I spent $40 on a pretty ordinary PS2 TMNT game sequel just to get Turtles in Time. Battle Nexus or something.

Yeah i have the NTSC version. But since my Wii is hacked, i rarely buy games. I just swap with a guy at work, or rent them, and save them to my hard drive. I finished Kirby this morning. Short, easy game, but i still have to go back and unlock the "hidden" levels and collect all collectibles, etc.

Got Sonic 4 for the Wii. Can't say I am terribly impressed to be honest. The graphics are nice and I like the 2-d gameplay again, but there seems to be more cons than pros to me...

I think my hardcore Sonic-ness is getting in the way of me liking this game. Sonic feels a lot heavier, I haven't managed a good skid outta the guy just yet, and this change in physics messes with the feeling. Feels more mario than sonic. He seems to lose a lot of speed after a jump, so you can jump and almost stop immediately. The homing jump I find irritating in some levels, especially the casino zone. When jumping from the flipping cards, I have a tendency to puch the jump button a fraction too early and he does the homing jump, only toland and run off the card.

I like the Megadrivey music, but none of the tunes are catchy. One of the ones in the Labyrinth zone is just plain annoying.

Eggman is not manacing at all. Why don't the bonus stages tell you how many rings you need until you open the way?

Too expensive as well. Not impressed to be honest.

I don't like to think of it as Sonic 4, it fails to live up to the old games. It's more like New Sonic the Hedgehog (ala New Super Mario Bros) imo.

Kirby Epic Yarn is soooo purty!

Easy to pick up and play, cant imagine it getting too much harder than the first few levels to finish (seeing as you dont die) but collecting 100% could be bothersome.

Finally got Eledees, but alas, no time to play.

Also trialled a Cookie Monster game for the Wii, its fun for the kids (very flash based in looks and play, not worth paying more than a few dollars for)

I tried to get Mew yesterday but my DS would not connect.

I couldn't get my DS to connect to the closest free wifi connection at two locations. It would fine the wireless. It would start setting up but whenever it tested the connection it would go from green to red and no bars and give me an error message.

I'm going to try to find another WiFi hotspot tomorrow. Any spots in Melbourne DS users would recommend?

Yeh, I think of it that way as well. The moest annoying thing is that they haven't really added anough to really sex it up. I thought the Rush series on DS were pretty awesome and if that was like one of them, I would be singing from on high about it. Looking forward to Sonic Colours though. Looki slike it has the awesome Sonic levels from Unleashed without the crappy werehog levels!

I cannot wait, NFS:HP was one of the most entertaining game son the PS1, but then NFS went and got caught in the Fast and Furious craze. Burnout 3 was the best driving game on the PS2, and Burnout Paradise is the game I have spent the most hours playing on the PS3, so with their track record (no pun intended) it should be a corker of a game.

Super Scribblenauts for the DS is fantastic. The original had a couple of control issues (though the word bank was insane), this game has fixed the control issues, enlarged and diversified the word bank, all leading to a very clever game. I only played 3 levels in about 20 minutes, as the title screen alone is worth just playing with (try typing in combos like vampire and garlic, pirate and ninja etc. great fun.)

Mate of mine bought the new Naruto Ninja Storm game.

For a fighting game with only one actual attack button (circle) its decent, and some of the fights are actually better and more detailed in the game than the anime, and definitely easier to follow than the manga (which I find annoying at the best of times). Also cuts all the crap time wasting from the anime.

Might be owrht picking up for $50-$60 in a few weeks/months for Naruto fans.

I vaguely remember that game although I never owned it, I did own a Mega Drive back in the 90's. I still play the occasional game from time to time but now I play the Mega Drive games on my computer using the Gens emulator. Best thing about the emulator, I can save the games half way through and then continue later :D. That was the worst thing about most of those old console games, they had no save mechanism.

It's quite interesting to see how games have evolved over the years. I remember booting up the M.A.S.K game for the C64, it was s simple l-r scrolling platformer, but the catch was your mask had limited ammo and enemies would randomly fall from the sky. You couldn't shoot up either. Its almost like the game was a reasonable concept, but when put into action it just sucked ass. AAah. the days when a game would be programmed by one guy.. (like the TF game on c64). Almost like they made the game long by making it hard instead of putting in a story or decent gameplay.

Interesting fact. Robocop by ocean was a big seller on the c64. Problem was though on the 4th level (in the drug factory) the time limit was so harsh that it was practically impossible to complete the level. The programmer had only managed to do it once! I only did with cheating. Good game, with nice graphics though!

For price comparison though, I remember buying a disk game for the commodore for $40. I forked out $110 for Sonic and Knuckles when it first came out, and Landstalker on the Megadrive cost me $150!! I think because it was first 32meg cartridge game. There's no way I would pay $150 for a normal game now. Maybe if it was a really cool special edition, or a rare Saturn game with historical significance *cough* Final Fight Revenge *cough* $180.....:o

This game is a classic. It's full of rock hard platforming, it's got great graphics, heaps of collectibles to collect = heaps of replay, time trial mode, 2 player mode, image/artwork/video extras. I highly recommend it. Goldeneye 007 was my Wii game of the year but then this baby turned up. Go buy a Wii just for this. And then grab Super Mario Galaxy 2.

I bought the standalone version of Red Dead Redemption Undead Nightmare today. It got off to a good start but then I was attacked and the game glitched putting me on the inside of a building that I wasn't supposed to be able to enter, and I couldn't get out. 20 mins of intro/scene setting that I now need to replay. That's not so much fun but I belive the original game had some issues like this too?

NBA Jam is one of the better 4 player games on the Wii, spent about 4 hours playing it with mates last night, unlocked a lot of content.

Goldeneye is okay as a multiplayer, but the solo campaign is not as fun or good as the original.
All the different control schemes and available tweaks are awesome, but I struggled to pick the game up again for solo play after I completed the first level.

Kirby's Epic Yarn however is great, I'm about 60% through it now, have to finish it before Donkey Kong Country and Epic Mickey are released.

ANd back then most games weren't forgiving with continues, making players have to repeat the entire game again and again for weekends on end until they perfectly made their way to the end of the game - thus making those expensive games worth every dollar.

This (http://www.otca.com.au/boards/showpost.php?p=195717&postcount=703) ;)

The release date has already passed and there has been no official confirmation from WB leading to speculation that it has either been canned or never really existed.

I hold the hope that it will come out - probably next year, however I can't see WB deliberately taking the focus away from MK9 with two MK releases in the same year. It is more likely to be packed with MK9 as a special edition.

Picked up Donkey Kong Country returns yesterday. Very nice! Good old school feel. Although I do hate the way Nintendo games rarely allow you to use a non-shake controller in most of their games. Surely they could program all games to be played with the classic controller as well as wahtever else. It can't be that hard.

I have to say though, DKCR isn't so bad with the motion controls, all you need to shake is for a gorund pound, blowing move and for the attack roll. Problem I have always found with the attack roll is due to the slight delay from shake to roll, I often cop a hit... Why can't I press a button like I am used toooooo?

Otherwise, its another impressive game for the Wii, have to find time for Epic Mickey yet (apparently a good game, plagued by camera controls... boo.)

Worth every cent.

The two lego Indy games are the worst of the lot, plagued by overcheap deaths and poor controls/camera. While Lego HP is not perfect, the cheap deaths have been removed, it is more of a puzzle game that a fighter, I'm not even a very big HP fan, but I pretty much ignored my Uni work in order to finish the game.

If someone can be bothered, I am trying to compile a list of games that I want to purchase as soon as I receive my PS3 via redemption. I'm hoping that someone notices a trend and can suggest some more similar titles?

List:

Silent Hill Homecoming
Resident Evil 5
Fallout 3
Fallout New Vegas
Army of Two
Army of Two the 40th Day
Dead Space
Killzone 2
Grand Theft Auto 4
Red Dead Redemption

Well, it's pretty much confirmed that there will be an exclusive character in the new Mortal Kombat game (to be released March 2011) and it is none other than Kratos himself from the God of War series.

Apparently he won't be a playable character in the story mode.

This was first reported in the Official Playstation magazine and then later confirmed by lead designer David Jaffe.

Personally I think this is a great choice of character and fits the MK universe exceptionally well.

WOOHOO. Hopefully it is better than the last one. I liked it, but I still preferred the first one.

Still a heap of fun, like one of the worlds you end up on is Planet Kleer or something, and it's just full of those skeletons. One of the levels is like Running Man where you have to keep running and killing to get to the next checkpoint before you die. If you stop to kill enemies, you collar you are wearing blows up heh. One of the hardest levels I got to.

Damn straight, the first game was something very special indeed and this looks set to follow suit. :) All we need now is a new System Shock & Syndicate Wars and we'll be in sci-fi heaven!

While I wait for Treyarch to patch CoD: BO so I can actually play the damn thing (biggest action game franchise in the world and it's got performance issues on Core 2 Duo's, go figure) I decided to buy Metro 2033 tonight. As a big horror fan I've been looking forward to getting stuck into this one, and I was happy to see it was only $40 new from good ol 'JB Hi-Fi! :D

It's more of a spiritual successor to System Shock rather than a direct continuation. The Bioshock games have done a great job in terms of improving the combat side of things, however, I believe they've still got a long way to go if they want to match System Shock 2's terrifying atmosphere and complex RPG elements. I dunno about you guys but SS2 scared the absolute bejeezus out of me...Bioshock feels more like Timesplitters. :(

Aaand just downloaded Amnesia: The Dark Descent (from the makers of the brilliant Penumbra series) from Steam at half-price. :D Looks like this is going to be a spooky kind of a weekend!

Also been getting a lot of Mario Kart in. The wife doesn't enjoy video games, except the singing/dancing/make a fool of yourself ones, but she loves Mario Kart. I've never seen such joy on a person's face as they play despite coming last eight out of eight races in a row.

Mario Galaxy 2 is also better because it has more replay value over the original Galaxy in the sense that you don't just replay the game all over again as Luigi instead of Mario once you've finished. I won't spoil it for you but the very last star is pretty rewarding to obtain.

Goldeneye was a massive let down for me, in terms of the one player story mode. It took me forever to get into it, and alot of fiddling with the control setup tog et it feeling somewhat decent, and even then I only got to the third mission and needed a break. It does, but under the main PS3 display settings you have to manually select to have only 1080p rendered in-game.

I read on a Playstation board that because 3-d involves double the processing of the image (left and right eye perspective) I think they have to drop the resolution to not tax the system/cause graphical glitches/slowdown. I suspect we are unlikely to see a 1080 3-d game until PS4/5:rolleyes:

Also although many PS3 games list themselves as being 1080p, their natural resolution is 720, and they can only be forced into 1080 manually. You can leave it like this, but then games that only list as 720p will drop to 520p. I had this issue with ROTF as it says it is 1080 on the box, but auto mode always clicks to 720. I tested SFIV which is 720 only, after forcing the ps3 to run at 1080 and it looked like a ps1 game with blockiness... and 520p-ness

I think I am not the only one who might be excited on this info.

I am really looking forward to the new "prequel" Tomb Raider game. That trilogy of games was fun, Anniversary probably being the best of the three. Legend was good but the timetrials proved the levels were too short/small.

Since I own all three games on PS2, and I bought Underworld for PS3 for like $10, I'm not sure if I'll rush to get this, but if I can get it cheap with a trade-in I'd consider.

I would be really happy if Tomb Raider 2-4 were recreated with the Legend/Underworld engine. I'd be happy with a PS3 collection and remastering of the those three games too. (I never liked TR2 that much but TR3 and TR4 are my two favourite games from the whole series).

It's really awesome right! I couldn't stop playing when I first bought it a few months ago. I'm almost at the last chapter (to destroy Zeus) but have since stopped for awhile after getting the Wii. Planning to go back and finish it one day. Have you played GOW I and II on the PS2 as well? Otherwise the digitally re-mastered version for PS3 is good too.

I finished GOW III last night. The final battle took me a bit longer than it should because my tendency to attack, rather than block and avoid and take my time, was the wrong strategy. I want to pick up the remastered PS3 versions of the first two games when I see it cheap.

Next I should go back to "Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare" but that's not a game you can play for just 30 mins at a time and I don't have much more time than that to play. I might instead go and do some of the trophy hunting in WFC.

I want to pick up the remastered PS3 versions of the first two games when I see it cheap.

Check online stores for it, it is usually cheaper (since ps3 games are region free). I bought it for my brother in law when it was first released from play-asia for about AU$45, $15+ cheaper than Aussie stores, which were very hit and miss if they had (and even worse now its been out for over a year).

I havent played the PSP version of Lego HP Juzmel, I cant imagine it would be too similar to the Wii/PS3 versions (which seem to be the same game)... Hope its as good as the console version!

A while ago I read this. Sony patents PS2 emulation (http://kotaku.com/5304117/sony-patents-method-to-emulate-ps2-on-ps3) and I thought woo, that will be nice, since i have some ripper game I like to play and I can ditch my PS2.

Alas, it never came to be.

But now I see, GOW 1 &2, The Sly Raccon collection, ICo and Shadow of the Colossus (wooot!) and Tomb Riader and I begin to think....

Oh so Sony are doing the emulation THIS way hey?

I wonder if they would do Okami? THAT would be ACE!

Actually Tetsuwan, it did indeed come into being as it was manifested in Backwards Compatibility of PSX and Ps2 games for the first run of Ps3s at which point they were priced at circa $1000.
My Brother bought his Ps3 during such times as he still owned, and still does :D, the 'Illegal' version of GTA San Andreas and it runs beautifully.
Unfortunately, all of the original line of Ps3s were being sold at a loss to Sony Corp :( so, for cost saving reasons, the second run they cut a lot of things out such as:

- 2x USB ports.
- 20Gb of HDD space.
- The Multi-card reader.
- Backwards compatibility

These things, apart from HDD Space, have not been returned to the Ps3s since, to my understanding anyway :o, so if anyone has an original release Ps3 just know you've got something pretty special. ;):)

From what I recall, the original release overseas had a 20GB and a 60GB model - the only difference being the HD size, memory card reader, built in WiFi and two less USB ports between the two.

For the Australian release, they brought in only the 60GB model albeit without the PS2's 'Emotion Engine' chip and utilised a emulator instead to play some (not all) PS2 games.

So yes, the original oversea's release has the PS2's processor chip whereas the Australian release used software emulation (which eventually was phased out anyway).

I've got an Asian region 20GB original PS3 so I feel special :D

Indeed, I believe you're spot on there Vector, I should've clarified that I was speaking in Australian Terms :p, but indeed you should feel special dude, Hardware emulation is almost always better than Software but it sucks you've only got 20Gb - Ever thought about swapping it out? ;):D

it sucks you've only got 20Gb - Ever thought about swapping it out? ;):D

At the time I chose the 20GB over the 60GB since it was value for money ($750 shipped to Aus instead of $950 - if I recall correctly?) and I got it about 4 months before the Australian version was launched (which was $1000 anyway) and a Blu Ray player was $1000+, so it was an easy choice.

I never got around to upgrading the HD seeing as I don't really game that much and it was mainly used it as a Region A Blu Ray player :D

Having said that though, when Metal Gear Solid 4 came out and I was playing that a lot, plenty of the space was eaten up due to much of the game being loaded onto the HD (damn FMV's!)

It now sits around gathering dust as a entertainment unit ornament (seeing as I've added a proper Blu Ray player anyway) so a HD upgrade is unlikely to happen although it is very cheap and easy to do so (sub-$80 for a 500GB installed is the going rate, I think).

EDIT: On the subject of video games (new and old), is there a specific place to create a sales thread for this stuff?

I've got tonnes of older and retro video game gear that I'm thinking of offloading (such as brand new Megadrive console, MIB NEC PC-Engine consoles, brand new Dreamcast, etc)

Yes, I remmebr the rip off prices they were charging for them back then and the crappy emulation we got shafted with. The emulation patent I was referring to came out after the PS3 Slim was made I beleive, or just before, I can't remember exactly.

Just to put a bit of pricing in perspectuve, the PS1 cost $700au on intitial release.

Talking of prices, we're closer to getting an Australian 3DS price - apparently February 8th. Yesterday they announced the US price of $250... probably meaning upwards of $300-$350 over here.

That's pretty high but not unheard of, PSP was about that i think.

Note that Amazon is for whatever reason allowing international shipping of 3DS to select countries, so you could get one for around AU$280 all up - but have to keep in mind they have apparently region locked it down good this time :(

And finally, PSP2 announcement next week! Pretty excited to see what they come up with.

Negatory on the Saturn front. I bought mine a couple of years after release I think and paid around $300 for it. The Batteries are easy enough to change though, but they are the CRC32 size which are the same ones used in the Dreamcast VMUs and so don't last all that long. It's just a shame that when I last loaded up SOnic Jam, ALL my save data had vanished.... Not sure if I can be bothered collecting all those chaos emeralds yet again.:D

That would be nice, but unlikely methinks. It would be nice, as the region coding is usually the only reason I go to the effort of getting consoles chipped/hacked.

They are shooting themselves in their own foot on the region front. It was the main reason I chose PS3 over Xbox and the reason why I set my Wii up for Homebrew.

The ridiculous thing is that 3D Realms had 3 quarters of a complete game when they collapsed which is sad for 2 reasons: 1. They were so close to the finishing line it wasn't funny, and 2. It took them 12 years to get to that point.

By the way apparently Modern Warfare 3 is coming out soon. I think whoever is publishing/creating the MW series is not getting the hint that the series is becoming repetitive now. I really don't know how MW3 is going to be able to top its predecessor.

Downloaded the Crysis 2 demo on X360 the other day. Wow, what a let down. To start things off, the demo doesn't like those with wireless connections so the console would freeze when joining a game. (This is a world wide thing, not just myself.)

After finally connecting to a game a day later by moving my whole router and phone connection, the graphics are nothing special, the controls are sluggish and the weapons are under-powered. Very boring gameplay, too similar to every other console shooter out there. The single player may be interesting, but i certainly won't be buying this.

Very solid games, even if the first game was pretty short (about 7-8 hours long). The gameplay was secondary to a very good story that is told with some very good characters and voice acting. Highly recommended if you dont mind (or even like) third person shooters.

eBay them mate - GT (despite touting themselves as retro gaming specialists) will probably give you less than $50 for the lot (not inc PSP).

There used to be a GT in Sydney (Burwood) and they paid pretty low trade values for the classic stuff.

Yeah, they are really not that different to the other gaming stores - they buy the games very cheaply, and then resell them for quite alot more.
I enquired as to what a N64 Goldeneye and Orcarina of time would trade for, and their quote was about $25 for the two, a little more if it had the boxes etc.

The same store had Goldeneye cartridges selling for between $75 and $125 and Orcarina for $80+

I have a brand new (would be MISB except they didn't seal the boxes on these) Asian region version (plays all carts from around the world) sitting in storage if you want.

I'd be chasing about $120 for it though :o

If your budget's not that high, I have loose MD1 and MD2 consoles (with & without cables/controllers/ac adapters) too.

Let me know if you're interested - just shoot me a PM

I don't have a spare cable but SNES, N64 & GC all use the same video cables, so getting one should be easy, try ebay.

Also I'd recommend using a Composite cable (the yellow/red/white ones) no tuning and a sharper image! I use em on all my vintage consoles, even the Mega Drive (no official Composite cables exist, but ebay has heaps of repo ones for a few bucks each, I highly recommend)

It was the find of the century, in a plain toy store, and must have been sitting there for years; it's a 1995 model and this was in 2005!

And i'm happy to report, it still has the New Nintendo Smell :)

Surely that song is dead and buried! :)

Have they revealed the boss of the game yet? I read rumours it could be spoiler? Galactus which could be cool. Abyss in the MvC2 was a pretty crappy boss. I think I'll be waiting to get MvC3 until I can get it cheaper than $90.

I got the God of War collection for free over the weekend (well via the Coke Unleashed rewards promotion) and started playing the original God of War. It does feel dated and very much a PS2 game despite some updated graphics, but I'm enjoying it so far (although Kratos has far too many problems balancing on the beams of the ships in the first level).

You heard "Gonna take you for a ride" (as a song lyric) a lot in the second game, which is what Gutsman was getting at.

The second game is well worth a download if it's available on the Xbox (It is on the Playstation network) especially as it has a huge roster of playable characters all unlocked at the start. This includes every playable Marvel character from the X-Men fighting game, Marvel Super Heroes, X-Men vs SF, Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter and Marvel vs. Capcom.

Finally found the once missing DVD for Dead Space, reinstalled it and finished the last 4 chapters. If I were to describe the feeling of playing Dead Space, I'd say it's like watching the latest Exorcism movie. It starts off nicely, you're liking where things are going but after a while it becomes obvious the good ideas have run dry. The Exorcism movie seems to realise this as is evidenced by its stupidly abrupt and ambiguous ending. Dead Space on the other hand? It also starts to become stale but does it end? Does it *gasp* get better? Negative. It goes on and on and on and on (ironically, like a bad nightmare). And if you thought the ending to the last Exorcism movie was bad, Dead Space will blow you away. I'm surprised the last boss wasn't a giant herring that continually slaps you in the face, at least then I could tell the developers have a sense of humour. If this and RE5 are the future of action survival horror, god help us all.

So is this the gaming equivalent of sci-fi greats like Event Horizon, Sunshine, Pitch Black or Solaris? In a word, no. If anyone thinks this is the sci-fi equivalent of the utterly brilliant RE4, they're kidding themselves...

Dammit, I decided to give the Dead Space 2 (X360) demo a go today and now I really want to play the full thing. >_< The combat is so much smoother, there's actually variety in the enemies (and even better, how they attack) and the set pieces seem a lot more frequent. Can anyone confirm whether the full game remains as entertaining as the demo? I'm now wondering if part of the reason why I tired of the gameplay in Dead Space 1 was due to having played it on the PC rather than the X360. You can tell straight away that they've improved the flow of combat for the sequel but it just seems so much easier/more intuitive to simply move around, change weapon, activate stasis etc on the Xbox controller. Oh well, back to play the demo again I go...

Somthing needs to pay for the server upkeep and patches, they could do free to play with premium content ala LotR Online or Champions, but those are buggy laggy messes, so I'm not sure which is the better option imo.

Paul, I'll let you know what region Dead Space 2 is. I'm assuming (praying) it's the PAL version rather than the Asian region-free copy and if that's the case, I think MvC3 should be a safe bet. Well, it stands to reason that if it is on PS3 and is PAL then one shouldn't have any problems because PS3s aren't region coded whereas with an Xbox360, they are region coded so one would have to ensure that it is an Australian version - if using an un-modded Australian Xbox360 that is. :o

Indeed, however, is there any difference between PAL regions when it comes to DLC or is it all the same? Further to this, if Paul buys a UK copy of MvC3 on 360 or PS3, will he be able to play Australians or only people from the UK? Questions, questions... :p

As far as I can tell from a bit of 'net research is that there are region locks, but that Europe/Australia seem to be compatible because of PALness, but the US and some Asian regions aren't because they use NTSC, (but the two NTSC regions are comptible with each other)

One site did however mention that the UK version of Uncharted 2 did have downloadable content on the UK store that couldn't be accessed in Aus.

There's a local store in Melbourne that imports from the UK and they seem to be offering the same price as OzGameShop so I might go to them. Saves me the shipping time and I can check what numbers are on the back for the region.
