I have just split from my girlfriend of 3 years. I told her it was over & she walked out. I came home from work yesterday to pack a bag as I am housesitting for a mate til sunday & she has moved all her stuff into the spare room. I went into our room & she had put my display cabinet & home office in our bedroom. All my transformers were neatly placed in a large suitcase on the bed. What a crazy day I had.

sorry to hear you broke up Prowl but at leat it seems ammicable at the moment.

Spent an hour trying to find one TF with no luck. I don't have that big a place and I knew exactly where it was for 5 months, but when I want it? It's disappeared.

And it's stupid but I get overwhelmed and frustrated that my place is not in order, and I don't know where to start.

Everytime I think I'm getting somewhere I pull stuff out to try and sort it out and suddenly there's open boxes everywhere and it's all a mess again.

A few weeks ago it got so bad I almost had a panic attack, which is ridiculous that I let it get to me so much.

Whee! managed to finally find a work around. Had to search, but I have a nifty little video program that will lengthen the video to the same length as the audio! and it works! Wooo, shame I have spent a good 10 or so hours messing around on the emulator trying it that way... After a bit of youtube checking, it seems that everyone has the sync issue.

I think that's a problem that a lot of collectors face. I have a couple very big boxes of figures I haven't opened up yet, every once in a wihle I try to organise them a bit and the study spends a week looking like a war zone. often spilling out into the lounge...
then I sort it, it all gets packed back away and my wife walks in and is amazed at all the sudden floor space in the study... :o

Glad its not only me who does that. My problem is how best to ctegorise them. I hate having half empty boxes, so end up having boxed g1 mixed with other series and rarely have a good set up...

I do that a fair bit, specially with MOTUC figures. I end up with a pile of boxes taking up floor space in my room and gradually organize them off the floor and onto display. I haven't had to do that with Transformers for a long time as I only get one or two figures every couple of months now as there isn't much recently released that grabs my attention .

Very recently, I had this big pile of G.I. Joes in my living room floor that was there for a couple of weeks as I sorted it into the display bit by bit. The floor is now clear.

However once the piece is opened and displayed, I know exactly where it is. I can find any of my TF toys very quickly as there is an order to my display.

If you tell me the name of a toy and line, I will be able to tell you right away where it is without me having to be in the room.

You're all familiar with the 'Try Me' gimmicks for newer toys whereby you stick your finger through the hole in the packaging to press a lever for lights and sounds... let's say you had a red back spider take up residence inside the box... lets' also say you are a MISB collector - what would you do?

In that situation, I would try to force the spider out by spraying a little bit of insecticide through the 'Try Me' hole. If you don't spray too much, it should be enough force the spider out without killing it. However note that if it dies on it's web it will stay clung dead there so be careful.

Just note Spider behavior - first instinct may be to go to a corner and hide. It may then gradually re-assess it's situation (as it realizes it can't avoid the insecticide) and run out of the whole.

It is risky as it could die within the box but that may be preferable to having spider-webs and a live red back within.

Good luck!

I wouldn't go with the insecticide. I'd just put it in the fridge overnight then either blow it out with compressed air or use a vacuum on least amount of power to get it out.

5FDP
14th May 2012, 11:15 AM
Thanks guys. Yeah, not real keen on the insecticide option - it would leave residue. The fridge is an interesting option... hadn't thought of that. If you stuck a vacuum nozzle into the hole, wouldn't the box just crumple into itself  Surely there would need to be a secondary hole.

shouldn't 5fdp seal the hole first before freezing otherwise spider may try to escape?

UltraMarginal
14th May 2012, 12:48 PM
I'd also suggest a plastic bag aroiund the box so it doesn't get too damp, with condensation when you bring it out of the fridge/freezer.

Assuming you get the spider out quickly, then get rid of the bag and make sure the box is in a well ventilated are (even in front of a fan) this will bring it back to room temp quickly and most condensation will be carried away in the breeze.

The box isn't sealed airtight so vacuuming shouldn't crush it, but it will definitely create a negative pressure, I'd probably go with Griffins sticky stick idea though.

good luck

Oh God what a day. Woke up utterly buggered after a restless, nightmare-filled night. Spent the whole weekend making flash cards so am wiped out this week, but decided against taking a sick day 'cos my kids still need English lessons, this school especially. I have the 6th grade and another ALT has the 5th grade.
Got to (Tuesdays-are-often-Hell) elementary school, and my 6th grade sensei suddenly discovered that they don't have the DVD that goes with the textbook for my Elementary school classes, and unlike last year's textbook this one needs the DVD for a lot of the activities. So after I frantically do up a new activity set and search the English Room, it turns out the DVD was with one of the other sensei all along - though why a 5th grade sensei decided to hang on to it is beyond me. Either way, a whole lot of work wasted there.
Of course no-one had bothered to print off the flash cards I'd prepared for our current lesson either.
Had one of my scheduled lessons suddenly cancelled, which I found out about 5 minutes into when it was supposed to be starting.
The next lesson was with the difficult class for this school, the one with the homeroom sensei whose contribution to helping the Assistant Language Teacher is to sit at the back of the classroom and nurse what appears to be a perpetual headache. Seriously, it's like being an assistant to a corpse, while trying to teach 35-odd rowdy and/or apathetic kids in a language you barely speak. Anyway, after leisurely going off and getting the computer he didn't have ready to go, it turns out we didn't have a spare cable to plug it into the monitor anyway, so that was a bust. If it weren't for his absolute lack of giving-a-crap-ness it would have been really difficult; as it was he pretty much lets the kids run riot (and they would if I didn't keep things running moderately smoothly) so everything takes twice as long as it should.
Today's upside is one of my other sensei is awesome and has good kids this year, so we had a really good class there. But still, it's only Tuesday and I'm utterly wiped out, and it'd be really nice to have supposed superiors who could just have the basic stuff I need to make lessons work ready with a week's notice. What they'll do if they get a new, fresh-off-the-plane ALT in a few months when we ALTs change schools is beyond me.

I agree with you 100%, eBay is not what it once was because every Tom, Dick & Harry thinks that they're crap is worth a mint and they're owed a fortune but whom clearly have very little understanding of how to conduct themselves as a Buyer/Seller or how to actually do any proper research.

I have been finding examples like these growing in number over the past couple of years:

I have not had any contact from you since payment and it's now a week after your supposed postage period, what is the status of this item?

"I'm not at my computer 24/7, some people actually work so you'll be contacted when I'm good and ready".

This item is only 3 years old and was sold at all major retailers; Your auction is marked "Make an Offer" but you wont accept $5 off the asking price even though it's set at twice the original RRP, why is that?

"This item is really rare, I've only seen it like twice on eBay in the past 3 years - Trust me, you wont find this item at this price again for a long time!".

I'd be prepared to take this item off of your hands for it's actual value; it's missing 'this that and the other thing' and has a broken 'X', I don't mean to be rude but it's honestly not worth 'X'-ty dollars - Could we work something out?

"Umm, this is a rare toy from the 80s and I know for a fact that it is worth close to twice this amount - Don't waste my time, I'm over time wasters".

Then you get the mongrels who purposely sell fakes/knock-offs and get away with it, they get reported time and time again with little to no action taken by eBay... Yeah, eBay is useful without a doubt but it's often populated with morons and scammers these days. :(

Communication people, it can avoid so much turmoil regardless of which side of the fence (Buyer/Seller) you happen to be on ;) - Oh and your broken, Internationally mass produced item is not bloody RARE! - manufactured in the last 40 years or not!

For sure - many sellers think they have goldmine based on other listings. They fail to realise you actually need buyers! Just because someone is listing an item at $X doesn't mean that whats its going to sell for.

If its something I do want and the seller is asking a stupid price I just message them every time the item gets relisted. The current item i'm after has been on ebay for over 12 months and only in the last couple of listings has the seller started to drop his price! :D

Interesting tactic... what do you do if someone values it a lot higher than you do and they're willing to pay the inflated price? If you've been sitting on it for the last 12 months, I'm assuming that it's a relatively rare item otherwise you probably could buy it for the price you're expecting to get it at from another seller. I hope you don't miss out.

Unfortunately eBay is a necessary evil for those starting out collecting vintage.

I said $6.00 or I'm going round the corner to bunnings - next minute I was at bunnings! Yeah, there's a sheep mentality with people bumping up their prices to match a higher listing, or to that single sale to someone who had the money to burn.
I've tried doing that same trick of messaging a person when their item sits on ebay for a while (some items I have on my watch list have not sold or moved in price for over a year)... but none ever sell. I think the greed and ego get in the way to accept a lower price (which would still be making them money if they bought the item at retail).

Dude, you have to at least let this one slide. I'd say that there are plenty of people that spell (school) "stationery" with an "a". I reckon that's a pretty honest mistake.

Hate to be a pupil branded with "inexcusable" english for that.

Yesterday, this happened

One of the good things of starting work early is easier parking and leaving work early.
Today I parked in my normal spot with yellow lines (no parking in New Zealand) RIGHT in front of my car. Behind me someone pulled in and left a good gap.

Fast foward to leaving work. As I got closer to the car I thought 'hang on, someone is in front of me!'
Sure enough someone had parked in front of me (on the yellow lines) and left a 5cm gap between my front bumper and their back bumber. Behind me a different car was there than the one I saw in the morning was right on my bumper (saying there was 1cm gap would be far too much)

I really should have taken photos .. and called someone.
Don't really know how I got out of there without doing any damage to my bumpers - though it did take me 15 minutes of rocking to get out and onto State Highway 1.

Today this happened
Same car, same location
This time I got the Dunedin City Council involved and at least the person in front got a ticket. Thankfully the car behind wasn't as close as yesterday and with the help of the traffic warden I managed to escape, 45 minutes after I arrived at the car

I've watched half of Season 2 and still NO toys (above Cyberverse) for Ratchet, Breakdown, Knock Out and Airachnid -- GGGGGRRRRRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGHH HHHHHH!! This one reason why I do _NOT_ prefer media-based Transformer lines. Freakin' stoopid... make the toys first, THEN make the cartoon. That way by time we see the toys in the show, we already have them!! (or at least have seen them in stores) But the way these media-based lines work... we see them on screen first, then we have to wait until we see toys for them... and sometimes we NEVER see toys for some characters! :( (e.g. Animated Constructicons, Animated Omega Supreme, Dispensor, ROTF Alice, DOTM Mirage (the current toys don't really count) et al.)

I know in G1 we had a few characters that were made for the medium and not based on toys, but they were usually made because either:
+ The character is some background mook - most don't reappear or are even named. And when toys _are_ made for some of these obscure characters, they're usually limited exclusives because most people don't know who they are -- look at G1 Sunstorm. He appears for like a second in the G1 cartoon!
+ It's some kind of supporting role, like "Hey, we need some Autobot elder dude... cos every hero has a mentor like Obi-Wan Kenobi to Luke..." <insert.Emirate.Xaaron&Alpha.Trion>
+ They needed to make a character that could be easily killed off without Hasbro's permission (e.g. Straxus, Impactor etc.)
+ Political correctness. e.g. Female Autobots.
...but for the most part the Transformers who usually appeared in G1 were based on the toys. And the toys were available well before we saw them in the comics or on TV.

Heck... part of the fun of collecting Transformers during G1 was you'd get this toy, then later on you'd see them in a comic book or cartoon and it gives you a whole new definition of that character that you didn't have before, and possibly alter your play pattern. For example...
+ I would make up my own voices for the toys when I got them, like I'm sure we all have an idea of how certain Transformers sound like to us who've never appeared in a show e.g. I make Longtooth sound like Patrick Stewart. :p But who knows what he's "meant to" sound like since he's never had a show appearance! But for every TF toy I would have different voices I'd give them, but then I'd see them in the show and it would forever change the way I'd voice that character. Warpath has Tourettes?! Seaspray gargles like Mer-man?! Wheelie has a really high pitched voice and always rhymes?! (I initially gave him a 'youthful' voice (kinda like Cheetor) and only had him make occasional rhymes (kinda like Sky-Byte with his haikus) - then I watched TFTM in the cinemas and from then on it was high pitched constant rhyming voice for him!). We don't get that with these media-based lines. :( It's frustrating... Transformers should be about the toys first, screen characters later. Gah. But then you get people who complain about the lack of "screen accuracy" even though usually the toy was first. Well... now you got your "screen accuracy" with these media-based lines. I just hope all the engineering issues, waiting and toy cancellations have been worth it.

Come to think of it, if I had to name one Transformers line that was the best in terms of toys-to-media, it would have to be Car Robot/Robots In Disguise. EVERY character that appeared in that show had a toy. Same with Beast Wars, although Ravage and Transmutate were originally show-only characters (but they've both since had toys made of them). The Unicron Trilogy would come third -- all the recurring main TF cast were based on toys, but it did have a few minor characters for which there were no toys like Signal Lancer.

Hasbro appears to be wanting to move away from being a just toy company and into being an Entertainment media provider. The overwhelming financial success of the Bayformer movies certainly has contributed to this agenda.

Now it seems that toys are no longer the driving force but merely 'merchandize' to the current TV show, game or movie. They no longer seem to get as much attention as they used to. You can see this as there is often a lot more promotion to the media side of things than the actual toy.

Hopefully the mediocre return from Battleship and their clearly panic driven decision to reschedule G.I. Joe 2 will force them to reconsider this approach but Hasbro has never been a quick learner but we shall see.

THe fact that you have no idea about these letters isn't enough of a red light to them that perhaps you are a victim of identity theft via stolen mail thus you could not get the warnings in the first place thus you could not avoid this fine? Geez the least they could have done was get the Police involved or something to start an investigation then just plain out drain $300 from you. What cucking funts.

So here's my tale of trying to get a copy of BlazBlue Continuum Shift Extend for PS Vita.

I decided i wanted it and knowing it was $38 on Ozgameshop, i went to order and it was sold out.

I found someone on Gumtree selling for $35 + shipping, but since he was in Perth i asked for pickup.

At the same time, one on Ebay looked like it was gonna go really cheap, but in the morning when i woke up it was over $30 and so i never bothered bidding, but in the end it went for just $36 all up.

Holding hope for Gumtree guy, who never replied and several weeks later his listing disappeared, i ordered for $44 from Planetaxel on a friends recommendation, since the remaining options on Ebay were $45-50 and most other game shops online were sold out or more expensive.

That was June 2, and the product page said usually ships in 0-3 days. 3 days pass and it says they're looking in their warehouse and if it's there, allow 24hrs. That passes too with no update, so i email support. No human response, but the next day my order status updates to say it's been delayed coming from supplier.

Yesterday i email again since no further updates, only to see this morning another automated email telling me the order is cancelled. Upon further investigation it appears they're bankrupt now and have gone out of business. They refunded but say they fear their accounts will be frozen soon and if customers don't get the refund by the 25th June, will have to chase up their banks. My refund is sitting in Paypal on 'pending' status until the 28th so i'm assuming i ain't getting it until it's back in my bank for real.

So i roped a friend into a Play-Asia order to save some shipping, and scored a $5 off voucher from a forum and ordered it again for $42 all up. 3 weeks wait assuming it doesn't get lost in the mail.

But that's not what my vent's about, my vent is about why i put myself through this shit over just a couple of bucks when i literally just earnt the cost of the game in 10 minutes of easy freelance work! And why do i care so much when i come from the age of paying $150 for Street Fighter 2 Turbo on SNES, as a KID! The gaming industry really has devalued itself recently, i struggle when it comes to spending more than $50 on even the biggest titles nowadays.

And also my vent is about how i bet when i get the damn thing i don't even get around to playing it to the extent i want to as well! VENTAGE!

Edit: aaaand i just saw Blazblue will be on sale on PSN for £21.99 this week. BASTARDS! Oh well i didn't want a download copy anyway *rocks silently back and forth*

Slightly annoyed by people lately refering to themselves as having OCD. A bloke at work today was saying how his OCD wouldn't let him leave any gaps in his PC desktop icons. Another person I speak to regularly mentioned how he had OCD because he kept his DVDs in alphabetical order

That is not Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. I have a family member who really has this MENTAL ILLNESS, not merely a desire to have a nice looking desktop or a tidy in tray. My family member once ran themselves 2 hours late for a job interview because they wanted to make sure the fridge door was closed. So they stood in front of it for 2 hours just pressing on the door every 5 seconds to be sure. This person has hidden their parents car keys because they believed that if that person left the house, it would somehow mean something terrible would happen to another family member. This person washes their hands so often that they bleed from the skin being so dry, they come home from work and obsess for hours or even days about trivial conversations/happenings from that day.

Some of those were before medication, but some of those still happen with medication and a good mental health plan.

So yeah. Bit more to it then alphabetizing you DVD collection.

Ok I'm done; feel better:)

Trent: OCD seems to have become a new synonym for any kind of anal retention -- but you're right, just because someone's really anally retentive doesn't mean they have OCD. I don't have OCD (never been diagnosed with it), but I'm so massively anally retentive that there's a loud "Pop!" sound each time I get off the toilet seat. ;)

But honestly, don't take it to heart. People often throw around medical terminology incorrectly just as a light hearted thing... I mean, if someone screws up and they go, "Aw man, I'm such a retard!", or if they're clumsy and go, "D'oh! That was spastic of me!", they don't mean it literally - it's just an expression. Remember that even the word "idiot" used to be a proper medical term for people with severe intellectual disabilities but it fell out of official usage around the early 20th Century - nowadays when people refer to someone as an "idiot" they don't literally mean someone who's mean diagnosed with a real actual intellectual impairment. It's just an expression.

And terminologies for mental/intellectual conditions change all the time, because usually once people start using the term in a broad general fashion, then the medical profession feels the need to change it so that people don't get it confused. That's what happened with the term "idiot" -- it became too commonly used to refer to people who weren't actually intellectually handicapped, so they changed it to "mental retardation", but now people can be called "retard" or "retarded" even if they're not diagnosed with a mental retardation, so they've changed that to "intellectual disability," and in a few decades that'll probably change to something else. Reading retardation is now called "dyslexia" and so on and so on.

When I was studying special education, at our very first lecture our professor just told all the students that because the terms keep changing and changing (and different countries use different terms too) -- he couldn't be bothered keeping up with the trends, so he told us that he was just going to stick with calling everything some kind of retardation and anyone an intellectual disability "retarded" and "retards" - because these were once proper terms (and still are in some parts of the world). He said that he was apologising now, at the first lecture, if anyone takes offence to it... but that's what he was going to use for the rest of the course. :) So consequently, in my mind, I just think of it all as forms of retardation and retards... and these aren't inherently bad words, "retard" just means to be slow or delayed (i.e. delayed cognitive/intellectual development), it's only because people started throwing the words around as insults that they became politically incorrect. When talking to people I'll try to use PC terms like "intellectual handicap" or "learning disabilities," but if I'm talking with other teachers where there aren't students or parents around, we'll just say "retard", "retardation" etc. We know that we're using the terms in their proper context and aren't aiming to offend anyone with it (it'd be similar to say dog breeders referring to their female dogs as bitches -- it's not offensive when used in the correct context).

But I can understand your frustration... it's like if you show any sign of being organised or structured or consistent then people reckon you're OCD, which totally isn't true. After all, just because someone is wheezing or out of breath doesn't automatically mean they're asthmatic; likewise just because someone is very structured and consistent doesn't mean they're OCD.

Trent: OCD seems to have become a new synonym for any kind of anal retention -- but you're right, just because someone's really anally retentive doesn't mean they have OCD. I don't have OCD (never been diagnosed with it), but I'm so massively anally retentive that there's a loud "Pop!" sound each time I get off the toilet seat. ;)

That made me choke on my water:):):)

And as for the rest you are right, over time as people use the term 'OCD' to describe them being a bit anal, it diminishes the seriousness of the real thing. Which basically leads to discrimination due to people not understanding what the real thing actually is.

I encounter this a lot and it happens with most forms of mental illness. Hence the name changes.

Dude, you have to at least let this one slide. I'd say that there are plenty of people that spell (school) "stationery" with an "a". I reckon that's a pretty honest mistake.

Hate to be a pupil branded with "inexcusable" english for that.

Well I'll be. Had no idea. So the pepper sprayed teenagers and the snooty rich couple were all actors? What the hell man?!

CAESAR is the correct spelling. "Ceasar" is incorrect. Remember that in Classical Latin it's pronounced similarly to "Kaiser" (whereas "Seezer" came later from Vulgar Latin).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caesar_%28title%29
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/caesar?s=t

Interestingly enough, Takara used both Classical and Vulgar pronunciations in 1989/Transformers Victory. The Decepticon Breast Force gestalt Lio Caesar (ライオカイザー (http://tfwiki.net/wiki/Liokaiser)) is pronounced "LYE-OH KAI-SAR" (hence it's often Romanised as Lio Kaiser by Western fans). The Autobot Brainmaster gestalt is called Road Caesar (ロードシーザー (http://tfwiki.net/wiki/Road_Caesar)) and uses the Vulgar Latin pronunciation of "ROAD SEE-ZAR" (and thus English speaking fans still spell it as "Road Caesar" since the English pronunciation of Caesar is based off Vulgar Latin anyway).

Damnit! Flame the crap outta that thing bro - My heat gun was so hot I could see the orange from the nozzle reflecting off the board. Smoke was coming out of the gun too which was pretty badass. :p

Mind you, as my gun was running on max (600C), I only flamed the 4 main areas on the back and front for 15 seconds each (flipped the board after 15 minutes of doing the first side). Waited 30 mins before throwing it all back together. Oh and you prob already know this but make sure you take off the rubber protector thingies on the board underside before embarking on mission: Maximum Flamage. :p

You could take it to an electrician to see if they can fix it. I got my PS1 from Japan, and my ignorant brother went and plugged it straight into an Australian powerpoint and fried the capacitor. :( He then took it to an electrician who had it fixed (and also installed a chip so it could play PAL games ;)). I've heard that the early generation PS3s could play PS2 games -- so if that's true maybe you can try to hunt down one of those.

For the last couple of years I have been collecting the Halo Mega Bloks series heavily due to the fact that they look cool and that they are much more affordable than Lego. Recently though the brand has been throwing out heaps and heaps of new toys within such a short amount of time that it's become more of a burden to collect than it has been a joy. I don't even play with some of the newer sets and have them just sitting there still sealed.

I am thinking of giving up collecting this particular series, and even selling or giving away what I already have. I don't even have that much of a emotional connection to the toys and only started collecting because of a minor superficial attraction. I'd like to hear your opinions on what I should do next, folks.

So I normally get stuff sent from the US via Priority due to the exorbitant postage costs that USPS ask for, for any of the other services they offer...but this time was special. I finally after 15 years of collecting acquired myself a MINT/loose complete Fortress Maximus (Thank you Matt from Transformerland.com) , so wanted to try and avoid having him in the postal system for too long. lol The irony was that in this case I was one of those sniper guys. My snipe was due for the last 3 seconds however the winning bidder must have been a paying sniper (i.e. having assess to final 1-2 seconds of sniping), or just have some really fast hands :p I absolutely need to snipe as I've been tethering internet off my phone whilst in Melbourne, and can't rely on my broadband speed.

That really sucks dude, especially after paying the premium for it. I've gone with USPS a lot, but I usually go for the cheapest - First Class International - and just looked at my recent purchases and they've only done 2 days at the Sorting Facility. I don't usually keep of it because I'm never home to take the intercom, and end up having to wait for the PO to send me a ticket - that part can take days, and a few times, weeks.

So I said, "What about the poster?" -- the guy goes and asks his manager, then comes back with the poster.

So basically... if I hadn't had said anything I would've have gotten the poster. I wonder how many other people have been picking up their pre-orders with only the codes and no poster. :/

Plenty? My sister used to work for EB during uni and they used to have tons of leftover uncollected pre-order stuff, that her manager would let them keep. The coolest thing she brought home was a Lego Batman Robin key chain. If customers fail to mention their bonus, it just gets forgotten, and it seems like most customers are quite hyped over the release and just forget their bonuses.

That is so lame that if you were at school, one of your friends would have punched you (with or without glasses) :p

I always prided myself on my good vision and although for 10 years I have been in front of a computer for hours on a daily basis, it has not faltered.

However there are days where I noticed that it is a little harder to focus on some thing but that is probably because I am feeling tired or something because on other days I can see just fine.

I said apparent IQ, you tend to look smarter:D

I'm not one for the "Hipster" trend, which is why I avoided thick frames with a passion. :p:D

Ah glasses aren't that bad. I live with them, well when you get them try to get non-reflective lenses so that people can actually see your eyes - if that's what you want.

I actually liked my mirror-tinted sunnies as it made checking out the ladies a little less obvious (The hanging tongue may of negated that though) :p; The glasses I ended up getting are prescription transition lenses on Oakley frames ;), $1000 later... :o

After my 27 years I'm finding my vision to be slightly hazy - totally blame work :( Don't need glasses yet as I'm just slightly near-sighted. Not far off, but I'll try to cherish/prolong the inevitable as best I can.

I've been mucking around with computers since the age of 4 which is often sited as attributing to poor vision, the annoying thing though is that little is known/understood (Currently) as to what causes my condition as the diagnosis has only existed since 1988 and seems to affect only 1 in every 1000-2000 people. :(

The condition is called Keratoconus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keratoconus) (Link supplied if anyone happens to be curious), I hope none of you find yourselves being afflicted with it. :o

The best thing about wearing glasses is that you get to make spectacle of yourself. :p

That is so lame that if you were at school, one of your friends would have punched you (with our without glasses) :p

I'd have to agree with Kup there Goki :p, besides; I don't need glasses to make a spectacle out of myself, history has proven this on a great many occasions. ;):D

No apology necessary, i'm not sensitive i just thought it odd that you'd say that! I could understand someone saying they took pride in never breaking a bone or something.

The thing that sort of disappoints me in my situation is that I did/do take pride in caring for my eyes, as it has been drilled into me ever since I could remember by my (Now)former Ambulance Rescue Officer Father that: "Your eyes are precious & you only get 1 set of them, so look after them" - Sort of feels like I'm being punished for no reason but obviously biology doesn't quite work like that. ;):o

That is a very early age to have a computer! I don't think I really got into mucking around with computers and DOS until I was 8. It was fun just typing stuff into a green/black screen and getting a response at that stage :p

The article mentions that its more severe if discovered during adolescence, so that's good news for you, Hursti! It seems like there is a good chance that the condition may degenerate to a level that requires a corneal transplant/graft, but on the bright side the surgery sounds safe and with vision being greatly improved after surgery. So in the uber-long term it looks like it will work out better again :)

Indeed it was :D, it helped though that my Uncle worked/owned his own I.T. firm and wrote off a machine for us once it'd become obsolete - That was our 1st Pentium 186DX, after having previously owned an Amiga (From Grace Bros & told we'd never need anything more than a 40Mb HDD :D) & a Commodore 64 (Prior to my ability to remember things :p).

Actually, it's better to of had it diagnosed as early as possible (Sadly, I was experiencing symptoms from the age of 12 but was none-the-wiser) as it only gets worse with time, oddly it stops at about 35-40y/o but by this time it is quite likely one would need a Cornea Transplant - Which said prospect freaks the hell out of me. :(

Being that I've been able to identify the affliction at age 27, it has made me an ideal candidate (apparently) for Collagen-Crosslinking - It's not a cure (As there isn't one) and the treatment is only 9y/o (So the long-term effects are unknown) but it has a very high success rate in halting the disease in its tracks & in 15% of cases has shown minor improvements to vision. :o

I hope that it doesn't get any worse, but now having to use glasses & being told that I'm medically unfit to ever hold a license or legally operate heavy equipment - I'm depressingly dependant on others (Or Public Transport) in order to get around (Apart from Push-bikes... or Horses), so yes things will hopefully be better in the end (:)) but it still feels like I've had a degree of independence taken away. :(

Yeah, I really do not like the idea of a Cornea Transplant nor having my Corneas possibly tearing away from my eyes if the disease is left unattended.

That's pretty scary, I have glasses, but only because I've spent too much of my life reading.
Hopefully it works out for the best, maybe something turns up in the medical world that reverses or even cures the problem.

Short sightedness isn't solely to do with using computers, reading or watching TV (though these things can contribute) -- it's just to do with living in urban environments where we very rarely (if ever) look into far off long distances like the horizon. For most of us, the end of a road while we're driving is as far as we may look at. Taiwan has one of the highest rates of kids who need corrective eyewear, and it's speculated that it's probably because a lot of kids there live in relatively cramped urban environments - apartment buildings instead of houses - and just always looking at things close up. If wearing eyewear bugs you that much, saving up for corrective medical procedures is one option. A cheaper option is contact lenses -- but I personally can't stand the thought of jabbing at my own eyeballs! Also your eyes get fatigued if you wear contacts for prolonged periods of time.

But I think it's important that if you do need corrective eyewear, use it as prescribed. I got glasses when I was 15/16, and I haven't needed to get any stronger prescriptions since then because I always wear them. You can also get stylish frames -- mknell got himself a pair of Astroboy frames (he was wearing them at the last Parra Fair :)). I'd love to see someone make a pair of Transformers frames. ;)

Speaking of contacts, our old Year 8 Japanese text book starts with a comic strip - introducing basic greetings - set in a Dojo where people are bowing in Seiza like this (http://www.flickr.com/photos/terrydonaghe/1118009/). I'd always tell the kids that Sensei had dropped his contacts and everyone's trying to find them. :D :p

I hope it doesn't turn out as severe as it sounds, I know how hard it can be when the ability to drive is taken away. I wasn't allowed to drive until I was 25.

Why aren't you allowed to have a driving license if your vision is corrected with glasses?

You need PowerDVD11 to play blurays (and a BD Drive) and it seems that you can't play them on VLC because the codecs for Blurays is encrypted and you need a license for it. It is a very restricted format.

Which makes me so tired i have to sleep. As you know, i do alot of black n white line work and i was wondering if all i see on my screen are the outlines of every pixel, but don't notice it sorta thing. I have a big screen monitor already.
I have a similar effect with painting models, but that doesn't start to happen until bout 6 hours later and 2 days later for sims2!
See if i can't learn digi, i can't even get a job in a printing joint. Strange, but true story. And people won't let me do the print, colour, scan back in thing. Even for some of the dudes here in ozformers who've asked me to colour their stuff. If they can't have it now, they don't want to know.

+1. The eye issues you're describing sound like it may be something that can be diagnosed and fixed. Have you got a GP you know and trust? Worthwhile asking for a referral to an ophthalmologist, to get your eyes properly tested and treated. Might be the first step towards solving some of your issues.

What the hell did the first guy find then and what the hell is the point of an ultrasound if it isn't as conclusive as the highly scientific feel test!

Go to a GP and they will do it, or send you to a nurse to pump them out with a pump or syringe. Otherwise chemists sell wax softener that you drop into your ear and lie down as it dissolves.

Actually, you kinda have to ring the dudes that sent the mail and tell them directly. cause when it gets to the office, they just bin it and send another next time.

Be careful with that. As to find out who is sending it you may be tempted to open it. Keep in mind that it is an offence to open mail that is not addressed to you.

I have this problem as well. The previous resident of my house (we have been living here for 5 years now) seems to have run up quite the credit card bill ( or bills) and we are still getting the letters of demand from the debt collection agencies. Writing 'return to sender, no longer at this address' doesn't work, as I believe they think that is just a clever tactic to throw them off the trail. Fortunately mail frequently gets damaged in my mailbox and so it can sometimes be impossible to see who a letter is for until it is opened. On those times I have ran the debt collection agency and informed them of the situation. Sometimes that works but sometimes they still seem to persist and it isn't until I threaten to call the police that they back off.

One day a guy came to the door and just tried to walk in the house, luckily I always keep the screen door locked, but he demanded that I let him in. He was debt collector, but wouldn't say so, he tried to bully me into letting him in so he could "collect his debt". Needless to say I was not impressed. I tried to explain to him that the person he was after moved out 2 years ago but he didn't seem to care. So I wandered away from the door telling him I would just be a second. I came back with my 22 inch pipe wrench and my mobile phone, he backed off a bit then but still would not leave. I then proceeded to call the police and tell them that someone was trying to force their way into the house. He left quick smart then.

Debt collection agencies are scum. Probably my number 2 most hated types of people. Right below developers.

wow, I've never had to deal with debt collection. usually if I get mail turn up I RTS for a couple months, then it goes in the bin after that, I figure if they don't care enough after goodness knows how long (one place my flat mate had been in for 4 years before I joined him and we were getiting mail that he didn't recognise the names on) they probably won't miss the random letter from random place they didn't bother changing their address with.

7th September 2012, 01:29 PM
"Not at this address" is usually the best one, as it is easy to understand and should remove your address from that mailing list/database... as it gives a reason why it is being returned. "Return to Sender" can be a bit too vague, as it could also mean that the person is there, but doesn't want to accept that particular item of mail.

Writing "not at this address" is so affective, if you did that on any letters from the AEC, it used to be a way to get off the electoral roll (because they can't keep a person on the roll if their details can not be verified), but not sure if it works anymore (since it is illegal not to be registered to vote*, and they cross-check your details with other federal databases now).

*I'm not a fan of Compulsory Voting (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compulsory_voting) if it is being abused as a mere revenue-raiser for the major parties (who earn $3-4 per vote, both Senate & Reps, reaping in millions with each election), disguised as a "have your say" concept, as if we have a choice. Voting should be free, so that they earn our support, instead of just earning our money. Then there would be some merit in being Compulsory, as a (free) civic duty.
(I only recently realised that we are just one out of 10 countries, out of about 200 in the whole world, that have enforced compulsory voting. I would have thought there were more than that.)

Hello.
Why does no one want to meet this little Maximal scout and its Autobot Decepticon family, with other distant tf scout friends? Not like I'm scary, and the little protoform is well mannered, and the bigger 'protoform' is a bit easily frustrated sometimes, but doesn't bite neither. Am I missing something, some secret tf code somewhere? I've been going outta my way to get meet going with no easy time or cost at my end and, waiting till the last possible minute to leave and using taxis to get me to places in order to meet people. Not a word or sms, or even a 'sorry i'm busy', even a pm. Like, people say they want to meet new fans and see others collections, but i've not seen this yet. Can't even get a hold of Jhiaxus!
Sad little Maximal is sad. (and pissed)

It's not anything against you. If you lived in a more populated area of members, you'd have better luck, but even then, you might need to wait for a convention or collector fair. Just see the sort of meets and frequencies of them in the meets section, and it isn't about any one person... 9 times out of 10 it is a meet at a pre-existing event.
It may not be easy or affordable, but if you are really wanting to meet up with a group of fans, consider traveling to a Parra Fair or Nexus fair (since your location says you are in "Coolgardie", so Nexus in Perth would be closest to you).
In the past I've flown to a few collectors fairs and conventions just to meet up with other fans, because at the time it was difficult getting more than 2 people to show up to a Brisbane meet.
But now I, like most others our (older) age, am usually too busy with other things to be able to go to meets... so don't be thinking people are avoiding you.
Also consider that you aren't a frequent poster here, so those who may have time free to meet up, may not know you well enough to feel comfortable meeting a stranger. (again, if this is a factor here, it is nothing personal to you - and we can't expect you to interact here more if you don't have the spare time for it... just like we can't expect people to meet up if they don't have the spare time for it either).

So basically, if you are keen to meet up and aren't in an area that has much interest or members, investigate the option of traveling (if you have the time or finances for it).

If you have agreed on a meet & the party/ies do not send a text or anything then that is disgraceful. I am reading this as you arranged to meet at X & no one shows of course & you have gone there.

Unless there's something really major happening, I try to attend all my local fan meets. I've travelled interstate and overseas to attend meets too. :) And anything that would stop me would have to actually clash with the time of the meet... like one time I couldn't attend the beginning of a meet because I had to drop my in-laws off at the airport, but I went from the airport to the meet (turned up late, but I still turned up!). Another time I had a wedding to go to, but the wedding was in the evening! So I totally attended the meet, but kind left early to get ready to go to the wedding (by early I mean I didn't hang around for lunch :p). So yeah, if I'm not at a meet - you know there'd better be a _damn_ good reason.

Its cool if people just said like 'not interested' or 'can't on this day' but i can't even get people to tell me that. I've tried all forms of communications and the thread, if you've noticed. I'm talking to myself. My non tf (very casual kinda tf fans) friends have more responses than the actual tf fans. (the ones claiming to be on this forum a lot.) Like, is there a few satellites down on Cybertron? No signal?
Yeah Goki, your one of the adventurous ones and we are not all like that. I know that. And people are busy , like duh. And no, there are no toy fairs or conventions here in NQ. But i truely think its Townsville as the same problems occured with finding Dystopian Wars/40k players. ( but my BF has a stricter timetable with work n all) I no worky like that but i'm not free anytime either. And these things are just coming of as rude. Its a big deal that i can get out to the cosplay night, being a good $30 in a taxi each way if my other contacts fail, and i have no choice but to lug the kid too. (which will need feeding in those 5 hours- can you see Sunstreaker in a Maccas line...?) So its not smooth at my end. But even then, the only people that have responded to the post are you guys from wayyyyyyyyyy outttttttaaaaaaaa town. That just feels weird. Its nice to have pen-pals.

Oh, and further to your rant post, tell these associates of yours that the latest music is all rubbish. I cannot speak detrimentally enough of the music you kids listen to these days. And I don't say this in the way that my father/grandfather said this to me, in that the style has evolved into something those that came before consider meaningless noise (I put heavy/death metal in that category.)

Music has become a means to an end rather than the end itself. It has become nothing more than a method for the "artist" (and I use that term VERY loosely) to promote and sell their image. And their image usually involves said "artist" in a video clip acting like a 2 bit ho (if a woman), or surrounding themselves with 2 bit hos (if a man), and partaking in activities and behaviours that we generally consider to be detrimental to society.

I just had a look through the ARIA top 50 singles. And really??? The only artist I think deserves to be there is Missy Higgins. WHile I don't really like her music, at least she makes music to express herself and connect with her listeners. Not to get the most bang for buck out of every song and hundreds of potential club remixes.

Since around April/May. I really want to keep it going. I imagine it's going to get tough. Before this was pokemon. I think if I can keep buying toys, watching the shows/movies and playing the games at a consistent rate can help me stay on track, because usually when I see something from my childhood, I get interested. I went off collecting ben 10 figures about a year ago, (after I'd got every alien force figure) but I drifted away from it. These past few weeks the idea to keep going keeps coming up in my head and it's hard ton jam it out.
This is a good and bad time for me, all the good stuff from my childhood is coming back. TMNT, Thundercats, a little power-rangers, ben 10, MOTU etc are all trying to replace the spot currently held by transformers. As I said before, I really want to hold onto this hobby as long as I can,as I don't want to tell myself that I've wasted so much money on something that isn't even that important to me. I really don't want to do that again. It's frustrating. I now feel like I can really only go with transformers and no other toys, since I don't want anything else to take over. It's kind of paranoid, but I think it might work. Hopefully.:o

It pains me, when there are those that are normal and act normal, but they don't become famous because they don't looooove partying like Chris Brown or whatever that man ******* **** ****** ****hole does for a living. They let fame get to them and it's really hard to find meaningful, yet true musical talent out there. It's really annoying to me too. You're not alone.
