Quite interesting seeing our different playstyles on Mas Effect 3 multiplayer

I play a bit of everything to keep my promotions even, but my favourite has to be the Quarian Engineer (female). Toss down a rocket turret to protect me while I let loose with ice and fire blasts in that order for cryo explosions.

It took me a while to get into Skyward Sword, but when I did, I really got attached and immersed in the world. Once you begin getting upgrades and more items while tackling tougher dungeons you won't be able to stop until it's finished.

Really though a good game shouldn't make you slog through crap to get to the good parts. It should make you WANT to play to get to the Better parts. Not force you to play through crap to get to the good parts. I'm going to assume that I am just a grumpy old man, but Skyward Sword's irritating legnth of the 'tutorial' section and the inability to speed up the speech text just drove me mad.

the ting that annoyed me most was the guide chick (I forget her name). I got to the first 'dungeon'.
landed in the forest.
there is a volcano with a smoke ring around it dead centre of the screen.
There is a path in front of me pointing to the aforementioned volcano. Only one path.
Sword Chicky :Use me to divine the way.

Me: No, I can see the way
words Chicky: use me to divine the way.
Me: Shuttup, let me play the game.
Sword Chicky: use me to divine the way.
Me: turning off game and sticking it on ebay.

I don't believe how much I LOATHED Skyward sword.:D

One can say the same with...
Navi: HEY LISTEN!!

:D:p

But yeah skyward sword does have a lot of hand holding through Fi. To my memory I didn't have wait that much longer pass the first dungeon before I became invested in the game. The end story and plot twists along with fun puzzle's as you progress keeps you going and the challenge you have to go through before you get some good weapon upgrades were fun and rewarding.

Collected all the remaining heart pieces on A link Between Worlds, now just have 1 side quest and the street pass stuff to do then onto hero mode some time in the future

as for Skyward sword, I didn't like it as much as Ocarina but it was still very fun, I didn't' end up taking MASSIVE breaks between starting and completing it though and yes Fi was rather annoying at times. but there wasn't really anything wrong with the game, the items, dungeons and story were all good

I'm hoping the upcoming Wii U Zelda game (not Hyrule Warriors) will be even better

I concede that yes even though Skyward Sword was a good game, Fi did grate on my nerves a fair bit.

Knocked off Arkham Origins yesterday. Good little game, pretty much a carbon copy of City, but I am not complaining. Story wasn't as quite as "Whooo" as the other two, but it was amusing enough for me to have felt like I got my money's worth.

Some of the fights with the bosses were a tad annoying. I found BanE a pain;) especially when he went to his venom charge thing, so bloody hard to dodge out of the way sometimes, and the final fight, as I was unsure for a long time how to do it, then when I worked out what t do, tight areas and camera in wrong spot issues meant Batman got more of an ass whipping than he should have as I couldn't see what was going on.

Now to finish the challenges and what not.

I finished the story, very early this morning. Agree it was good but too much a copy of Arkham City. Exploring the same parts of Gotham was a bit boring and the new weapons weren't all that useful. Flying seemed easier, at least the training challenges were definitely much easier.

I was disappointed to find the game has a post story bug that stops the Triangle button working - so I can't interrogate enemies I need to in order to complete tasks, I can't do silent takedowns. I will probably finish off the extortion files, and whatever the still locked Most Wanted villain is, but then this is a game I'll trade.

One negative side effect. After playing for about 5+ hours last night until about 3am in the morning, when I got in my car and pulled out of my driveway I had a moment where I blinked to turn on my Detective Vision. :o

Oh wow. That post game bug is annoyuing then. Just realised that I havent doen most of the stealth challenges, so am currently trying to do them. This game was somewhat lacking in the stealth rooms, which is sad as I really liked that aspect of the series. Having trouble with 'distract a baddy with the sonic batarang' one. Anyone got any tips?

as for the detective vision, well, I had a week or so of getting in my car and seeing things "that looked like good ramps" after playing too much GTA...:p

The one you've got to do three times? If so that was an easy one, just throw it at the floor near one and sneak up behind when he investigates. I'm stuck on the four exotic take downs because I've run out of rooms. I also couldn't get the 20 critical hits in one free flow either so I'm stuck on that series of challenges too.

Apparently the button error can go if you restart but it comes back.

Finished Kingdom Hearts 1.5 Remix tonight! I've never played these games before and playing the games back to back, it was quite fun but not feeling the love for the series?

I love the Final Fantasy series and I love Disney but the story in this mash up was disappointing. In Kingdom Hearts, it was basic and lacked depth. Then in Chain of Memories it added a bunch of new characters and an absurd plot (not to mention they use the words "chain of memories", "Namine" and "darkness" way too many times). Finally, 358/2 Days is just plain confusing. I still enjoyed the games though and can't wait until 2.5 Remix comes out :D. Going to give up on the rest of the trophies as they're such a grind.

I'm just over halfway on arkham origins, and I know I won't finish the challenges before the story is over as the "finish in 12x mode" challenge wouldn't get crossed off until about the 10th time I did it. I'm at Bane now so I presume I'm quickly running out of time!

Also started lego marvel while some mates were over, it is fun but all too similar to the other lego games. The voice acting is fantastic but Spider-Man takes all the cake with the flurry of one liners as well as being fun to play as.

I'm playing that at the moment. I agree it is a bit samey as the other ones.
I do prefer the city you can roam around in though.
And Spider-Man is great fun. I keep spying Deadpool around the place though. I was hoping he would have a bigger role, but I guess he wouldn't be the most PG guy around....

Dragonball battle of Z arrived today from ozgameshop so I have the Goku as naruto costume I'll never use.

This will be a game that I'll likely never play much of, unless the demo was a vast misrepresentation of the actual game. I'll never understand a fighting game that has only one button you mash to fight, bugger all tutorials and no way to genuinely avoid long range blast attacks when there is a whole class of characters whose entire shtick is long range blasts...

Here's hoping it's more than the "team management" game that rumours would have it classed as. If only they could release either a free roaming Dragonball Z rpg or something more akin to Budokai 3. :(

South Park: The stick of Truth is being modified for the Australian release despite the new R18+ rating. Apparently the classification board still has not gotten the fact that adults also play games.

They are promising that the game will be good and everything I can see about it does sound promising. However it seems I will need to hunt down an international release as ours will be incomplete.

South Park: The Stick of Truth didn’t make it past the Australian Classification Board in uncut form, and in order to secure release in the country, Obsidian has had to replace certain scenes with text descriptions and an image of a crying koala.

When Australian players reach this section, they will be confronted by an image of a crying koala accompanying a vivid text description of the events. The Board ruled that the text descriptions are allowable as humour.

I am not surprised. The people on the ratings board will more than likely be old fossils.

On my end, I decided to hook up my PS2 Slim and play some old Playstation games. First playing Medieval, but now I need to find a new copy. A word of warning when cracking out your old PS2 Slim, the lens ribbon will more than likely have stayed flat, and when the lens moves, will push up and scratch your disc. Took a quick youtube search to find that out. Too late to stop my Medieval disc from getting too scratched to play unfortunately. To fix that, you have to move the lens manually, and basically loosen up the ribbon by pushing it back down as the lens moves.

So that ruined my day, I decided to play Legacy Of Kain Soul Reaver, and discovered something quite cool. I'd found out that you can avoid being attacked by Vampire Hunters (and the other humans won't run away I would assume) during the course of the game by not attacking the first one you come across. Always my first reaction to being attacked was to kill them. This time I left him alone and continued on and killed the vampires you come across. Then the next hunter I came across got down on his knees and praises you. I thought that was pretty neat.

My old PS3 died a couple of weeks ago from the common affliction of YLOD (Yellow Light Of Death). I bought a new super slim one but I figured I may as well try to resurrect the old one.

Apparently all I need to do is melt some mother board copper connectors back in place with a heat gun. Then clean up the old thermal paste, add some fresh paste, pull it all back together again and that's it - Should turn on Ok. I am borrowing a heat gun on the weekend so we'll see what happens. The way I see it, I have a 50/50 chance.

The thing is that I already have a new super slim PS3 so if I bring this guy back to life, I am not sure if I should sell it or keep it as a collector item since it's one of the big first release models.

I'd use it until it burns out again, better than putting the slim one quicker to the fritz. Although the new Slim one I got has been pretty good, no issues yet at all. I got two of them, both have about 500 hours or so of game time racked up on them each. And so far flawless.

Good luck with the repairs though, let us know the outcome :)

THe thing that would be annoying me would be the loss of game saves, or can you transfer the hard drive from the older PS3's to the slim ones?

Im looking forward to the South park game, but unsure when Ill get it. I do not get time to game much anymore and still have to start GTA, and finish Battle of Z, Assassins 4, DMC and a few others.

I have tried this in the past. You can only backup and restore to the same unit. So yeah, my saved games were a loss when the PS3 died :(

Even if I resurrect it, I still took the HD out and the old PS3 has a thing to format every time one is re-insert it even if to the same unit.

You seem sure the old HDD will be formatted when reinserted into the old PS3. If this is not the case you can use the data transfer utility to move all data to a new PS3 (even copy protected saves).

I tried that once, failed miserably. I have old backups so we'll see but most of the newer game saves are gone.

In regards to formatting. The old PS3 formats as soon as you turn it on after inserting a HDD even if you remove and immediately re-plug the same one.

However this is not the case with the Super Slim. If it detects the PS3 software in it and it's from the same unit, it boots up as if you never removed it.

I'm just wondering if they have used characters from previous games, with a tweak or two to be the "big bad" (thinking early on side mission in Origins or side mission near the end of City) or if it is a altogether new character.

I have heard it can be a bit buggy. Did you notice anything and what were you playing it on?

I think most of the buggy complaints were from consoles. I'm playing on Steam.

The only bug I encountered was an animation bug during a battle which obscured my half of the battle screen with a frozen Professor Chaos. I think the cause of this was my very uncharacteristic clickmashing for no particular reason at the time which must have forced some kind of input which interrupted the animation. I still won the battle though as sounds and the other half of the battle screen was still working. :D

Also I think the Steam version is uncensored, but I bought my copy off some dude from the UK on ebay so maybe that makes a difference?

Played that as I used to be a huge fan of Diablo 1 and 2. However Diablo III had me bored to death by the 2nd chapter so I stopped playing.

Note that if you buy an overseas copy or Amazon steam key for Stick of Truth, you will not be able to install it.

In short, Steam has to adhere to local law and the uncensored version of the game is banned so if you try to install it, it will stop you with a:

"Not available for purchase in your country" as soon as you try to install.

I got around it by using the free VPN Spotflux that changes your IP address to a US one. This finally allows you to install the game. After the installation and update, probably best to turn off the VPN and launch Steam in offline mode every time you want to play.

If you bought the censored Australian PC version. Here is a 'patch' that uncensors it:

I had assumed the Autosave feature would keep my game if I let my mate have a go and start a new game of his own. Turns out because I had not done a save slot I lost the lot! Had just finished the abortion clinic quest and had done most of the side quests. So pissed off - had done so damn much in it! Now just starting all over again as a Thief since I was playing as a warrior the first time. :(

Well you could count the games I have bought over the last few years on the one hand of a clumsy carpenter. I'm more of a gardener than a gamer these days so my experience with saving games on the PS3 is somewhat minimal.

Hey, thanks man I really appreciate the offer, but earlier tonight a family friend told me he had a copy of Banjo Tooie that he would give me for free since his N64 is busted and he's never going to play it again.

I still really appreciate the offer though and if he didn't have it I would have definitely taken you up on that offer (assuming you did manage to find a copy amongst your cartridges.) :)

and I agree completely, Nuts & Bolts was absolute garbage. I got it for $16 not long after it came out, played it for all of 5 minutes before putting it back in it's case, never to be played again, and to this day I still feel cheated out of that $16

Thanks but I would prefer a legit version.

I use the Dolphin emulator to play games as ultimately, it's superior as it allows you to play on HD with enhancements. Technically the backup would work fine since I like to extract ROMS from the disc for fast load times but I prefer to own the game.

On another note, I have been bitten by the Nintendo bug in the last few months and I have begun to buy gameboys in a state of disrepair and fixing them. Recently I found my old gameboy with the screen cover missing and while surfing online, saw several website dedicated to restoring/repairing them.

Recently I was given an N64 which brought back memories and now tempted to go the extra mile(s) and buy a NES and SNES to 'reclaim my childhood' sort of collecting.

Old consoles don't really work too well on new TVs so they would mostly be there to 'collect' not really to play (Although I think that may apply mostly to the N64 due to the scaler but not '2D' consoles). The only usable part are the controllers given all the USB adapters there are for PC and awesome emulators out there.

kurdt_the_goat
22nd April 2014, 03:33 PM
Have you heard of XRGB Mini Framemeister? The cost and difficulty obtaining one put me right off, but with the right mods and connections, the results are supposed to be incredible for old consoles on new tvs.

Myself, i semi-reluctantly held onto a 68cm Sony CRT when the analog signals went off... it's a beast! It's much nicer to play my old games on it - most are S-Video, a few are running through Component... but regardless of connection it just feels right to be playing on an old TV! Almost broke my back several times lifting the damn thing though!

A few weeks ago i spotted on Gumtree a Neo Geo AES with a bunch of games. These things are still hell pricey, but i got a decent deal i think, paid $250 for the lot and will try and offload some game doubles soon to recoup a bit. Anyone here have one?

I'm in two minds about getting more games for it... on the one hand, they are awesome things to have/collect - massive boxes and cartridges with beautiful artwork - plugging one in is euphoric, watching it start up instantly (no system updates!). I've emulated the games one way or another several times over the years but even then, nothing was like turning it on for the first time and having the 'arcade at home' experience! On the other hand... i've emulated the games one way or another several times over the years! So the price to pay to say i'm legit is a hard one to swallow.

I think i've resigned to collecting some of the cheaper, earlier releases - which works out good cause those also tend to be the one's i remember most from my trips to the arcade as a young'n.

kup
22nd April 2014, 07:04 PM
Yeah the XRGB is certainly cool. However it may only be practical for the hardcore with lots of living space, not for people living in Sydney units for sure :) Big TVs occupy too much space and it ends up causing a choice between a 'new' Plasma/LCD or the old CRT beast due to space restriction. Naturally the 'new' will always win.

Emulators work just as well if you use a classic controller or even better if you wish to add enhancements. I think that for most people, collecting the real thing and playing on emulators is more practical.

Still, really cool that there is such a thing as the XRGB. Perhaps some newer TVs will take that into account and have that built in some day :)

Congrats on your NEO GEO. It is one of those high end consoles only a few (the rich) really had. It has a bit of a wow factor for that and the Arcade games it had.

Edit: Jeebus! $500 for the XRGB-mini FRAMEMEISTER! Wow! Yeah I'll stick to the emulator and USB adapter for the controller, thank you :p

Yeah, my philosophy is more about bringing the old games to the modern world.

I just think that if I were a kid, I would have preferred to play the game on a giant screen on my living room than some crappy CRT. Didn't you ever have dreams of playing the games on a grand 'Cinema' scale type screen? A modern 50"-80" Plasma/LCD is the closest thing so my method is still works for me better and judging by those prices, possibly more cost effective ;)

Started Halo 4 over the weekend. It's so good to have some fresh content, I've run thorough Halo 3 on legendary with skulls twice already.

I'm pretty happy with the new 343 Industries style. Loving the Promethian Knights, etc as enemies. Such a cool style. Their tech seem kind of Cybertronian to me, especially the weapons.

The screen is a bit cramped now with all the visor details around the edges.

I just purchased Deus Ex and Dark Siders 2 on the wii u.. I have darksiders 2 on the ps3 but I barely started playing it and my ps3 broke, the eye won't read :-/ I hear the resolution is better on both games and the fixed a few issues from the other consoles versions, so, I'm looking forward to it.

If just the fans start when you press the power button then the motherboard has popped.

Cool thanks Kup, in theory if I get exactly the same motherboard can I just swap the old one out? Theres a few conflicting articles on the net.

yes you can. I am assuming you are using a standard ATX motherboard of course.

Yep standard ATX - I think I will get the files off as suggested by hursti then try and replace it - that way if I destroy it or get to a point of no return then it won't be all doom and gloom.:D

Yep, Kup's on the ball! ;)

Definitely make sure you get all your files backed up at the very least, your HDD will hopefully be ok but it's good policy to have duplicates of everything that is important.

Hope to hear some good news at some point dude. :)

Deus ex directors cut on the wii-u is on par, if not the best edition of the game that has been released, the same cannot be said for darksiders II.

The guys who ported the game managed to lower the frame rate of the game even when they removed details from the environment and some texturing here and there.

The ratings system in the UK is different to Australia's which ends up in different age ratings for the same games. Previously many UK R rated games were classed as MA15+ here. I suspect even now, they aren't on par, but there we go.

Just know that any DLC you buy for these other region games needs the appropriate region PSN account.

Just got Deadpool for the PS3 - it's sorta hack'n'slash meets the Arkham games though with not as many cool tools. A good game but certainly not the best I've played by far.

The humor is so fricken spot on for the character though! :D Him blowing his own head off while Cable is talking to him about coming back from the future with a dire warning because he was getting so bored, mocking Veritigo for having the lamest power ever while going in a high pitched voice "Oh no, I'm getting diz-zy, whatever shall I do!' - fab stuff! You get to slap the crap out of an unconscious Wolverine while DP offers up gem after gem quips and after a while he goes "And most of all, I'm slapping you because this has added another 5 minutes of playtime to my game!"

Some of the cut scenes are hilarious as well - only a short way through the game and I'm playing more to see the next joke than anything :D

Well, I can tell you now that part 1 of your difficulties is that your trying to run DOS-based programs written in the 90s, on a computer running Windows 8 (Well known to be unfriendly towards backwards compatibilty for even Vista-era software) which only has an emulated (poorly) version of DOS :p - But we'll see what we can work out. ;):)

Had our last game today:o Funny since it came out in 2008, I didn't get it until maybe 2009/10. That's still a good 3/4 years of gameplay from that bugger.

The only other game I have match that would be Various Street Fighters and Ultima V (which I am still trying to finish...)

Been playing a bit of Sonic Lost Worlds on 3ds. Can't really be sure whether I like it or not. When you play as Sonic it is fairly fun and the Mario Galaxy-esque gameplay style is pretty cool and has lots of potential for good level design and therefore a great game experience. It looks great for a 3ds game and the 3d is pretty shmick as well.

Sadly though there are lots of levels based purely on the "Colour power" (carried over from Sonic Colours), which I don't dislike as such, it's just when the whole level requires you to be using the power. It then takes away all feeling of a Sonic game and turns it into something else. It also doesn't help the the power adds an addition time limit to the game as you run out of juice (usually results in instant death). And on top of that you get very little time to get used to the pros and cons of each power before having to go through a level of it.

Hrm, looks like I dislike more than I like. Back you go little fella. Cheers guys ;) :D:(

Reasonably priced is unfortunately not much different to standard price for 3DS games... ie in the vicinity of $50-$55 Ozgameshop (http://www.ozgameshop.com/) is cheaper for most than anywhere except buying used from EB games.

Last gun as in a rank 10 version, or a rank 1 of a gun you were missing?

Rank 1.. it was the particle rifle, and I was disappointed with it. I know its only level 1, but dunno if I can be arsed to keep trying to level it up.

What are the minimum specs for a "good" gaming PC?

Speed of processor (quad-core/dual core/single?)
Memory size/type
Graphics chip
HDD (SATA/SSD)

What would you recommend for a high school student? Playing minecraft and such? Windows 8.1? or a different version?

This is my current set up and although it's a bit old now, it is able to run any modern game at full graphics:

- CPU - Intel I7 2600K 3.8Ghz Processor
- RAM 16GB G.Skill DDR3 PC3-12800 RipjawsZ Series
- Asrock Socket 1115 Z77 Motherboard
- SATA 1TB
- SATA 500GB
- Graphics Nvidia 660ti 2GB

- Windows 7 is my preferred OS as it's not bloated and crap like 8.

With the above, I have been set for a number of years without having to upgrade. All new games work great and found nothing that struggles so far.

Naturally if you aim for the contemporary equivalents of the CPU (and in turn MB) and graphics card, you will be set. An SSD HDD would always be preferred for fast loads but a SATA drive will do and load times are still almost non existent, specially when compared to console load times.

Win7
Intel i5-4690K CPU (i7 has no benefits for gaming, save the cash).
8gig ram, no game needs more.
One of the Nvidia 770 series gpu (I would preference Nvidia over Radeon for the better driver support.
SSD is better, but much more expensive, optional.

Overkill for minecraft but if you want to throw off the oppressive console shackles it's a fine rig.

That's the only Ultra Rare that I can't find myself on the PS3 version. Was driving me mad. I'd say call it a win and quit though. Pump your effort into ME4 when it comes out ;)

Having just finished AC$, I can say it most certainly is. Don't go on the templar hunt missions as one of them is extraordinarily glitchy. Instead hunt for Mayan stones (once you can). Sail everywhere, especially early on, as it will save you alot of time once fast travel becomes an option. Upgrade your ship as often as you can as well, enjoy being a pirate as it is the best part of the game.

Ever played a game and you just felt like destroying the controller? That's pretty much how I feel in zombie u at the moment, lol. I really rated the game highly till I came to the stage where you get captured and used as survival entertainment for the crowd (kind of like what merl was running in the walking dead)... I must have died about 20 times (worst kind of sad face)

Speaking of which, I ended up taking Sonic Lost Worlds back to the shop and getting Rise of the Dark spark instead (the only game I am even remotely interested in ATM).

I decided that it was ok, the sections as Sonic were good and interesting, but there were many flaws. for example:

Snow boarding level requiring jumping up 'steps' and across chasms. No indication the you were coming to a step. Seriously, you couldn't distiguish a step from the flat ground even with 3d. Chasms were the same, well until you fell through on.
Bad camera. In a spuedo 3d world, if you went back the camera was so close you would walk off the edge without having a chance to noctice.
Colour powers taing whole levels. the colour powers from Sonic Colours are back. While I like the idea and some of them are fun, they force a strict time limit on you as you will often have a level where you need to keep the colour power charged.
Whole colour power levels. When the powers are short bits in a generally sonic level, you can deal with it. When it's a whole friggin level you're not playing Sonic anymore. One underwater level ended up like Starfox, minus the shooting and fun bits.
Story. I know people don't play Sonic for the story (or at all atm), so I wonder why they even bother. Epsecially since they all revolve around Eggman/Robotnic losing control of whatever devious item/monster he has acquired. Again. This has been the 'story' of practically every Sonic game since Sonic Adventure.

Most of those things should have been picked up on in testing.
Is it too much to ask for a good sonic game anymore? I suspect it's due to the original Sonic Team having been scattered. No-one is able to provide good direction for the little blue bugger.

Was really dissapointed when I say the review of Rise of the Dark Spark on 'Good Game' on the ABC, made me not want to watch the show anymore. :(

Not because they scored the game poorly (it didn't deserve much better) but that Hex (the girl i had a crush on for a few years) talked about 'Yeah, I hardly felt the need to use the weapons, using the melee weapon was much more effective'. This is only true for the first part of the first level so it meant that she played it for about 20 minutes but still went on air and presented a review like she had played the whole game :(. Very dissppointing and casts doubt on all their reviews in my opinion.

It is a very crappy game though, extremely crappy for that fact. A casual fan friend bought it by mistake thinking it was WFC/FOC after I recommended those games. He complained it was the crappiest game he had played in a long time, I knew it was weird as he said he picked it up for PS4 and confirmed it was indeed that Rise of Dark Spark. I told him it was just a crappy ass game to promote the movie and that the proper games were out on PS3 and PC.

Sorry to say but it does seem like a crappy ass game. Both the hosts liked the previous WFC/FOC games so they have no bias against TF games. This game is just substandard.

Oh dont get me wrong, Im in complete agreement with you - it is a crappy game. It just annoyed me that this woman was reviewing it on television and was talking like she had played the whole thing but for those that have played it, it was very evident she had only played the first 20 minutes of the first level and that was it. Don't bother with reviews honestly, ask consumers on image-boards and forums etc. Fun fact, 'gaming journalism' (Which is filled with people who did not even study journalism...) is so corrupt it can't make the lowest bar of an integrity test.

Was given the wonderful 101 for the wii u as a present. It's an interesting game, very sailor moon/ sentai in both style and presentation. It's fun and silly however the controls are crudtacular, often unresponsive, it is almost impossible to tell what is going on during battles and the points system is erratic and nonsical.

If you like pink in, but thought it was too serious, this is a game to get, lots of silly fun but can get frustrating.

What are some good games for friends to play online on the 3DS?
My 3 best friends and I each own a 3DS but one of my friends is living in Japan right now but he wants to be able.to play games with us still.
Any games with an online mode will do, but preferably if you know of any games sorta similar to Phantasy Star Online (and Phantasy Star Online 2) so RPGs really.

There's nothing really like PSO on 3DS. Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate is vaguely similar... and will have online play when it releases early next year (sooner for Japan)... but they'll probably lock out playing with Japanese players! So the answer is, get a Vita and PSO2 if you haven't already :)

It's been confirmerd that Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate will have region free multiplayer for North America and Europe, but not sure if you'll be able to play with Japan though. I think Pokemon X & Y has a multiplayer component, maybe just battles and trading, not sure. There's always Mario Kart 7 and Animal Crossing: New Leaf, both addictive.

Rage is a FPS post apocalyptic game. Made by id Software, the guys that gave you Doom, Quake and Wolfenstein. No RPG elemants, but you can craft ammunition and items from pickups via schematics. You can get the game pretty cheap now, around the $15-$20 mark. Recommended.

Warning:

Be very careful with dealing with this pawn shop when it comes to vintage games/consoles: http://www.buysellpawncessnock.com.au/Games.html

This is a Pawn shop that supposedly specializes with vintage games and consoles. They are based in Cessnock NSW, near Newcastle.

I spoke on the phone with Roger, one of the people working there about buying an NES. I asked if the NES they were advertising was in good condition and if they shipped to Sydney. He seemed very personable on the phone and told me that the NES was in excellent condition, not yellowed and without any missing parts or anything broken off.

The next day I receive the console by courier which to their credit was a very fast delivery. Unfortunately the console inside was in the worse condition that I would have ever anticipated. From underneath all the vent grids were broken off and on top of that there was a huge hole big enough to fit 3 fingers through. All the corners of the console had been grinded round as if someone was scraping it against a brick wall. The front lid was some cheap repro that was blank and dind't even say 'Nintendo' so the whole console had an 'OEM/No frills' look to it. On top of that the controllers were yellowed and everything was dirty.

When I called to ask what's going on, he tried to make excuses that all NES consoles are in that condition due to age - However that's not what he told me when I made the order! After I mentioned that, he started with bad attitude that there was nothing wrong with it and that's when I asked for my Money back as I could not trust him to replace the console with something closer to what he originally promised.

He agreed to refund me including the shipping cost but given that he was deliberately deceitful in the condition of the console and hoping I would just roll over on it to avoid trouble, I am sceptical he will once the console reaches him. At least I paid by credit card so I could always take it to the bank and have a tracking number with the package.

Well, they certainly seem few in number compared to the later Post-Win95 versions anyway. ;)

I was just blown away to find a copy in as good a condition as this is, in an Op-Shop, for a $1, and with only a single extremely minor scratch on the Discs surface. :)

I still have my original copy too, was the 1st game we bought when we got our Pentium 100! :p, but its Disc & Case have seen better days and the Big Box packaging is LONG gone... :o

That now resides in an older UK diskette-based version I bought a couple of years ago, which came with the Box (In superb condition), the manual AND strategy guide! :D

This one will serve as a back-up, for now.

My hope is that this is the PC version of that later, greater coloured version - Coz the actual original is a pain to get to run without Dos-Box! :p

was the 1st game we bought when we got our Pentium 100! :p, but its Disc & Case have seen better days and the Big Box packaging is LONG gone... :o

My PC at the time was my first also, a hulking 386! It couldnt run Doom in full screen mode, so i had to minimise it so the playing screen was tiny. Also i had no sound at all... it was not a good time for PC gaming for me and i couldnt see why anyone would want one over a console, little did i know haha

My big box for Doom is gone too but i still have my Full Throttle box, but the cd is gone lol. Ill post a pic of that bad boy too, that game seems like its a bit of a cult classic now, it was awesome though so its not surprising.

Ditto! :D

We went through the EXACT same set of circumstances dude, except we never even considered shrinking the screen (It was too small on a 13" CRT! :p) and we did have Midi-support miraculously so we had music but no sound!

We also only had the Shareware version of the 1st Episode: "Knee Deep In The Dead" - Man I cannot tell you how utterly psyched my Brothers & I were when we arrived at the final level (Phobos Anomaly); Survived those corridors of Pinkies & Barrels, only to get outside onto that giant platform in the shape of a Pentagram with a pair of pillars, whose doors slid down to reveal a pair of Barons of Hell!

This was all at a staggering 10-15FPS I might add! :p

So I imagine when you finally got a 16-Bit Soundblaster Card (Or akin ;)) and were able to play a Doom game with sound as well as music along with a proper framerate & screen size, like us, it would've felt like a fairly monumental moment too! :D

Yeah I bought a British version of Doom 1 which included the "Ultimate Doom" bonus episode: "Thy Flesh Consumed", I was more after the exclusive boxart though :
(It was based on an English Exclusive promotional poster of which you can also see a reproduction print of at the top of the pic :))

Full Throttle is a game that I've never actually played but I remember seeing a whole lot back in the day and I do believe it's considered one of the all time best and classics of the LucasArts Adventure games - So hang onto that box dude, hell, with Dosbox you should consider giving it another burl! ;):)

That's it. Hursty, looking at that shelf has convinced me to bust out Jedi Outcast and put ol' Kyle Katarn through his paces :D

I love that game. I might even back it up with Jedi Academy :)

Me three. I played Doom and Doom 2 with no soundcard, but at least I had fullscreen. The game was still great to play regardless of sound. Wasn't until I got the PSOne release of Doom that I played the game with sound.

(My PSOne Doom is one of my small collection of PSone games I hung on to)

I played Wolfensten 3D with no soundcard, just PC speaker beeps. However by Doom I already had a Soundblaster 2.0 and Wolfensten became a whole new experience with the shouting Nazis.

I remember playing Wolfenstein on my friends PC all those days ago. His ran smoothly as far as I remember and I was blown away by the style of gameplay and that gatting gun! Hmmm.

Didn't really play any FPS until I got Duke Nukem 3d for my Saturn, such a great conversion. Doom on the Saturn was not so great, although I would like to get a copy for it's infamy! Quake came out much nicer though!

Speaking of the Sega Saturn, those who watch the twitters know this, but I picked up a Saturn here! Yay! Also managed to bag a couple of games that I was after, as well as my staple faves (since I have left my collection in Australia).
Bought Rockman X4, which I enjoy, but damn Rockman is hard!
Original release Dayton, Marvel Super Heroes, Bokan to Ippatsu! Doronboo Kanpekiban (a Shootemup using the bad guys from Yatterman), Bomberman and some a couple of others as they were super cheap!

Think I need a better controller though as there seems to be a very tiny delay and the one that came with the Saturn feels a little spongey. Which is OK, but annoying as I am bit of a train ride from the closest place to find retro parts.

I recently picked up & have been playing Rage & Metro 2033 on xBox360. While i enjoyed the artistic side of Rage, i found it to be extremely repetitive in it's gameplay -go here, kill these guys, get this, come back. lather, rinse and repeat.
Metro 2033 on the other hand... phwoooar! i am really, really enjoying this game. I think it may even knock Fallout 3 off the top spot as my favourite apocalyptic game. Better finish this one and grab a copy of Metro Last Light :D

Nice score! I need a PAL Saturn for my collection (a Dreamcast too, and pretty much every Sega console ever lol) I didnt have one mate that had Sega stuff so i dont remember ever playing anything other than a Master System and Megadrive and only just a little bit.

Nintendo stuff seems to attract rediculous prices on ebay even though every man/woman/dog has it lying around.

Hehe, they were indeed brilliant games - Spent many hours modding them with different Saber hilts and Plugin-Player Models, the singleplayer was superb for both as was the multiplayer back in the day! :D

It pleases me greatly to hear you kept your PSX copy of Doom dude, always dug the cover art to that one too!

Oh god! :D:D:D

Dude, I totally went through the same here with Wolf3D! - Oh the glory of PC Speaker! :p

We must've spent hours getting the IRQ & DMA settings right so that our "AdLib or Soundblaster Compatible" soundcard would work with Wolfenstein, we managed to get sound AND music working on that but could never get the same out of Doom until we got a 16bit Soundblaster.

Along with Doom & Quake, Wolfenstein 3D is easily amongst my all-time favourite PC games. ;)

I hear you on the Chaingun dude! :D

Duke Nukem 3D, man, now that is a game I sank a s***-tone of hours into too! :p - I was already a long-time fan of the original 2 side-scrolling platformers though so when the 3rd game arrived AND in 3D? - SOLD!

I'd like to throw out honourable mentions to Hexen, Heretic and Carmageddon too while we're at it! :)
(I know Liege hears me on Hexen ;))
