I picked up a PS One at the Craigie Collector Zone today, plus a new Tekken 3 to replace the one my nephew used as a floor sander...
Me and the kids have had a great afternoon discovering/rediscovering my PS 1 games - Pong; Jurassic Park: Warpath; Amazing Spiderman 2: Enter Electro; Gran Turismo 2; Air Combat (we ended up calling it Air Crash Investigation the game); TOCA Touring Cars...
But the best bit was the hissy fit my wife threw. "You bought a playstation? How much was it?"
"$20"
oddly enough she was quiet after that....;)

lol, My wife was upset at me ordering some Saturn games which came up to about $15.
I reassured that my new Saturn and newly acquired games stop me from buying a ps3/4.
Just managed to bag Cotton 2 a very shmexy shootemup, Warriors of Fate (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warriors_of_Fate), a beatemup I played a lot and didn't know it had been converted, but it's remarkably hard even on easy. Finally, a surprisingly cool gem, Elevator Action Returns (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elevator_Action_Returns),

I've just learnt about a third "North American" Assassin's Creed game coming out later this year for the PS3: Assassin's Creed Rogue (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assassin%27s_Creed_Rogue). And since I don't have a PS4 and won't be able to play the new Paris game for a while, I'd be tempted to get this.
But I have a question and was wondering if people could help me. I've played Assassin's Creed 1, 2 (and both it's sequels) and 3 and enjoyed them all very much, but I really disliked the boat levels in #3. Most vehicle levels in the game are a bit of a chore, but the ones at sea in #3 just didn't interest me at all and skipped any "at sea" part I could.
For that reason I've so far skipped playing #4 Black Flag because from what I gather in that game the levels at sea make up a lot/most of the game play. Is that true? I suspect this new Black Flag sequel might follow the same pattern if it's so.
And I don't want to sail a pirate ship, I just want to run on rooftops, climb buildings and stab people!

Very nice Hursty.
Check out that juicy red ps3 back there too...:)
Hehe, poor thing hardly gets used for gaming these days though! :p
Picked up these over the past week:
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Bwk73idCEAERhJD.jpg:large
Crazy Taxi I don't much care for but it was a part of the same auction that included Earthworm Jim! ;):)
I actually own both EWJ: 1 & 2 via GoG.com (http://www.gog.com/game/earthworm_jim_1_2) but I want a physical copy of both games so as to rip the CD Audio Music from them. :D
These 2 games however (Well, 1 & a Mission Pack ;)) I never actually got an opportunity to own as a kid but had indeed played via various means.
So id Software's Quake II Mission Pack: The Reckoning and Monolith Entertainment's Blood are really more of a case of completing unfinished business. ;)

If you disliked the "at sea" parts of ACIII then you'll most likely dislike most of ACIV. The sailing and sea battles are vastly improved from III but it is a very large portion of the game. There is still plenty of building and ruin climbing, and the overall design of these parts is fantastic, but the sailing is how you get from island to Island, and requires you to do so in order to open up "fast sail" options and to unlock most areas of The Caribbean. It's too bad there are not many places that hire games out, as this sounds like a certain " try before you buy" situation for you.
Personally I loved the game, could not get enough of the sailing and hunting down Spanish and English ships to raid for cargo, climbing the mast and then assassinating captains from above.

Haven't played too much in the past few weeks, but picked up the recently released Velocity2x for Vita yesterday (also on PS4).
It's damn good, everyone with the means should give it a go (it's free if you have PS+)... especially if you like high score style twitch action games.
Has a very old school feel to it but looks fantastic and getting in the 'zone' is a great feeling.
Here's a nice speedrun video by the devs (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I928GG3hHQI&list=UU9tW5zVgnSHUryH3JMZFgOw) that shows what i mean! (and also sample of the excellent soundtrack)

Been giving my Saturn a good run lately. Still haven't gotten much better at Rockman X4, but am learning that the key seems to be NOT shooting things and just speed running through the levels. I still do hate enemies that regenerate as soonas the edges of the screen covers their spot, especially this one in the snow level as I kept messing up my jump.
Grrr
Elevator Action Returns is a new addition and it's great! A good challenge and fun as well.
@Hursty,
Man I had Crazy Taxi on the DC and I thrashed that game so much, with the original music it was great fun! I ended up breaking a controller as I would stunt drive a lot. The analogue trigger button got a bit mangled from excessive acceleration.

I had to finish wave 10 of Gold by myself in two Mass Effect 3 multiplayer games last night after my teammates all got wiped... and was the lone survivor in Wave 11 in one of those two games.
I was only an itty-bitty infiltrator - let me tell you I ran out of missile launchers pretty darn quick.

You certainly seem to have got your monies worth out of both Dead Space & Mass Effect series! I'm kinda jealous you can enjoy them for so long; i end up getting sidetracked with new games instead of thoroughly enjoying what i've got.

I think once you know how the blocks work your imagination runs wild afk. I haven't loaded it in a long time but i still want to build the massive lava wall/door from The Incredibles.
I bought Destiny for $75 during the ebay 15% off sale. It hasn't arrived yet but it should be the game + in game perks from the Ghost edition (both expansions + skins) in the steelbook case. The seller seemed to be happy with the swag and a standard case.

Was playing some Marvel Super Heroes on my saturn and had my 4mb Ram cart plugged in. Woo extra Gwaphics I thought. Thing was it kept crashing all he time.
Damn thought I to myself. The cart must be broken somehow. But then Cotton2 Works great with it. Dirty?
So I gave the cart and the CD a clean and it came up noice. Not much dirt on either. Yet it still kep crashing. MSH has the interesting option to turn the cart usage off in the menu, so I did that and the game works fine, but I did want the faster loading and extra frames of animation the capcom 4mb cart usually provides.
So off to google to see if anyone wlese had the same problem. Turnsout that MSH has problems with Capsoms 4MB cart, but works OK with SNKs 1MB cart.
I guess the technology for Carts at the time of MSH was new and they just kind of half added it in. I wondered why the option was "Use 3MB cart."

Downloaded a Crazy TAxi game to my android as I love Crazy Taxi.
It's pretty much an endless runner (that ends) but is kinda fun and aside from making the taxi drivers a bit weak (ie modernised) it's not that bad a game. It still feels like crazy taxi.
It's free with in app purchases. One wierd thing though that I find annoying is you can only play it about 5 times in a row before your 'fuel' runs out. Then you have to wait for a recharge or use diamonds to refill, or pay.
I hope noone actually pays just to play the game again. It's odd that they want you to play the game, but limit you to how much you can play it. I guess they want your money, but the annoying thing is, it then pesters you with notification that it's ready to be played again. No wonder I still haven't found a mobile phone game I'd want to pay for or recommend to friends.
No. How about you let me play you when I want to play you?

Morder is the pick of the bunch (since we've played Last of us before). Im trying to convince him to get Tomb Raider as well, it was one of my favs from last gen that looks gorgeous on the new gen. Also inFamous Second Son, since the first two were awesome.

Doesn't play PS1 games, unfortunately not backwards compatible at all. Next best thing is the PS Now which streams the games. Good news is that PS4 games are region free though.
In terms of games, how about Final Fantasy Type-0 coming out in March 2015?
Then Final Fantasy XV, Kingdom Hearts 3, Tearaway Unfolded and Persona 5 (although coming out for PS3 too). Those are the only games that interests me so far and apart from Tearaway, they seem quite hyped up.

I was wondering about that. So keep the PS2 for those games, the PS3 for PSX and PS3 games. And get the PS4. Um okay.
I plan to get one eventually (the new French Assassins Creed and Uncharted 4 are my main desires games) but in no rush. Plenty on PS3 and Wii still to play. (Can never find the time)

PS Now will eventually stream games from every PS home console but I wouldn't hold out hope of it being decent here in Australia for a long time (thanks to our connections), and yeah it costs - not sure how much but last i heard it wasn't looking very attractive. Proper buys from PSN still works on machines that support it though, you could probably pick up a PS/Vita TV over in Japan on clearance for about 50 bucks right now that'd play em, and then you could finally play PSO2 with me as well :D

I loved TIE Fighter and it made me a Star Wars fan, but could never get it to play on my newer computers. So I will be getting this. They even give you the original versions and the enhanced editions with all the expansion packs and the strategy guides. Great deal for some really good games.
I never liked X-Wing much, playing it second I found it a bit slower/tougher but it kind of felt right as you were a rebel using stolen/not-well maintained equipment etc, compared to the Imperial Navy Forces.
At only $10USD these are good games to try if you never played them in the 90s. Looking forward to blasting up some rebel scum. Match speed with target, divert power to lasers, fire! :)

Oh they will be bought :D now I'm off to ebay to find a joystick :)

Was never a massive fan of KOF. Overall I was a SF and MK kid growing up, leaning more towards SF overall (Hyper Super Street Fighter II Turbo Championship Edition -they REALLY didnt wanna do SF3 for a while :p). When I got a bit older I went into Dead or Alive, though I ended up playing the Volleyball games more than the fighting ones ;) Used to quite like the Marvel vs Capcom ones too.
These days I only have 2 fighting games for my PS3 - Super Street Fighter 4 which bored me very quickly, and Soul Calibur 4 which I would enjoy more I guess if I could ever bring myself to pick anyone besides Ivy to play :p:o;)

I never played much in the Arcade, but when I did it was always X-Men vs Street Fighter. Love that game.
But at home on the consoles, I was all about Street Fighter II Turbo. I could never get the hang of "press button to block" in Mortal Kombat or the complicated move inputs.
But I haven't found a home fighting game that's beat the PSOne version of Street Fighter Alpha 3, that game is wonderful.

That news was leaked prematurely apparently. I cannot wait to get them.
Another thing to note, they are releasing around 30 other old school Lucasarts games as well. I hope Outlaws is one of them coz that happens to be one of my all time favourites.

I liked to team up Iceman and Wolverine - projectiles and melee.

What's most interesting, is that it comes a few days after I tweeted to nintendo lamenting the the lack of MM on 3ds and that they should make one. I did sign it off with a friendly onegai shimasu (Thanks) in Japanese at the end.

I still have a pristine N64 copy if i get the urge to play it again. Learnt my lesson once with 3DS Ocarina - played 3 dungeons and then couldn't be bothered with old game no matter how good.

Believe me, I have played it just as much if not more. I still love it. However I played it on Master Quest on 3Ds not standard so that could have made it a fresher experience for me.
I do understand when it comes to time - Took me like 3 months to finish Skyward Sword just because I only got to play it on weekends and even that time was at a premium. It is the sort of games that you can't just play an hour or so per day but dedicate hours to progress anywhere - Similar to Skyrim.
I love Skyrim but it became too much of a sink hole so I had to quit.

Wasn't Master Quest on the 3DS version only available after you finished the regular one? If it was unlocked right away, i'm sure would have done that too. Though i played some of Master Quest before on Gamecube anyway!
Skyward Sword is on what i like to call my "retirement pile".
Games i'll get to when i actually have some time!

Bought Ocarina 3DS second hand and someone had already finished it - Even if you delete the existing games, it still allows you to choose if you want to start regular game or Master Quest :)
That was the first time I ever played Master Quest so it was a fresh experience to me. I had finished Ocarina on N64 god knows many times and at least a couple of times on Project64.

Quite enjoying MQ now though, its surprisingly different but I am not finding the bosses all that challenging so far.

Yeah the bosses only hit harder but are otherwise the same. However mirroring the whole world and having regular enemies inflict greater damage along with re-designed dungeons do add to a fresher experience. The mirroring alone made it seem kind of new as everything looked different.

Yeah, that's for sure. I ALWAYS head the wrong way after starting the game from Link's house now.

Sitting on my video game shelf unplayed are a couple of RPGs
Final Fantasy XIII
Final Fantasy XIII-2
Zelda Skyward Sword
Worth starting or should I trade/sell them?
They've been on my shelf for a long time and I don't find myself with that much gaming time lately so I'm not sure I want to start a long game like an RPG.
Haven't heard the greatest reviews of XIII (but I loved XII and put many many hours into that). And Zelda, I'm not sure I can be bothered with the Wii motion controls to be honest. I'm also not familiar with 3D Zelda as I've only played the 2D SNES and DS titles.

Looking to start playing more multiplayer games getting a little bored of either playing AI opponents or crazy Asian kids that zerg rush you with Russians in clown cars right at the start.
followed by a very sportsmanlike typical 14 year old elitist jerk response from them, "you even knoe how play noob?!!! elelele"
let me know if you guys play, quite an active player on both.

Same here, tried to get the adapter version from Target and they said they "sold out in 10 minutes" and that they "only had 3 copies in" which was a shame but I still bought the game, will just have to buy the adapter separate.

Wow, I went rhough a slight Ecco thing a few weeks ago. I was watching a play through of Ecco on DC. I still have nightmares of this time I spent a good 2-3 hours climbing up a wall of wells. I made it to the top, paused the game, went to make a cup of tea and knocked the power plug just a touch, but enough to disconnect the power to my megadrive. Super sad.
It was a UK MD, so I had an adapter to get it running. Sigh. So sad

Anyone have a US or AU (preferred) power pack for a Gamecube?
Happened to buy a Japanese GC with a Gameboy Player and disc. However since Japanese PSUs are not compatible with our voltage, I bought a 3P one. Unfortunately it seems the 3P Power pack causes some interference on the display (wavy lines).
It works great otherwise.
I am not 100% sure if it is the 3P power pack so if someone could also be kind enough to loan me a US/AU GC Power Pack to test, that would be appreciated. Also open to buying or borrowing a step down converter.

It'll probably work out cheaper to find a used AU cube than tracking down a power supply. But if you do end up needing one, it might be worth calling Nintendo Australia and see if they have any still. I read the other day some guy called them up (to buy a Wii U Gamecube Adapter) and ended up buying a stack of Gameboy Micro Faceplates they still had lying around as well!

Called Nintendo AU today - They don't have any.
Will see if I can source from someplace assuming the interference does come from the 3P powersupply. I will see about pulling it apart tonight to see if maybe some shielding or something has come loose and that's the cause.

Any recommendations on best cloud hosting site for images/ documents?
Does the site have an option to add tags to images? Ie name, year that sort of thing.

Apart from having to have a Yahoo account, Flickr is pretty good for photos. Albums, tags, galleries and bulk tools for doing that sort of thing. 1 TB of free space.
Doesn't really help with documents though.
Google's Picassa is good too if you're doing all that on your computer, good (free) application to do all that and then sync/upload to web based storage... but I've never that last step

Got a few games recently, not much time to play them though! The other week Phantasy Star Nova arrived for Vita... have already sunk 15 hours or so into the demo version of that and will continue my save soon.
Then today, I bought the just released Resogun port for Vita too, along with After Burner Climax for PS3... Sega's licenses for the planes expired so it was getting delisted, i managed to get it just in time (should have bought it years ago). Licenses suck! They've delisted Sega Rally, Outrun, and now this... Daytona will surely be next, thankfully i've already got that :)
After Burner Climax is a blast! I'm really pumped to get 3D After Burner 2 for 3DS when it comes out early next year sometime, after being out in Japan for about a year already... now that i can play with 3d on thanks to New 3DS' much improved display, it's gonna be awesome!

Omg. I can't belive theyve delisted Outrun!! That is like the classic Sega game. Thats a sad state of affairs and definitely a bad thibg about all these dl only games.
Apparently marvel characters were lost so marvel vs capcom and alk those games were taken off too. Including Deadpool after a year or so (although no great loss there), but I'm concerned about losing good games in the future that are dl only games. I discovered before i left Japan that Final Fight from the psn required and active Internet connection to play the game. Even if you were just going to play it by yourself. That type of crap really annoys me, especially since I had paid for it. So it made me wonder WHAT exactly I had paid for.

Been having fun restoring an old Sega Master System 2 over the past week and a bit, sadly I neglected to take photos of the external of the console BEFORE I cleaned it up - Here's what awaited me internally though!
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/B5HXiZmCAAAXzR8.jpg:large
Bloody thing was encrusted with dust, dirt and cockroach excrement including the odd egg or two...
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/B5HYP8YCAAABj6S.jpg:large

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/B5HYRp6CEAAoU36.jpg:large
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/B5HYSm1CcAA2vij.jpg:large
After scrubbing everything, except the PCB, with ALDI baby wipes ;) and very-VERY gently brushing some cockroach crap away from a spot on the PCB, as well as a pair of little doo-dads, the console came out looking pretty damn good I reckon for 4 & a bit hours effort. :)
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/B5HZzPrCIAA-vh3.jpg:large
Here's a closer look at all the parts comprising the 26 year old system:
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/B5Haie2CMAEB3Aa.jpg:large
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/B5HajIVCAAA308O.jpg:large
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/B5HakCsCcAAzoAG.jpg:large
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/B5HalACCEAEAOrf.jpg:large
I've since purchased a straight through RCA to RFU cable to negate the original RF Switch Box, tuning the console into the TV via an Analogue Aerial signal was certainly a trip down memory lane but alas, although I've got perfect visuals - I've not got any Audio and I've tested it on 2 separate televisions. :(
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/B5HbaMUCMAE0j37.jpg:large
I've got a pair of original Master System controllers on their way (As the console only came with a dinky 3rd Party Atari 2600 Joystick ) along with a copy of Streets of Rage for Master System!
I think I'll have to track down a business or an electrician with experience to see if I can get the System repaired so that it outputs Audio once more, might be a little hard given its age but you never know eh? :o
Also, as an early Xmas present to myself, I picked up an Original PSX for $50! :D
I had to pickup an Official PS1 Dualshock controller from a local "Cash Converters"-type business, along with a pair of memory cards, as the console came with none of these and I also gave it a good goings over with the good 'ole ALDI baby wipes once again. ;):)
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/B4s3YQXCMAAKsID.jpg:large
The beast is International & Backup Game ready (;)) and works like an absolute dream!:D
I tested it and its laser out 1st by playing the full duration of an hour length audio CD, absolutely no hiccups.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/B4s3Y-bCAAAwE59.jpg:large
Next up was a test with an Official game disc, of which the only game included at all was an original Demo Disc! - One that just happened to be the exact same as was included with my original PSX my Brothers and I received for Xmas roughly 16 years ago!:p
It was the Demo Disc that had the ocean/water-themed menu system, bouncing out between a Starfish and Seahorse etc - The playable games were Kula World, Gran Turismo and Tekken 3! :)
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/B4tJ0u_CMAEIlhg.jpg:large
With that working for a solid hour and a bit, the menu spazzing out as a result of a view scratches on the disc which caused model deformations and hangs :p, it was time to test a Backup game...
I tested a number, but the one I got stuck playing was actually one of the 2 original games my Father bought for us with our original system - Spyro The Dragon. :D:D:D
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/B4zxtPMCMAEQ2GK.jpg:large
So after a few hours play over the course of a week and a bit, I've been REALLY enjoying getting back into and completing Spyro - I was quite amazed at how quickly my muscle memory kicked back in after over a decade of not having played the console or game for that matter!
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/B5Wt9ynCQAAotxR.jpg:large
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/B5Wt-nlCUAESjJp.jpg:large
The PS1 had SO many awesome games to its catalogue, I'm quite chuffed that I'll have an opportunity to go back and play a number of them now - Firmly in my sights for the immediate future though is Tombi (http://youtu.be/GZlUfMQV0Cw?t=46s). ;):)

Awesome job Hursti!
That Mastersystem ended up looking as new! I usually don't bother with baby wipes unless it is the motherboard - For the plastic shells, I just wash them like dishes in the bathroom sink with laundry detergent - Since it's all plastic, no chance of damage and the soap soft enough not to erase anything painted on. Comes out nice and clean and since its submerged in water and scrubbed, it gets to all the corners and lines.
For the Antenna cable to RCA thing - I tried modding a Japanese Famicom on that and did not work out too well - No damage to the console but no success to getting it working on a modern TV either.
Also not long ago, I also bought a PS1 fairly cheaply - It is cool as I see it as a successor to the SNES given the history and the fact it uses what is essentially Nintendo technology.

I bought an elgato game capture device a while ago for recording some Saturn footage. As a side bonus it somehow magically fixes the picture of my Saturn on the tv I use. Fixes that pixeklation nicely.
I also tried turning my mega drive to my tv via the rf cable on the lcd and couldn't get a picture... There was no manual tuning, so I was curious as to whether the old rf system just doesn't work at all anymore (theoretically it should shouldn't it?) Or if the cable was just buggered.
Oh well.
How much did that upscaler doodad set you back Kup?

The capture probably fixes the Saturn image due to it's 240p interpretation. Most modern TVs read 240p as a 480i image (that modern TVs already have trouble with) this chain of conversion using crappy composite video cables results in the horrible image.
Get yourself some mega drive composite cables from eBay, that'll do the trick.
The upscaler I bought cost me about $370.

I have some Saturn composite cables that I use and they're the ones that come out super pixelly. IIRC the Saturn and MD use the same video cables. I do play my saturn on an LCD (no room for two TVs where I am). Are they the same ones?

There's nothing I can really delete without losing all my progress on one of my games or someone else's progress on one of their games.
But if I don't delete something to make room then I can't even play my new game
Ahhrrgg
Things were much easier back in the days of the NES...
lol. Yes they were. Can you delete the install data of an older game by any chance? Not the save data, but install data. Some of those things are rather large! If you do, It'll keep the save, and the game will need to re-install later if played again, but it is an option. Hard choices. Lol.

Upgrade your PS3 HDD and no, they were not easier in NES days.
It could take a lot of effort to get a game to run (blowing on it) and on top of that, the battery save games liked to erase games if there was any minor short age while trying to start the game. I lost my Legend of Zelda game while trying to get the cartridge to work and I was on the last dungeon! I had to start all over again.

I'd agree with that also. I never had an issue with a cartridge-based console and I owned several. What you bought is what you got. Developers were kept honest instead of releasing a game that requires numerous updates / patches.

Did memory cards ever have those problems? I liked when you could take your save file with you when you took a game to a friends house.
I hate taking a game like Smash Brothers to a friends place only to have none of the characters unlocked because I don't have my save file.

Agreed
Most were pretty reliable (thinks back to his VMUs), although I heard that some of the PS1 cards had the occasional memory corruption issue. Not too sure if affected the whole card or just a particular save file

Thank you :)
Yeah I was lucky to get mine. The box is beat up but at least it was complete with the map. Wasn't cheap but I have seen it go for a lot higher. Probably one of the more expensive games in the whole range.
Oddly enough, Four Swords goes for a pretty penny too. Specially the Pal version. I had to get the American one.
I am now thinking of modding my Japanese GameCube with a switch so that it can also play US games. I tried Four Swords using Gecko OS on an AU Wii and it was awesome. I really like the dynamic it has when you use a GBA for a controller.
For those people who got rid of their Wiis for Wii Us, you can easily install the Homebrew channel on the vWii if you own Smash Bros. Brawl or a similar game that has the stack exploit. Once Homebrew Channel is installed, you can install Nintendont and play global Wii games as well as Gamecube games although those have to be from ripped ISOs in an SD card or USB HDD as the Wii U is physically unable to read GC discs - You can then use your Wii Game controller Pro or the Gamecube usb hub to play.

As a kid i sold my entire SNES collection to fund a PS1, which i regretted pretty quickly... everything was pristine too! So, when i got a job much later, i decided to re-aquire my favourites and since it's so much easier/cheaper to find complete & good condition games when they're Japanese, i went down that route.
I'm only missing Super Mario World which is still fairly pricy even in Japanese... but the last one i picked up was Link to the Past... on my last trip, for $12 as new :) I plan to frame all the boxed games somehow for a nice display one day, since there's so many other ways to play them these days.
PS Kup, easier to just buy my US Gamecube you know! Let's work something out :D

Yep and I already have a spare - Not official but works either way :)
I would only be using the Japanese GC for Gameboy Player so no need for Japanese cards. The GC only has two types of memory card format - Japan and Western. So US and AU save games are compatible.
To be honest, I can't justify two GCs when I already have a perfectly working Japanese one with proper RCA connectors for the TV. The switch mod is so ridiculously easy and non-permanent that with the space constraints and all, I can't think of a good reason for having two GCs.
In the odd chance I blow up my Jap GC and need a new one, I'll let you know :)

It was nowhere near as easy as I thought it would be as the connectors in question were almost microscopic in size but my mod was successful..sorry :(
Some scary moments as at one point I thought I had damaged the motherboard but thankfully that was not the case at all, I had just missed the connector by a 1/4 of a mm. Placing the switch without changing/damaging anything was also a bit of a bitch but accomplished.

Yeah I have a feeling that will be it - New Nintendo mobile games but more like the ones non-gamers play (candy crush, etc) which are just 'while waiting for something' games with pay per use unlockables.
I am more intrigued about that NX game console they are talking about...

Some random Mass Effect 3 multiplayer moments, both playing as an Asari infiltrator on Firebase Jade:
I spent the first 10 waves of one game getting 10+ revives. In the extraction wave I get downed, so I wait for a teammate to revive me. One does... right under a Banshee, which promptly picks me up and synch-kills me.
In another game, we had the hack objective (wherein you have to stay in one spot for a certain amount of time) against Collectors. At one point a possessed Abomination came running in - these guys explode when killed if you're not careful, so I bolted, aiming to come back in once it'd gone. I hear a KA-BOOOM behind me, turn around and all 3 teammates are down. I ran back in, revived one and then got picked up by a Praetorian. I start to go through the death animation when there's another KA-BOOOOM and I'm alive again.... I'm not sure what happened but I think the guy I revived used a missile launcher to clear out the rabble.
Fun times.

I hear ya. Ive played it across most platforms and while I like having the game on the big screen with the WiiU, everything's still there and awesome on the 3DS. Having a XL helps.
It works very well on the N3DS with the nub, it also gets a nice little graphics boost from the extra processing power. I'd just really like it on the big screen ;_;

Too bad the 3Ds doesn't have a feature to connect it for output on the WiiU. I think Nintendo should wake up a bit and allow device interconnectivity. It isn't the 1990s any more.

If rampant internet speculation is true that's what NX will be. It won't be, but one can wish.
I've been playing Splatoon, I'm surprised I like it so much. Haven't been to into online shooters since Quake III.

I agree in principle, but with the 3DS resolution, i'm glad Nintendo chose to spare my eyes :D

I built this Beast (https://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=wish_lists&wlcId=441208&action=wish_lists) for my 30th Birthday gift to myself... :p

The aim was to build a "Mid-Spec" machine that'd last the next 5 years at least, being able to handle Carmageddon: Reincarnation & Doom(4) :D, but also so I could simply play games at all as my outgoing PC had just been thoroughly used and had met the end of its life (Being built in mid '08). :)
It'll also allow me to get better accustomed with a modern Windows environment, as I've been using XP since, oooooooh... '02? :p
I should also be able to do what I do with PCs a little quicker too, hopefully being able to now rip my Cartoon DVD collection as easily as my CD collection!

Yeah, I am very curious about the NX and although internet speculation does portray the system as the 'saviour' of Nintendo by bringing them to the 21st century, I am also in the doubt that it is that.
Basically as a Youtube commentator said, Nintendo is ran by old men who still think it's the 1980s and 90s. They refuse to budge from their obsolete ideals and practices. Back in the 80s and 90s Nintendo was a huge innovator and seemed to be willing to try out new technologies to stay ahead of the curve and that indeed worked for them with massive success. However by the time the mid to late 90s arrived, they decided to stop innovating and begun sticking to what they know worked for them without letting go. You can see those disastrous practices in the well documented SNES CD debacle and their persistence on sticking to cartridges for the N64 when the rest of the industry had moved on. That Pig headed thinking is actually what ended up given rise to Sony but they still don't seem to have learned.
The most innovating thing they did post 2000 was probably trying to reach out to the casual market with the Wii and the 'lame' motion control games like wiifit and whatnot. That allowed them to sell a shit load of consoles despite the severe HW deficiencies of the Wii which was basically two gamecubes stuck together as well as all their shovel ware they kept putting out to maintain their attention. However as the WiiU has shown, casual gamers don't stick around and quickly move on to other things so with the Wii 'casual gamer priority' practices, they managed to further alienate much of the dedicated gamers who moved on to other consoles and of course, the 3P developers go where they can find the most audience with less hassles.
Unfortunately Nintendo is still sticking to their guns in regards to the 'hassles' for both 3P developers and consumers. They refuse to update their practices when it comes to regions, they refuse to fully accept User based online inter-connectivity (basically your console is the account so if you loose it - bad luck). I can't buy a Virtual Console title on the Wii U and also play it on the 3DS, they refuse to have standard Dolby/DTS surround sound features and don't know how to properly implement MPCM - They don't want to make their console a multimedia machine so it doesn't have a bluray player and although Apps like Netflix exists, it is limited by region as well as much of their online library.
The hassles that 3P developers face are well known with abhorrent licensing fees and demands. There is also the non-standard HW that is not worth developing for since most of the gaming audience has moved on to more standardised 'x86' based consoles which are more developer friendly.
As long as the current mob is there like Iwata, I have no hope of seeing much that will bring Nintendo into the 21st century and into a commanding lead once again in the gaming industry. They need new blood there who appreciates the legacy of the company as well as the progress of the industry.

Happy Birthday Hursti and congrats on the new PC! I have always felt that the PC is the definitive gaming platform. It is cheap to built if you know what you are doing and always remains ahead of the technology curve if properly maintained which is no more than a couple of hundred bucks every 3-5 years. In the long run, it comes out cheaper than keeping up with consoles and always with superior graphics and sound if plugged in properly.
In recent years, I have moved away from 'desktop' gaming and moved my gaming PC to the living room. It is difficult to go back when you are playing your favourite game on a big TV screen and running your sound through a Surround Sound system.

I disagree with pretty much everything you've said :p
Nintendo hardware was never really ahead of any curves. Gameboy for instance (I was an Atari Lynx man!). You could argue SNES but it was a few years after Megadrive and so by that time bound to be stronger hardware. You say they stopped innovating but then go on to say they innovated with the Wii... which, shovelware aside (Nintendo themselves don't make shovelware, they just let other companies release it, like Sony did on PS1 & 2 etc), had profound impact on the industry.
While motion controls themselves are pretty much gone from the other systems, they're alive and kicking on mobile. The 'ease of use' they promoted back then is still in full force industry wide, as most developers agree games have become too complicated and everyone is trying to get back to the simplicity of past generations.
The original Nintendo DS had shitty hardware just like all their handhelds before (and after) but the introduction of secondary screen, and most obviously touch based gameplay - they were the forerunners of this while people were still playing Snake on their Nokias pretty much. Now virtually every mobile game owes something to Nintendo's work on the DS.
They are no doubt the slowest to change, something i think owes more to the fact that they're Japanese than that they're old. Old may be responsible for being overly cautious though.
You have to remember they're primarily a games developer and have lacked sufficient in house OS and networking capability for far too long. Unlike Microsoft who obviously have OS experience. Until recently Sony's network stuff was pretty crap as well for basically the same reasons. Not excusing Nintendo, but they have made strides - a bit late - but at least now their online has at least been stable, and if they're to be believed, should be improving greatly in the coming years with proper accounts and inter-system purchases.
They may be slow and stubborn, but the heads of company are some of the most clued in people in the industry - especially in terms of understanding what makes a good game still, and that hasn't and probably never will change. You should have a read if you haven't already, of some of their financial briefings and Q&A sessions here: http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/en/index.html , where it becomes quite obvious Iwata is the best person to be running the company.
If you read back a few and see the path they've taken to approaching DLC come to fruition for instance... where they are pretty much the only company not trying to completely rip people off ... it's hard not to have some admiration for that in this day and age.
Iwata's stance on the impact of 'race to the bottom' pricing structure (from his GDC speech) will one day soon be looked back upon as completely correct as well, whereas pretty much everyone else in the industry was clueless to it at the time.
While you could argue they don't innovate in hardware in the fashion you're after, they do in others, and it's undeniable that they're the best at innovating in software. Look no further than Splatoon, essentially a completely unique take on the shooter genre. 20 years after Doom, it's not an easy thing to reinvent and yet on basically their first go, they put together a complete, fun and awesome new game.

I hope Nintendo don't over correct the course. I'd hate to see them become like the other two and rely on 3rd party game exclusives*, paid peer-to-peer online and multimedia features I won't use (Surely that's got to be unnecessary by next gen with smart tv's and phones that can screen-stream)
I like that they are stuck in the past for most things, I don't like what consoles have turned into. If it wasn't for the Wii U I'd be PC exclusive this gen.
*this exclusive is on PC and will be on the other system in 6 months when the GOTY ED releases.
Meh, screw it all. I'll go play my Mega Drive instead :)

Sony pisses me off the most cause a lot of their 1st party games are really good but they're so few and far between. I want the sequel to Gravity Rush they've been promising for a few years now... i want Gran Turismo on PS Vita... and the less said about The Last Guardian the better!
Nintendo's output is unmatched. They don't get enough credit for single handedly supporting their systems... Sony or MS couldn't do it if they didn't have the 3rd party support (hence why they place so much importance on it). Nintendo has more and better quality output than any other single developer, and in some cases, multiple developers.

I should of made myself a bit more clear - I was referring mostly to the HW specs of the home consoles not the handhelds. However I do believe that it is ridiculous that they do not offer interconnectivity from 3DS to Wii/WiiU in the sense of Virtual Console games that are available on both and their odd 'Console is the account' policy which baffles me.
I don't want Nintendo to become Sony but it needs to at least become more appealing to third party developers and convince majority of gamers that it is a primary choice for a console rather than something you have on the side for their exclusives if they wish to increase their market share.
When it comes to innovation, I did mention that they did innovate with the motion stuff to appeal to the casual gamer but everything else remained somewhat behind. One of the reasons that the Wii seems to have a lot of shovel ware is that it was so behind the curve technically that not many modern 3P games could really run on it without some compromise but 3Ps still wanted to publish on it due to the high rate of casual gamers. Yeah, motion control was innovate but that's about it and that innovation didn't bring much to the table.
When it comes to the SNES, it was very much in front - Perhaps not as powerful as the NEO GEO but it did provide excellent performance at a good price point. They were also willing to improve the system in any way they could such as by introducing the FX chip which allowed the SNES to handle polygons a lot more efficient than previously as the Megadrive had proven better at it with Another World.
Nintendo is king when it comes to innovative games and gameplay - There is no denying that but they are loosing their market share because people are only buying their consoles for that alone and as a business, that may not be enough.
