI/AMD graphics cards. When I was doing graphics programming, I went through about 10 video cards in 2 years. I was using multiple machines and blew up every single ATI card I was using, to this day I've still yet to kill any Nvidia card, no matter how hard I thrash it. But not a single ATI card from the past 10 - 15 years in my life is working now :D So one might say from experience I absolutely hate Razor and ATI :D

no it was the obsidian kickstarter rpg. good game, but man this last boss battle is ridiculous. i think you need a really well optimised party for it.

I have been using Razor mice on and off for years, I actually just got a new one last week. I either ware them out after years of use, or buy a new mouse just because I want a new one because I've had the old mouse for so long.

As for ATI/AMD. The days when they could build a card that was both cheaper than Nvidia's and performed as well or better are behind them but I've always found them reliable. I've never had a video card "blow up". Cheap crappy PSU's yes, but silicon, no. I actually had a run of bad luck with Nvidia cards over the years causing random crashes and BSOD's. It really was random luck as to if you would get a good or bad card. These days both Nvidia and AMD's partners make good cards, especially if buy from someone like Asus, EVGA or Gigabyte. The only issue with AMD cards are driver support, top end performance and performance per watt.

Has anyone played Rise of the Tomb Raider on PC with the minimum specs? I'm running a GeForce GTX 660 and it's done me well for everything so far (the minimum is a GTX 650.) But I know the new Tomb Raider is pretty intensive, and Steam is recommending a GTX 980 or something.

Don't really want to upgrade the card if I can avoid it (even then I could probably only afford one of the mid range ones) but I really enjoyed the last Tomb Raider and I don't really want to play the new one on sub-par settings for fear it might ruin it . :(

I've only played it on Xbox One but I have been keeping up with what's going on with the PC version. If you turn up the graphics settings it really pushes your hardware's limits. Kotaku has a bunch of benchmarks (http://kotaku.com/rise-of-the-tomb-raider-pc-benchmarks-steep-demands-1756350619), keep in mind that they only tested on high and very high, if you turn down your settings the 23 fps they got on your card will be higher for you. The game looks great on Xbox One, which is a low end PC, so don't be too worried about how it will look if you turn everything down.

PS2 had some cracking games on there. I have mine all boxed up in the garage but will bust it out one day when I have a place big enough to build a man cave :p

The missus did get me the Sega Megadrive reissue console that is floating around now. Kinda disappointed. The games are great, and a lot harder than I remember, but the controllers are terrible. They are wireless (I would have preferred wired) so there is a very noticeable lag between button pressing and response in game which is a killer on old school games. Not to mention that the technology in the controller requires perfect line of sight to operate. That is impossible when my 2 year old is running around and constantly going between the controller and console.

It was great fun though playing games like original Sonic, Mortal Kombat and Golden Axe again.

I got my start as a Pokemon Trainer with Yellow but not sure I could go back and play first gen again though.

Hopefully they've removed the "There is already a save file. Are you sure you want to overwrite?" prompt.

The game has far too many prompts. Even in the latest games, I wish there was a way to turn off the confirmation prompts for "Do you want to give a nickname for the Pokemon you just caught" (no I never do!) and the "Are you sure you want to give up learning X move" prompts" (Yes I'm sure I don't want that move).

The SteamVR has made everything else look obsolete. It detects your physical movements like arms and leg motion and instead of using a PS4/XBox controller, you have dedicated hand grips that help you interact with the world in a more natural way.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CyjSRGJdd7o

I was blown away by just the act of stepping closer to the edge and and reaching out to touch the whale. To me, Oculus and Sony VR are merely supplanting the TV and camera controls with a VR headset. SteamVR seems to be more forward thinking of what can be done with the technology when it comes to immersion.

Yep, full use of the technology that I feel HTC is more ready to accomplish given their demos - Basically a 'You are there' experience. The rest seem a bit too 'Mega-CD' in the sense that they are using VR technology as a gimmick without any real substance or taking potential of what the technology offers.

I will not be an early adopter for this technology. It is too much of an investment to simply jump in without any real consumer test. It could easily end up as a Virtual Boy or more precisely a 'Wii Fit' in the sense that it has wide spread interest and may even have great sales but ultimately becomes nothing more than a gimmick and forgotten shortly after.

I downloaded Borderlands, something something stories, an episodic game majigger from the PSN. Just Ep1 so far as it was free. While it has very a interesting story (so far) I find the *ahem* gameplay (used rather loosely here) somewhat non-existent. It's sort of like a cross between a crap point and click game with some quick time events. Sure the conversation arcs are an interesting outcome, but the QTE and other bits of game just aren't enough to hold my attention.

Glad I didn't pay for it.

GOG is great, so much fun stuff there

I've picked up some old gems from them before. Syndicate, Syberia 1 + 2 and maybe the enhanced editions of the Baldur's Gate games.

Interesting, I've been playing the GoG version using a GTX 960 with no issues, and it's basically the same architecture.
GoG do tend to work on games to make them more compatible with modern systems a little bit better than Steam does.

I've recently had to re-install windows since my previous install shat itself in epic proportions, not a single restore/reset option would work.

And due to my system being a Mac Pro, it was a rather convoluted process.

Remove GTX960, replace old GPU to access EFI/boot menu as the 960 isn't properly supported.
Backup documents/steam folders.
Straight install of Windows 10. Oops, no valid serial for Win10 (I'd upgraded from Win 7 originally) and Apple don't support Windows 10 on my machine (not a major issue, just a pain with dual booting configs without the Apple software).
Install Win 7 Ultimate I'd burnt the iso for. Oops, serial number is for Pro
Install Win 7 Pro.
Install Apple's Bootcamp software.
Reboot.
Activate Windows.
Serial not valid for activation.
Call 1300 number to activate.
Install Windows 10 (finally)
Install drivers for audio interface, Steam and GoG Galaxy.

Next step (probably tomorrow now) will be to swap the GPU's over again, and I might be finally able to play my games again.

Then I'll have to continue my childproofing/cable routing.

Your adding in some extra steps there. First you can jump straight from Windows to OSX through the Bootcamp settings in Windows, no need to swap cards to see the UEFI. Second you DO NOT have to reinstall Windows 7 to install Windows 10. Microsoft updated Windows 10 so that it accepts Windows 7 and 8 keys as activation for Windows 10.

Starting with the November update, Windows 10 (Version 1511) can be activated using some Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1 product keys. For more info, see the section Activating Windows 10 (Version 1511 or higher) using a Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows 8.1 product key in this topic.

Bootcamp software won't install directly on Windows 10, doesn't support Win10 on my machine (trust me, I tried) - that means I'd have no boot into Mac option, requiring a UEFI compatible GPU to access the boot menu upon reboot, hence the install Win 7, Bootcamp, Win 10 procedure.

I really do make things hard for myself.

As for the serial key thing, I guess I hadn't run the latest updates at that stage.

Ok so I see here (https://support.apple.com/en-au/HT204990) that Apple doesn't support Windows 10 on any Mac Pro other than the trashcan Mac Pro.

I used to have a Mac Pro also and used it for Windows gaming. When a new version of Windows came out I would have to install the Apple software by running the installer manually via the CMD. There is a hardware version check built into Apple's app you are meant to run, but the actual work is done by a secondary app, I believe it's a .msi app. If you run that .msi via the CMD you will be able to install drivers in an unsupported version of Windows.

But really I would recommend you give up using a cheesegrater Mac Pro. The last hardware rev before the trashcan was released in 2010 with a minor speed bump in 2012. A cheap gaming PC like this one (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n2L1-k9Z3uI) will be much faster than a 6 year old (or more) Mac Pro. Apple has abandoned real gamers in favor of iPhone gamers. Much as I love their products I do not recommend their hardware for any gaming.

Agreed, though I don't game enough to warrant an entirely new machine, and this Mac is my main photo processing workstation in OS X so I can't really replace it completely yet. For a machine released in 2008 it's handled anything I can throw at it with only a few small upgrades along the way.

Just got an interesting email from Oculus.

Hi Nik,

We know you're anxious to receive your Oculus Rift and apologize for not updating your order status sooner. We've been working through an unexpected component shortage, and unfortunately, that issue has impacted the original shipping estimates for some early customers.

We're working hard to get up-to-date ship windows, and you should expect to see your order status updated on oculus.com by Tuesday, April 12. Although many Rifts will be arriving on schedule and in line with original estimates, we'll be covering shipping and handling costs for all orders placed through today.

We're shipping rifts everyday. Don't hesitate to reach out to the Oculus support team if you have additional questions.

So I'm guessing that I will get my Rift even later than June, but I won't have to pay the stupidly high shipping charge. So good and bad news???

I've got to give Bloodborne another shot. I started playing late one night and by about 3am i still hadn't finished the first level lol. Each time i restarted my patience was going down and down which only made it worse. I think the art direction is good but i came to it after playing MGSV, so the slower frame rate was quite noticeable.

Have had some luck at the bargain bin recently, picking up Blazblue Continuum Shift Extend and Metal Gear Rising for 100Y each, both on PS3. Blazblue i already have on PS Vita (as well as a newer version) but for that price, couldn't resist. MGR I have wanted to try for a while.. will have to wait though, i just finished Devil May Cry 1 and starting 2 on the HD collection that i picked up last week. Probably my affinity for these kind of games is why i suck at Bloodborne :o

"Poorly optimised" is one way to put it. Giant Bomb had the PC version crash the PC on every PC they tried it on when they walked up to the first Bonfire (save point). They reported it to the devs but they didn't fix it for launch and there is now a very long thread on the Steam forums about it.

This new one tho seems to have little to do with Volleyball and more to do with just being creepy. Having the girls including Marie Rose who looks like a tween and not an adult do striptease really makes me think the target audience for this game is perverts and not guys that like a sports game with a little eye candy. Also apparently the amount of new content compared to recycled content is disappointing for a full priced game.

I was going to order it from Play Asia but the actual criticism of it and not the sensationalist criticism of it really put me off. If they made a pure Volleyball game with the DOA girls I'd be all over it, but this isn't it.

There's an FCC listing for a new piece of hardware from an applicant that happens to be using the Xbox teams FCC ID number and it's under NDA at the FCC till Microsoft's press briefing at E3. I bet new consoles coming from both companies this Christmas. I am disappointed to see Sony is using the AMD Jaguar architecture again instead of AMD's new Zen architecture that's going to be out by the end of the year. I guess I should go to EB Games and preorder tomorrow. With the current consoles that they released 3 years ago EB Games had them in the computer months before E3.

Yeah I loved the first game as well. It was a perfect wind-down game and since you could have your own music playing in the game (if you had uploaded it to your Xbox) I would just sit in the beanbag for hours casually playing and listening to some upbeat jams. :)

I never bothered with the second one as I didn't buy an Xbox360 (went the PS3 route for WFC) and apparently the boobs independently jiggling made you seasick :p

The more I read about this new game the more dissapointed Im feeling. Apparently the volleyball itself sucks and yeah - I'm totally not keen on them having a tween character like Marie Rose in it. Thats ok for the perverts I guess, but if you perfer your DOAX characters to be actual women (and of the.. ahem... full figured upstairs persuasion) its an odd inclusion. Im digging the other new character though, Honoka - she looks awesome! :D

But it's all a moot point at the moment because I cant afford a PS4 anyway :o

If it's Japanese, it won't play on a consoles as they are US region locked. However if on a PS3/4, I believe it's region free when it comes to games.

Also the games were always made for pervs, let's be honest here ;)

For the current gen, only Wii U & 3DS are region locked. DOAX3 is for PS Vita and PS4, so you're good to go. If you buy the Asia version it has English text too, Play-Asia has it here http://www.play-asia.com/search/Dead+or+Alive+Xtreme+3

The only thing is, if you want to get any of the paid DLC, you need to be logged into a PSN account for the region the game is from. You can still download patches regardless of what region PSN account you're using.

On PS4, you can setup different profiles to use different region PSN accounts easily. On PS Vita it's possible but too much hassle, you have to do a format each time you switch.

And on region locking Xbox 360 had optional region locking for the developers to implement. Mostly for licencing and region restrictions. There are tons of 360 disk that are region free tho. But the Xbox One is not only region free for disk but you can easily buy digital games from other regions with very little effort. I have several indie games that have never been released here (thank you Aussie government for insisting all games have to be submitted for ratings and only enforcing it on Xbox) that I bought digitally over Xbox Live.

As for DOA fighting games, I love fighting games and this generation I have put many more hours into DOA5LR than MKX or SFV. I found MKX is great but it grew old fast. SFV has some major issues still (patch it Capcom!). But DOA5LR despite being an uprezed verson of a 360 game I played some time ago has stuck with me because the combat is really fun and I feel that even tho I can't pull of their more insane moves I can still do well at it.

I just want the game to continue so I can do missions with my guys because IF you can get a team of all high level operatives with the best upgrades it really becomes a different game where you are not stressed that you might loose people you care about and instead you are going to have a bit of fun flanking some aliens.

Note that I only played on easy. I didn't want to stress out too much over a game, but even easy is freaking hard.

I'll give my impressions on Stellaris on Monday if it unlocks at 12:01am on Monday. As someone that loves the Civ games but have never quite found a 4X game in space that I liked I'm hopeful this one will be the one. If it isn't, Steam return policy FTW.

Need some advice from anyone with a custom built arcade cabinet. Look to build one myself but not sure what I'm going to use as my base - PCB board, pc or raspberry PI. PC gives you more options on what you can play on it because Windows runs more emulators than anything else and it has a ton more power than a Pi. But of course a Pi uses far less power and therefore cooling is not an issue. If you go PC I suggest Mameui for Arcade games, if you want more recommended emulators for other platforms let me know.

Not too disappointed, the first one was brilliant, but the Marvel series was garbage and the Star Wars one had no replayability. Not being able to use whoever, whenever was the killer.

Wonder if this will improve sales for Dimension and Skylanders, or if they're next?

News of this broke just before the Giant Bombcast was done recording this weeks episode. Jeff Gerstmann said that when Lego Dimensions entered the market last year the revenue of the Toys To Life market didn't expand, it just shrank the share of the market that Skylanders, Disney Infinity and Nintendo Amiibo had. Might have been room for Skylanders and Infinity but not for Amiibo and Lego also, someone had to loose.

I wonder if we will see a new Skylanders at E3 and if Nintendo will continue the Amiibo with the NX. At work I sell far more Infinity figures than any other Toys To Life stuff, but really sales of all of them have plummeted off a cliff.

Hope you price matched to Big W. We had the game (till it sold out) for $59, I paid $56 for it with staff discount so I really wasn't expecting anything great going into the game because if a brand new $100 game can be had for $56 how good can it be??? But I was really happy with the games campaign, it feels great killing Demons leaping around.

For those of you that have a gaming PC you might be surprised that it can get great frame rates at high settings without having a Titan X. I have a GTX 970 and I'm getting 60fps with dips to 55fps on Ultra settings at 1440p.

So I'm estimating $250 to $300AU savings by buying from Amazon. Great job Australian retail!

I'm waiting for confirmation from Silverstone but it looks like my small form factor case doesn't need a blower GPU and instead works best with fan based coolers. That should lower the price of my 1080 a lot since I won't have to use a Founders Edition. Now if somebody would hurry up and announce their non-reference design that would be great because I need new shiny!

I have a small form factor Silverstone case and it is like the best case I ever bought. Fits most full sized Graphics cards, two 3.5" HDD drives and a DVD/Bluray drive. Cooling is awesome as all air vents out through the sides and since it's small factor, you can place it anywhere as long as the sides are not obstructed which is easy to do due to small size.

PS3 Dead or Alive 5
PS3 Super Street Fighter 4
PS3 Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale
PS3 The King of Fighters XII

Was looking for a cheap Ps3 game, just for giggles and picked up the new Strider game on a whim (well, slightly... I do love the first Strider) and damn I am loving it. Nice references to the earlier games, incredibly fast gameplay and wonderful platforming challenges. there are some funny bits though. In one section, I had to climb a wall with a moving saw on it, yet in the background, there was an unreachable flight of stairs that led exactly to where I wanted to go!

Having a blast. I really miss awesome side scrolling platformers.

Speaking of which, I also managed to find Rayman for my Saturn as well. That's an infuriating beast, but I haven't yet gotten to the point of frustration. Sure, it's hard, but you can always see the way through, you just have to practice. About my only complaint would be that sometimes the only way through is through memory.

I've never actually played the original Rayman, that too was on my list for Saturn one day. It looks like it'd be hard because it's so zoomed in?

A good(relatively speaking!) platformer along those lines from that era was Gex... at least i remember it being kinda funny with lots of pop-culture one-liners!

The 2d Gex was Ok, I liked the game mechanics of him sticking to the walls and stuff. The one liners got a bit tiresome, iirc. Man that takes me back, I had that on the Ps1 ages ago. The 3d ones were ok and I found them rather interesting for the time, but I think they probably suffer the "early polygon platforming" issues if played now.

As for Quake, I did have it, and it was super impressive for the Saturn, but in a moment of um, something related to insanity, I sold it. Sad, I know. Rayman's big sprites and zoomed in look is OK as most of the time you can take the game at your own pace.

I was game hinting the other day and bumped into a game called Nanatsukaze no shima (http://www.hardcoregaming101.net/nanatsukaze/nanatsukaze.htm) (7 Winds Island's Story). While the back of the box doesn't look like much, its got some very impressive sprites and is incredibly charming. Also all Japanese, which is making life interesting. I do need the practice reading though, so that's a good thing. One of those chill games that while you play, you actually relax.
The only other game that has had that effect on me would have to be Flower.

I dig Duke nukem, which appears to be the one Saturn game I've never seen in Japan. I wonder if it actually got released?

On a personal level I bet Microsoft's will be good for me since their franchises really appeal to me, but there's going to be tons of crap thrown at them because they have up to 5 hardware related announcements to make and people seem to hate Microsoft hardware announcements.

For those not following the industry as close as me they are expected to announce an Xbox Chromecast competitor, an Xbox Apple TV competitor, an Xbox One slim, a next generation Xbox One currently codenamed Scorpio and possibly Xbox games (as in the actual Xbox version not a port) running on PC as part of Project Helix.

Sony has said they will not talk about the PS4 Neo so no new hardware from Sony other than the already announced PSVR so they will hopefully have tons of first party games coming this year because I was disappointed how few they released last year.

Gears 4, Halo Wars 2, Dead Rising 4 and Recore all look great to me.

As someone with a high end gaming PC but all my IRL friends are on Xbox it's great to see Xbox Play Anywhere coming together. Hopefully they can get all the 3rd parties onboard. I would by the Xbox Play Anywhere versions of PC games just because of my IRL friends being on Xbox.

Also I preordered the Xbox Scorpio, but I will cancel it if Xbox Play Anywhere gets 3rd parties onboard because gaming PC trumps console.

Also it didn't get announced but earlier today Xbox One and 360 digital games started showing up on people ready to install list on Windows 10 for a little while, so they may still be bringing Xbox game support for existing games to Windows 10.

Am I the only one here that most (not all) of Sony's exclusives don't appeal to?

I feel like Gran Turismo is second rate to Forza and the various Codemasters racing games.

Killzone has always been just another brown coloured shooter to me.

Much as I love the stories for Naughty Dog's Uncharted and Last of Us I feel like the gun play is not as satisfying as other games and the movement doesn't feel fluid like Assassin's Creed.

Each God of War gets old for me after a couple of hours of gameplay of doing the same attack over and over.

The very Japanese stuff they have like Last Guardian, Ico and Shadow of the Colossus don't appeal to me either.

That said I do enjoy the better Ratchet and Clank games, I just wish they went for quality and not quantity with how many of them they make. Also I really love the 4 Infamous games. I actually bought my PS4 for the two PS4 Infamous games.

The game was totally awesome. The batarang though is kinda poxy lol. But looks nice on my shelves between the Batman chess pieces. I like to buy special editions of most games i love. Like Death's mask from Darksiders 2. Another great game I love revisiting.

I've got you all beat... Months before i left Aus, i bought 7 PS4 games ahead of buying the console once i got to Japan. None of them were the main reason i wanted one either (Street Fighter V, which wasn't out at the time). Also i'm yet to even play one of them since getting the machine (Dark Souls 2). I shouldn't be proud of this :o Oh and i also got an anniversary Dual shock 4 (a cool backup only, no one to play with) and Hori Joystick too!

I kinda surprised that Sony didn't make a peep about the Neo at E3. Even when Andrew House said in the interview the week before E3 they wouldn't talk about it I was thinking "yeah, SURE your not going to talk about it". With the deadline for games to support the Neo coming up in September it can't be far off being talked about.

I am a little concerned tho after listening to the Giant Bomb E3 show that Neo support might not be well implemented in the first batch of games. Apparently devs have had to scramble to get Neo support into their games because Sony literally only told them at GDC and apparently it's not enough time to implement support by September.

Forcing everyone to have support for the Neo might not be the best idea. But then again Microsoft's approach where only one game supports HDR on the Xbox One S might not be good either.

What's this thing about Microsoft selling games compatible with both XBONE and Windows 10?

Are they trying to get out of the console hardware business and re-establishing the Windows gaming platform?

It's called Project Helix. Stage one is the 12 games announced at E3 this year as Xbox Play Anywhere games. You buy the Xbox digital version and you can download it to Windows 10. I have already bought Forza Horizon 3 Digital Ultimate Edition for Xbox One. When the game unlocks on Xbox I can then download it on Windows 10. So I plan to start downloading it on PC the second it unlocks, but I'll play the Xbox One version while the PC version downloads. Windows 10 does not have preloading yet, hence the wait for release to download.

As for later stages of Project Helix. Microsoft is trying to get everyone from the big guys like Activision, Bethesda, EA and Ubisoft to support it, right down to the little one person indy devs. So hopefully every new game that is on Xbox One will have a Windows 10 Store version included if they make a PC version of the game. But unlike the version you download from Steam it will have Xbox Live as it's social back end. Which is great for me because everyone I know IRL is on Xbox, so I can play with them from my PC. Of course there are people who don't want Xbox Live as the backend so they can still buy the Steam or GoG version. I think most people will still buy the Steam version but the Xbox version is an option. Note that it appears PC players don't have to pay for Gold to play online.

As for the final stage of Project Helix. It appears Microsoft plans to allow all Xbox One games (including backwards compatible 360 and Original Xbox games) to eventually be playable on PC. There is a lot of talk from industry insiders that Microsoft is planning this. There was even a moment a the day before E3 that Xbox One and Xbox 360 games temporarily showed up as installable games in peoples Windows 10 Store.

Microsoft want more people to buy Xbox games, remember they get a $10 cut of every $60 USD game sold and an extra cut if it's a digital Xbox One game. So they are basically taking the Xbox One install base from 20 million or so consoles to the nearly 1 billion Windows 10 devices. They will keep selling consoles for people that want that experience, but if you want to play games on PC they got you covered there too.

did you get one?

Got my 1080 finally. Not going 100% smoothly. Got some graphics corruption earlier today, but an uninstall of the Nvidia drivers and reinstall seems to have fixed it. Got some odd slowdown in GTA V. The map screen on GTA V has never loaded 100% smoothly on console or PC, but the map screen really seems to chugging now. Also areas of the game world that really chug on other platforms seem to be an issue on the 1080. It's really funny to go from 100+fps down to a momentary 0.

Doom runs silky smooth sometimes hitting the 165fps limit of my monitor.

That's all I've tested properly so far, but did try a little Overwatch and it seemed silky smooth also.

It will take a couple of months for Nvidia to squash every bug the can in the drivers and then devs might still have to patch their games on top of that depending on the issue. That's what you have to put up with on the bleeding edge of PC hardware.

Man GTA V on PC is a mess. It keeps pegging all my CPU cores at 100% which apparently is a common issue. The better the graphics card you have the better CPU you need because apparently the more pixels the game pushes the more CPU horsepower it needs. For those of you not technically inclined that shouldn't happen, normally the CPU load for a game caps out at a point and the GPU takes all the rest of the load and if you have enough GPU horsepower these days you can get frame rates up to 200hz on high end displays.

I am actually thinking of using this as an excuse to buy a 6700k or even a CPU on the X99-3 platform just for GTA V. I know this is insane, but gadget lust is just as strong for PC builders as plastic crack is for Transformers collectors.

Today's Game Ready Nvidia driver seems to have fixed the graphics corruption issues I was having and also a couple of little niggles with the Windows desktop. I get the feeling that Nvidia pushed out the 1080 before it was 100% ready. I hate being an unwitting beta tester.

And damn what an ending to the series... Some closure, throwbacks to the earlier games and hints to the next...

In other news, finally getting a new monitor to replace the pair of aging Dell SE198FPW's sitting on my desk. Getting a Samsung 29" 21:9 monitor (2560x1080) and hoping my GTX 960 is enough to drive it.
