I use a Netgear DG834g modem/router and don't get any dropouts. After about 2 years, the power cable fried itself somehow, but other than that it's been much better than the Billion and Alcatel modems i had beforehand.

I have been using the DG834g for about 3 years (maybe 4) and it has been awesome. I even find it better than newer offerings in it's style and interface.

CCPU.com.au (http://ccpu.com.au/show_cat.php?cat_id=hdd) have a Samsung G3 Station 1000GB external for $90. I bought my 1.5 for $115 from them a few weeks ago.

Otherwise MSY or eBay I guess.

My Netgear modem (yes I know it's craptacular) died last week (connection dropouts every 10 minutes). Got it replaced with another one which keeps dropping out of connection too ( but less frequently) on the first day of working. Thought it was a Bigpond error, so called them - they told me to call Netgar because nothing was wrong with their lines - I call netgear for help, they tell me to go to Bigpond.... ...FML about an hour of wasted phone time with no help on either end but my conclusions is that it's just netgear's crappy modem, judging by other 'colourful' experiences posted on the interwebs.

Thank heck I'm buying a 2wire modem from Telstra next week (same brand as my very 1st modem, I can trust it works but downside it dies after about 4 years of use). Just got to hold onto this piece of crap modem until next year where I can exchange it for a gift card to spend on something else useful...

Also a tip for any net users out there, don't buy your web hardware from DSE, I made a huge mistake doing that. I asked the people working there if the modems were good and they didn't know what they were doing apart from easily taking my $$$. That's also another thing to rant on while I'm here, what DSE is becoming - I went to my local one recently and asked for a Funway Electronics starter kit - the girl there had NO IDEA what I was talking about - Dick Smith Electronics eh? More like Dick Smith Cashsuckers...

Can I make a suggestion and have a question.

Do you have a adsl and phone splitter/fillter in your line?
This sounds very similar to a problem I had, It could be the splitter because our splitter crapped its self and as soon as I replaced it the problem stopped...

Down here in the Illawarra, we swear by the monthly Computer Fair (http://www.computerfairs.com.au/) and Computer Market (http://www.computermarkets.com/cm/) that travel all over the state and have truly awesome prices for Computer Hardware and Software.
Forget about what any Major retailer tells you - apart from online stores, no where is cheaper than the Computer Fairs & Markets! :D

Almost a Year ago I bought my 1Tb HDD for $90 and bought an External Chassis for it for $15 from the Computer Fair held at BHP Stadium in Unanderra. ;)

If you don't wanna buy online, I highly suggest attending one of these as they are leaps and bounds cheaper than buying from any major retail store (Yes, even including JB-Hifi ) and are comprised of online retailers anyway. :D

CCPU are fine, you might have to wait a bit if they are really busy. But they are helpful.

MSY are notoriously atrocious. Expect to wait in a long queue for a long time, or order ahead. Their customer service is borderline non-existent.

The markets at North Rocks Westfield used to be really good for PC stuff, not sure if they are still on tho. Used to be on Sundays.

You might have had a bad line filter too. It happens, they do die. I've had no troubles with netgear. I'm using a dg834 right now with an intention of upgrading to a dgn3500. I did have troubles when I first got the modem as it was just when I churned to tpg adsl2, I had to get their settings and change things such as multiplexing, vpi and vci Probably the same as bigpond, those settings might have to be set.

As for dse, wow, people still don't know? They are going electrical / computers. That's why it's not electronics anymore, just Dick Smith, and the "techsperts" thing came in.

Even jaycar isn't as well inventoried as they used to be. The whole state of electronic stores is very bad these days. I have no choice but to order online as I've recently done a couple of projects from vintage-computer, and the components used you just won't find at jaycar. Heck, couldn't even find a basic 12f629 pic there. You can forget about an atmel 28c64.

I usually use futurlec, but last week put an order in with farnell.

msy, don't expect any sort of competency aside from looking at inventory levels on a computer screen from the staff. Same as just looking at the boxes for information. They have no product knowledge at all. Also don't expect inventory. It's always a gamble at msy. In short, you really have to know what you specifically want and be able flexible to change brands and levels of gear on the fly if you need a specific type of component.

Hi guys, my filter is fine. What actually happened was that whoever was on the phone at Netgear Technical Support had me enter the wrong settings. The web works fine now. Thanks for your suggestions.

And yes I did notice that DSE is no longer DSE, just DS. And I have not seen a Jaycar before in Adelaide yet. I'm sure that out there somewhere in the suburbs there are those small businesses that sell proper electronic equipment.

I've had that happen to me as well dude. :(

If the Auction passed through without any bids, I suggest approaching the Seller and offering an external purchase of the item.
This has worked for me a couple of times and the Sellers were really good about the whole thing as they are able to sell their item and not have to pay so many fees. ;):)

Try this website to search for the cheapest place to get hardware it searches multiple computer stores. The more details you know the more easier to find.

http://www.staticice.com.au/

I don't think MSY is the cheapest anymore. And my experience with them is service is non existent. But if you know what you want and are just going by price, then who really cares about service. Not sure whether they sell dodgy 2nd hand stuff though...

Also, by portable I assume you mean not requiring external power supply? I think some of the hd suggested already, require the external casing to having external power supply.

Thanks, guys. :) I just really hate maxtor from DSE. It failed in less than a year and i need to have it shipped to their warehouse in the city in special packaging (extra cost again) and then they'll ship it to singapore for replacement. Where's the one year in house warranty? :( If it failed after a year, then I'll go for the manufacturer's warranty.

What they said was not all items have the 1 year warranty with the store. :(
How was I supposed to know that when I bought it at the store?

Speaking of internet connections, I just believe how easy it is here in HK. I went into a Vodafone store, bought a wireless router for HK$380 (approx AU$50) which includes the plan, went home and in 15mins I had wireless connection which is just a fraction slower than my Optus one back in AU. HK$99 (approx AU$12.90) per month, unlimited bandwidth. Internet in AU used to cost me 5 times as much.:confused::confused:

@MV75/Skywarp,
when I got here, I asked myself "WTF was 1GB/4GB, etc?" Back home, it's the speed that I pay for and not the amount of data.

There are a lot of things you don't know about if you never leave the country. Ripping you off is a constant. Basketball Shoes cost ~$100 more even if the Aussie $ is weak or strong. You can't justify a KBV for $240 when it costs like US$120 plus shipping ($50) from reputable websites.
There was this CP3 white in a factory outlet, (last one) and it was $170. The CP3 blacks were $120. Just because it is a newer model (by color release date not design), I couldn't bring myself to pay the extra $50. The blacks didn't have my size. :(

Like CTP green slips, why is it necessary when you already have comprehensive insurance?

Agree with you there. While I was in AU, there was always a constant feeling that I'm getting ripped off. Everything is just doubly expensive. The odd thing is that the groceries that are produced in AU actually costs more than those that are imported (good example is the IGA in Kingsford selling at such prices in the 2003 to 2006 years I was there).

I remember how shocked I was to discover that 56K dial up costs almost as much as my Singapore unlimited data Cable connection (with Cable TV) when I first arrived in AU in 2003 - 56K dial up with a datacap in AU cost me AU$50 in 2003, which is SGD$60+, almost as much as my unlimited cable connection which includes cable TV for SGD$75. There wasn't even ADSL in the Kingsford area in 2003 while every home is Singapore was already made ADSL/Cable capable. It's pretty shocking really.

It's trickiling out here in Western Sydney as well. Penrith has seen up to wave 2, and seems to be stopping at that. Every time I o toy hunting, I always end up dissapointed. That's why when I was heading through Canberra a couple of weeks ago, I decided to check it out, and found 2 WFC Soundwaves. I walked into Toyworld Kiama a few months ago and was surprised to see they had Wave 1 PCC before everyone else. But then nothing. it seems like every couple of months we get 2 new figures in mass and then they stop.

It feels like that eerie period before ROTF was released when nothing was released for months. I'm really becoming disenchanted as a collector.

It's kind of cute how unnecessarily backwards we are when it comes to communications.

Who does Australia want to match up with? Probably can't match some 3rd world country in terms of cost/service/speed. Hong Kong is almost the size of Hobart!
With a third of the population of Australia, crammed into an area 1/6000th the size!!!

That sort of population density (the fourth most dense country in the world), makes infrastructure cheaper than here, and offers more competition from businesses that are all located in the same area (in Australia we might have more companies/providers, but some may only cover certain regions or cities - reducing competition in the country as a whole). Plus, our cities have to offset/subsidise the regional areas, which is the sticking point for our proposed National Broadband Network - some politicians are chasing votes by wanting regional users pay more for the higher set-up costs out there, while other politicians want everyone to pay the same, despite it costing less to set-up and operate in the cities, for 90% of the population.

In HK, they don't have that same cost variance issue, as their providers can cover the same amount of people with probably 1/2000th less expense (the differences in landmass and population densities of our two countries). As such, I'm not surprised that they have a significantly cheaper access to Internet, and don't see our prices as being excessive.
We do have adequate competition here for the limitations our providers have working against them (large landmass is difficult/expensive to 'hardwire' or provide full and/or affordable coverage).

For the record...
HK - 1,100 km2 - 7million people = 6,480 people per km2.
Hobart - 1,400 km2 - 210,000 people.
Australia - 7.6million km2 - 22.5million people = 3 people per km2.

Australia has six thousand times the land mass, but only 3 times the number of people as HK.
Think of it this way - take the population of Australia's largest and third largest cities (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cities_in_Australia_by_population) (Sydney and Brisbane), and squeeze them into Hobart.
Now take all those services, businesses and infrastructure and cram them into that small area... now what cost savings can you imagine are now possible? You already have 2 large city's worth of duplication, plus less area to cover for just about every business being 'relocated' to a small city like Hobart.
Now imagine ISPs in those two Cities servicing the same number of people in an area the size of Hobart? A lot more competition and cheaper deals would occur, wouldn't they? But in Australia, with a density of just 3 people per square Kilometer... us city foke have to pay for services (not just internet) that can often cover large tracks of unpopulated or sparcely populated land. :(

And the liberals just want to keep the existing network :D Although labor may overestimated the cost for the upgrade :( Either way Australia loses. Who does Australia want to match up with? Probably can't match some 3rd world country in terms of cost/service/speed. I guess there are more old people who aren't tech savvy than the youth in australia. I honestly don't know Aussie stats. But it seems the older gen has more say and they're general consensus is that the network is fast enough

It is fast enough, we just need *more* of it.

Also you forget the companies themselves. ADSL was 8Mb capable day one, yet they limited it to 150Kb/s for many years, then suddenly overnight it was "upgraded" to 8 megabit with the rollout of competitor adsl2 equipment.

Do not forget history.

Plus fiber isn't the big godsend either. Replacing the current copper, we still end up with a digital system that can only still take so many concurrent connections.

jazzcomp
27th October 2010, 10:55 AM
There's a lot of that going on. Just holding technology down to keep making money of the old one.

Fast enough is relative. Before, it was ok to download overnight. Now people want stuff straight away.

I just wonder why on HD they want to be ones of the first, phasing out analog :D

I'm not on ADSL, my wireless sucks. I keep getting disconnected and wasting download data allocation because I need to restart my downloads every effing time. Can't help it though, I'm renting and it's tough to transfer if you're on a contract and the next place you find isn't serviced by your provider. I'm also in a poor connection area. Can't move right now as everywhere else is almost more expensive. :(

I just want to have a cable package with general stuff plus espn and maybe hbo on it. Not add so much on top of the basic. So expensive, I decided not to get cable.

What will you expect from history? More of the same? Lame ass service till a competitor offers a cheaper price :( Then you'll roll out the same. Do you know how old TIVO is?

My cell provider doesn't even provide loyalty offers after you finish your contract. :(

What is next to fiber? A lot already had fiber a long time ago. :(

Not buying toys at the store because i don't want to buy repaints. Then changing my mind about them only to have them unavailable in stores. So i go looking on ebay only to find the minimum selling price is $60 eg deluxe Universe 2.0.

I understand market value but if i had of brought them in store i would be paying far less.

I agree with all this. I know that I was single for what seemed like the longest time and the worst thing you can do is worry about it. There is no magic formula. I had a kind of girlfriend at one stage. We were on and off like a tap. After a year I wanted to commit and she wasn't sure. I just said fine turned around asked her flat mate out on a date and now we are married... So it does happen you just don't know when. I know for that year I was with Christine (not her real name just a random name thrown in) I never would of guessed that my future wife would be right near me the whole time.

Attached people think this sort of platitude will make single people feel happy. It does not.The thing is, it's not meant to make you happy, it's just what works in my/our experience. Sure, we could say something like 'Don't worry, I'm sure your perfect hunk is just around the corner waiting for you', but it'd be BS and dishonest, and wouldn't actually help.
As someone who's sorta known you for a while via the board/Facebook and would like to see you find yourself a guy, you're shooting yourself in the foot by placing so much of your quest for happiness on your longed-for love relationships - I know 'cos I used to do it myself, and as a result didn't get the girls. Eventually after a whole lot of heartbreak and 'just friends' BS I decided I was gonna try and be happy on my own - or at least just live for myself and never ever be 'just friends' with women I was sexually attracted to - and if I found a girlfriend then it'd be a bonus rather than a necessity, and then surprise surprise, I started getting the girls - and damn awesome girls at that. My favourite quote - well, one of them - so far has been "Wow, you're an arsehole. When I'm rich we should get married" from a law student I'd been chatting politics with.
In being so 'I need to find a boyfriend'-obsessive you make yourself come across as needy, clingy and dependent, and unless they have a major Messiah complex that puts potential partners off. Just take a gay cruise or something, have a whole heap of meaningless no-strings-attached sex, try to lead a well-rounded life pursuing your interests, maintain an active social life, stop looking so hard and let the girls/guys come to you. If you put yourself out there and are confident and happy, or at least content, within yourself, people find that attractive and you get the guys/girls.

I'd say I'm sorry if this is kinda harsh, but I'm not 'cos it's the truth and obsessing/angsting over your singleness won't help.

Towers_Spy

In my experience, girls can tell what a guy's agenda is in about 10 seconds. If you go around thinking 'need a girlfriend, so horny, please be attracted to me' they'll know, and be instantly scared off. No girl wants to talk to a guy when she can tell that all he's thinking about is getting her bra off. Seriously. Be happy in you, because how could anyone like you if you can't like yourself? If you are trying to find a nice person to share your life, treat people how you'd like to be treated, and make friends instead of putting so much pressure on 'getting' the person/intimacy. You might have to go through some 'just friends' relationships, but its a hella lot better than nothing IMO

Can't you still just use your aussie eBay account but look at international sales at the Australian ebay? Because on the US Ebay some items are posted only within the US.

i can look at them, but not bid on them...

there's about 3-4 ultra magnus vs skywarp misb i am looking at, trying to bid on them. but yeah, they don't want international bidders.

i have an aunt in america but she doesnt have an ebay account, and i asked her about making one, but meh.

This thread has been quite active this week, maybe it's just a coincidence that many of us OTCA boarders are having a crud week.

My week's been drama after drama and it's got to the point where I've decided to unleash my fury on anyone in the public that pisses me off, like yesterday I was walking I passed this house that had a dog that ran up to me and started barking so I roared back 'DON'T F*CK WITH ME YOU STUPID B!TCH I'VE GOT ENOUGH PROBLEMS F*CKBAG'. The dog actually squealed away and the owner had dropped their jaw but I did not give one flying crap.

The thing is, it's not meant to make you happy, it's just what works in my/our experience. Sure, we could say something like 'Don't worry, I'm sure your perfect hunk is just around the corner waiting for you', but it'd be BS and dishonest, and wouldn't actually help.
...

When I'm rich we should get married" from a law student I'd been chatting politics with.
...
If you put yourself out there and are confident and happy, or at least content, within yourself, people find that attractive and you get the guys/girls.

I'd say I'm sorry if this is kinda harsh, but I'm not 'cos it's the truth and obsessing/angsting over your singleness won't help.

Pulled the words right out of my mouth, sir!

So true esp the bold bits. From my experience, girls actually get turned off by 'nice' guys who are always hovering around waiting for them to say 'jump', then the does exactly that, jump. Seriously, how boring is that? They might as well get a pet or something.

.
What you need to do is find yourself first, only then can you seek out and find others.

and that...

^^This totally.

So true. There's gotta be more to your life than chasing skirts. In fact, they'll find it a challenge and fight for your attention if they know that they can't have all of you. You know, like you are so devoted to something that you will never be 100% theirs (eg: TFs, basketball, surfing, etc) - it just eats them up inside (okay, exaggerating, but something like that).

From what I've been told over the years, girls actually find that sexy (and a challenge). The loser is the guy that is willing to throw down whatever he is doing once the girl comes a-callin' (what I've been told by girls too).

I do however dress like a bum and drive an old car so they could be under the impression that I am just an unemployed schmuck :p

intelligent and witty guy like you, if you actually bothered to engage with girls, I'm sure they will flock to you in droves. :D

Over the last year I've come to the conclusion that my plan should be to finish my degree, become uncontrollably rich and then attract gold diggers from whom I will hide the majority of my assets and funds using a series of cunning constructed trusts and tax shelters, which I will combine with keeping a reasonably low living standard as to nullify the prospect of alimony payments.

Basically my law degree is teaching my how to effectively be a lonely rich bastard.

Dude, I don't want to shatter your dream. This is coming from a lawyer (ahem, me) who has been in the top Australian and international law firms, to a soon to be lawyer (you) - unless a miracle happens, you are very unlikely to be "uncontrollably" rich by being a lawyer, "constructed trusts" and "tax shelters" are not going to help you much.

Sure, you will make more than the average joe, in fact the moment you start you'll be earning 2 to three times more than your peers from other courses (bar Medicine and bankers and maybe other minor categories). BUT, you'll not be uncontrollably rich. You'll be comfortable, sure. You'll have lots of disposable income, sure. But, not uncontrollably rich.

Wanna be uncontrollably rich within 2-3 years of graduation? Go be a trader, stock broker or investment banker. But I gotta tell you, its not for everybody. Some people hate it.

My banker friend who went to law school with me just got a bonus of US$700,000, for 3 months' work. Not to mention that his basic pay is more than on par with a lawyer's. That, is uncontrollably rich and of a scale and a magnitude that is inconceivable, even to lawyers or doctors who cannot ever hope to achieve pay on that sort of scale (if they stay purely lawyers and doctors).

Sorry for that, I just don't want you to have this rosy picture and get smack disillusioned when you get into the working world and find out its not what its touted to be (I know it pissed me off back in the day).

The good news is, you'll still be exceeding comfortable as a lawyer, but you'll unlike be able to say that you're "set for life".

Ahh man HD... you just shattered my dream! ...

This is a reality I think I have to accept aswell. I am currently doing a law degree aswell- I have heaps long to go- bout 3 semesters left of degree and also have to do all the PLT and college of law after. Working and family/personal issues held me back a bit.

I'd like to think I can be rich as a lawyer but just isn't true- as I have friends who have been working and tell me its crap- long stressful days. Add to that fact Im at UWS - shite compared to UNSW or Sydney Uni. I am under no illusion of how hard it is and the amount of money that will be there- but I hold in hope it's all worth it.. I kinda got depressed for a while and that affected my eagerness to study- but now tfs make me wanna finish quick so I can buy more with that influx of disposable income.

Anyhow, I just hope I can eventually earn $100k/yr and I will be content.

And it is 3:30AM right now- I should have been studying for my corporations law exam rather than type this ...haha..

You know what? At the end of the day, its not about the money. You gotta like what you are doing. Thinking about a job in terms of how much money it can make you is almost akin to chasing girls so you can get under their skirt (this is me trying to link the 2 predominant topics, perhaps unsuccessfully). It's painful and one may not be so successful at doing it.

I do what I do cos I love doing it. Long hours so what? It's just more fun to me. Like I said, I can't be a banker, I just don't like it. So that sort of money was never meant to be made by me anyway.

Just a thought try to do really well and get into one of the top 6 at least (if that is your cup of tea). It's very very difficult to move to higher tier firms if you start at a small or mid sized firm. It's just the reality. I have uni friends who have been very very unhappy for years because of this.

Anyhow, I just hope I can eventually earn $100k/yr and I will be content.

You will likely get there in 2-3 years give or take and also depending on which tier firm you work for. Obviously you will get there faster if you're at one of the top three firms.

Good luck with Corporations Law. I loved it. Not sure the you do. heh.

gdmetro I'm just about to finish third year and I've got four to go. Plus a year of honours in political science that it's looking likely that I'm going to be doing next year - mainly because out of high school over here they don't let you do straight law (I've been doing Law/Arts with a major in Politics). 3 years has seen me cover the units on Criminal, Tort, Contract, Property, Equity and Trusts, and half of Constitutional Law (of course excluding the advanced versions of these units you do later in your degree).

The good news is, you'll still be exceeding comfortable as a lawyer, but you'll unlike be able to say that you're "set for life".

This disappoints me. If this won't make me uncontrollably rich, as television has led me to believe, what's the point? I could be cleaning toilets on a minesite for comfortable money...

(not said in a disparaging sense, I've got more than one good mate that does that kind of work. Just said in the sense that it won't take the better part of a decade to qualify for).

Maybe I should take up betting on football...

Another death in the family. What is this, year of killing off my bloodline?

As for vents, has this ever happened to you? Longed desperately for something but put off by the price, but when you finally have enough cash when it's on sale, they're all gone?
Or you purchased something to go along with said item, and when it finally arrives, the original purchase has vanished off the face of the earth and cannot be located no matter how many time you turn home upside-down?

Happened to me recently. While on a trip in July, I picked up the 'G.I.Joe: Rise of Cobra' Pit Commando figure. This fantastic little toy was never released by the big retailers here, but he was found at one specialty store (and if they had Agent Helix too, she'd be snapped up as well).
So after coming home, the Commando (still on his card) was placed somewhere that I would remember to find him once the Pit itself was purchased.

Fast-forward to November, and after searching many Toys R Us stores, the Pit is finally mine. But what's this? Where's the Pit Commando? Why can I not find him? Who's General Hawk going to banter on now?

So now I have a Pit MIB, with no Commando. What's the point opening it without a Commando to be guardian? The whole house has been torn apart but to no avail. He's gone.
It's personally believed several Cobra Vipers have come alive and kidnapped him while defenceless. :p

:Our nightshift guy had a pretty bad car accident ,He was on his way to work and ended up in hospital with a broken leg and other injuries,So lately we all had to go out and cover the shifts,So I ended up doing 2 of these shifts usually I do 9am-5pm Sunday-Thursday,I wasnt real happy about doing the shifts but I did them to help my boss.My beef with the boss was Why did I have to do them, when the 2 other newish guys you hired to actually do some graveyards were kicking up a stink about doing them???,So the 3 of us ended up with a couple each to cover the shifts,After the first week the youngest 19 went to the boss literally crying and saying that he couldnt do 3 nightshifts in was killing him,the eldest 55-60 a couple weeks prior had rung the business manager on his mobile to complain about the shifts that my boss had given him i.e the nightshifts,so as you can see there were problems everywhere......I again stood up and said that seeing though my sleeping pattern and family life were ruined at the moment then I might as well do the other shift which took me to 3 nightshifts:mad::(.So we eventually hired another guy to do all the nightshifts so lately on my 3 nightshifts ive been training this guy getting him up to standards everythings been going good until tonight!I work at a petrol station,so after hours(11pm-5am) its lock door policy,Its Schoolies where I live so lots of young kids around they were all good,Most people you serve through the night counter are pleasant and have a joke with them and its all good, then tonight im trying to help a young guy with directions and then I have this moron with giant big mo like hulk hogan standing right in front of the buzzer for like 5 freaking minutes mind you there a big green sign saying please use nightcounter???,He eventually makes his way round the nightwindow and just lets abuse roll out his mouth im like WTF,Drunk as,Hurling abuse at me at like 2.30am in the morning.I said good one mate and threatened to ring the cops and he walked away, fuming off his head:confused: I am so over Drunk Aussies like that,What do you do?

I have learnt that people are stupid. My missus works at a petrol station as well. She deals with idiots all the time. Like when they mumble the pump number, or come back in and complain because the told her the wrong pump number, or point out of the window saying "the white one" when there are like 5 white cars. Worst is when they just through the money on the counter and walk off. I've seen some pretty bad ones as well. Like one night she was counting up, and the other person was on. A few people were waiting in line, and one guy speaks out about there being two people behind the counter and only one line, saying he wants to go home to his family and blah blah blah. He ended up getting the shits and walked up to the front, threw the note and took off.

When ever I have an encounter with a highly drunk individual, I verbally confuse 'em!

They're usually at the state where sentence structure takes a back seat, do the same back. The look of confusion is marvelous.

And when you get the "wha fck ya just say ye bastard?" reply, hit back with "same thing you said. what was that?"

Will usually just go in circles till they leave. usually.....

Yes, it certainly seems like both you Ryathalas and 1AZRAEL1's partner, like most service attendants, certainly seem to be at the raw end of the stick and I agree that some of the louts that stumble in a circa 3:00am can be completely ridiculous - but it's the sober ones who think you're purely there for their sake are the ones that I get most annoyed at (I'm not a servo attendant, I just despise the rudeness of some people).

My brother worked in a servo for 4 years and when people would do that he'd put the money in his pocket and say "Cheers mate... Now how are you going to pay for your petrol?" They'd get so mad. Then once they joined the line they'd usually bitch and moan really loudly, so when it would be their turn to pay he would be over the top nice to them. Funny thing is that used to upset them even more:D

Sound similar to something one of my friends did once.
We were walking through a shopping mall and someone tried to offer her some pamphlets. She just looked at them straight in the eye, looking very serious, and then waved her hand and said "These are not the droids you are looking for", and then walked away.

I have learnt that people are stupid. My missus works at a petrol station as well. She deals with idiots all the time.

I did 10 years at perol station(s). Nice job, shame about the customers though. Petrol is a grudge purchase, so many people object to paying for it in the start. Then they usually buy on the way to/from work and allow no time so they will be running late. Then they object to having to wait as everyone else is doing the same. I found the nice people were being drowned out by the prats.

Soul destroying job and I wold do practically any other job to avoid working in one again.

The things that made me laugh though was:
1. Why when customer forgets their wallet, is it MY problem/fault?
2. Apparently I have personal control over the price of the fuel (this was at the tme when Perth's fuel went from 60c/l to 80c/l) and I put it up just before each individual customer came in.

This one was GOLD. Cust. 'bought' 2 disposable cameras from my sevo. 3 weeks later, they return saying they want a refund. I asked why, as we don't refund for the heck of it. Were they broken? Couldn't tell as they were still in packet.
'Why should I refund?' I ask. Because they can buy a real camera at Big W for the same price. I told them we don't price match and perhaps, if Big W opened on a Sunday (when the date of the receipt was) we might price match, but that was unlikely.

Cust: Blah blah blah, rant, rave and a bit of swearing. After the swearing I questioned whether they actually bought the cameras at all. They waggled reciept (which had been through the washing machine at me) More swearing and threats to call consumer affairs.

"why did you buy 3 disposable cameras anyway as you had mentioned that you weren't going anywhere."

more raving and carrying on. Eventually I said that I was not gonna refund the cameras (well I had been saying it the whole time, just this time more definite) and they should leave before I call the police as I didn't appreciate their behaviour to my staff and other customers. They asked to speak to the manager. I told them they were (I loved that one). Evantually they left.

One other time I had an ex-staff member threaten to bash me and run me down in the street if they saw me. Then they would come back to the site and wonder why I would't let their pump work...

I could go on and on, but I won't. To summarise, console operators at servos are generally nice people. Be good to them as buttweeds give them a lot of hassle they don't deserve.

Exactly. They are only doing their job. Whenever someone complains about the price, she just tells them to call up price office and complain, they are the ones that make the changes. Unfortunately, they are the ones on the front line that have to deal with unruly people. And I do feel sorry for them. Hence why I am nice to people behind counters. Even at Maccas when they forget something in my meal, or give me something wrong.

When people used to complain to my brother about petrol prices he used to offer a smart arse explanation like...

"Of course I set the price that high. Do you have an idea how much it costs to insure a Ferrari?" or " Well those trips to Bermuda every year don't pay for themselves":D

GoktimusPrime

I can sympathise with servo console operators -- I worked as a console op one summer (after finishing high school and before uni started), so I know about stuff like how they don't set petrol prices. But sometimes when I ask them question about the prices, some operators get overdefensive and just don't want a bar of what I'm asking, because they're automatically assuming that I'm assuming that they set the prices... which isn't true. So I often can't get straight answers about fuel prices from console operators because they probably do cop a lot of stupid questions and abuse from other people. :/

Coud also be that they don't really know. IN my years of servo working, there are a ot of people who don't do any thinking and wouldn't know anything more than how to do the day to day activities. Admittedly there are sure to be some butt-weeds working there, as with any job/social interaction.

there are so many bad drivers out there. people who drive 50 in a 60km lane/do not give way at roundabouts/and those that dont know how to indicate - being oblivious to all other drivers.

i get a lot of road rage building up inside me, and it it really unpleasant. i have noticed that i have been driving more aggressively, but it really is due to everyone else on the road unable to maintain the maximum speed limit and those having no road-sense at all. if it were just one person on the one trip, i'd be okay - but no, it is 5-10+ drivers that piss me off every time i need to go somewhere of significant distance.

It's a hit and miss at TRU Gepps X. Sometimes you get some really nice people that will do everything right and sometimes you get the oddball that's very vague and doesn't know what you're talking about. As for Sefton, I can't judge as I don't go there much.

I went to TRU TTP on Thursday and the couple of blokes working there were talking about how they thought some customer was stupid and made fun of them (even swore about them). I know that sometimes maybe the customer is in the wrong, but to badmouth them out in the open in the presence of other customers is clearly unprofessional. I think it's generally not the case, but I am actually surrounded by shopping centres with both. I live five minutes away from a shopping centre that has a Big W and a Kmart (and Safeway and Coles) as the only major stores in it.
