Looked around locally for months without success for a Peter Gabriel CD or DVD that had all the songs of his that I wanted, so went online and found two that I liked (DVD of the music clips and DVD of a recent concert - I've been collecting Concert DVDs, and when I get a home theatre, it'll be like being there, without the annoying crowds and hassle of getting there). Bought both, from a cheap american online store, and I kid you not - within a week of getting them in the mail, I find both in a JB store, as a 2-pack!

TYPICAL...

Now, the price was probably still a little cheaper to import the ones I did, but I would have prefered Region 4 PAL copies, even if it did cost a few dollars more.

Course the same people out there getting jobs.. the very concept drives me nuts when Centrelink ask me why havent I got a job.. I dont know sirs.. apparently my IQ is higher than Room temp

Reading these posts about certain people in jobs made my blood boil... I have just been turned down for a job that i really wanted, because i was 'too qualified'. This is not the first time it happened either.

What the HELL does that even mean?? I'm there, applying for the job, i'm obviously good enough for the position, but they'll give it to some other dumb s**t because they 'are sure i could find another job'. Ive been unemployed for months because I'M TOO QUALIFIED FOR THE JOBS I'M INTERESTED IN!!

Spent all night with my wife at Blacktown hospital cause she was violently ill and 9.5 weeks pregnant.

We waited for hours in the emergency room while junky after junky, and people with busted wrists from pub brawling all got in before her.

It was an absolute joke!

Suffice to say, I had a few choice words.

The good news is that she's back home now and resting.

Sorry to hear that dude, I know waiting in hospitals suck, escpecially when other people get put before you.

Mine is not so much a vent but I am saddened. Dennis Hopper has only been given a couple of months to live. His cancer has spread and become inoperable. I really liked him, done some brilliant movies. Sad to see it happen.

I had no idea about this, very sad indeed. I liked him in both Waterworld & Mario Bro's, even though both films were terrible otherwise.

Thanks mate. It wasn't so much that people went in before her; it was the fact that those that did had apparent self-inflicted ailments. My wife is 9.5 weeks pregnant and was suffering from severe stomach pains and vomiting in the emergency room. The guy that sitting next to us was bragging about how much worse off the other guy was that he hit while nursing a broken hand. Dickhead!

If there was a mother with a sick child or elderly person I wouldn't have minded.

I'm actually more annoyed by people who check themselves into Emergency because they 'believe' they might need urgent attention. There was a guy whose wee-wee was a strange colour, a woman who couldn't sleep and had apparently tried everything, a couple whose child had stomach pains and a guy with a sore wrist. Go to the GP in the morning FFS!

Meanwhile my dad had nearly sliced off toe which was bleeding but bandaged haphazardly by myself. We checked-in and waited behind these people for like an hr and a half before being told by the nurse we could recieve immediate service if we were willing to fork out cash at the private ward next door.

No, I didn't. He was twice my size. :(

Although there was one time my next door neighbour and I were playing with our Transformers in our driveway, and bigger kid (even bigger than the one who tore up my Slog tech specs) came along on his bike and tried to run over our TFs (thankfully his aim was crap - his wheels narrowly missed Mirage, Soundwave, Apeface and Snapdragon by centimetres) -- I was stunned, but my friend ran next door and called for reinforcements in the form of his mum! :D

Guh... there was one kid at school who swiped my Skalor and scratched the paint off his nose on purpose (he totally denied it of course). Ironically he later sold me a Cyclonus for $2 (in hindsight he probably shoplifted it, but it never occured to me at the time) -- so on one hand he was willing to pick on me for my Transfandom, but on the other hand he was happy to exploit my Transfandom to make a quick two bucks. :/

I think those people on those boards are upset about 'having' to pay a fortune for the BotCon seekers, when really their own shortsightedness is to blame for ignoring the obvious eventual release of the remaining Seekers by Hasbro or Takara. We all know well that Hasbro and even Takara will redeco and remould figures as much as possible, especially moulds used for the Seekers and Optimus.

Besides, Hasbro versions of Thundercracker, Thrust and Dirge, won't be the same as the BotCon ones. And the Hasbro ones won't even be the same as the Takara ones either.

They seem to think that BotCon have exclusive rights to those three Classics Seekers just becaue they produced their versions of them. They would only have exclusivity to the remoulded parts and specific colour schemes on their own figures - something that Hasbro and Takara don't/didn't have anyway. And the value of BotCon Thrust will still hold because it is a different mould and colour to the Hasbro version.
And what of Universe Overkill? It was also a BotCon figure, but no one seemed to care when Hasbro released it as well (in a different colour scheme of course).

I think that's over simplifying the issue.

Back then then Hasbro had announced that the Classics line was cancelled. It was also heavily implied that this was permanent and the that the remaining seekers would be released as Botcon exclusives so that they would at least exist in some form for fans to enjoy - This only further implied that Classics was over, finished. At this point nobody knew about Universe nor Henkei and Hasbro was heavily gearing towards the movie franchise.

The vast majority of fans believed the line was permanently cancelled and with good reason given Hasbro's announcements. These fans included not just myself but other much more experienced fans too so it was not just a few newbies that thought so. Naturally prices for the seekers went to ridiculous levels as at the time it seemed as the only way to complete your Classics collection was to acquire these exclusive toys.

Back then I had resigned myself to never completing my Classics collection and I remember several other people with similar thoughts as the Botcon seeker prices were outrageous due to demand. Thankfully an opportunity appeared to get them at a very reasonable price otherwise I would have never acquired them.

Some months later the Classics 2.0 was announced which became Universe and some months after that Henkei. It is now very easy to say that Hasbro or Japanese releases were obvious with the benefit of hindsight but back then we were trusting what was told to us by Hasbro.

Personally, I sympathize with those who paid $250-$300 per seeker. Back then it seemed as the only way to complete Classics and I understand why they feel cheated even though I would never have paid that price for them.

I am not complaining about the release, dude. I am actually considering buying one and happy that its actually available to all. I am simply showing some sympathy for those who did fork out the big cash for the botcon seekers instead of putting them down as 'your fault, you bought it' when the circumstances surrounding that release wasn't so clear cut.

Ode to a Grasshopper
28th March 2010, 08:27 PM
My issue (one of two) is less with the "I paid heaps and now a similar toy is available at usual retail price so I'm ticked off" - which is understandable enough - than with the way it's somehow only those who have the time and money to go to the conventions and/or splurge $300 on what is, when you get right down to it, just a toy, who seem to qualify as 'fans'. Like many of us here I would love to get my hands on the Botcon 07 set but it's not worth the outlay when there are things like food and rent etc that need paying - I'm quite happy with PCC Huffer over BotCon Huffer for the Odieverse.
For every fan who forked out several hundred dollars per seeker there are many many more who missed out entirely, and when you get right down to it Hasbro/TakTom are toy companies - they want to sell as many toys to as many customers as possible. Doing these repaints/remolds now is part of how HasTakTom gets the funds to make new TFs in the future - it's basically a net win aside from scalpers people who bought them up with the intent to sell them on later at inflated prices. The 'true fans' who just had to finish their Classics collection still have their exclusive seekers and have had them for several years over the rest of us, while now the rest of us have the chance to get more generic ones. Myself, aside from Starscream I'm just gonna go with whatever loose G1/reissue seekers I end up finding for my collection, but I do hope they do a mass-release TC and Dirge so those fans who want a full set of Classic/Universe seekers can get them and maybe we can all get some more new-mold Classics/Universe/Generation/whatever toys to boot.

Also, they're just toys!!! How can grown rational adults get so fired up over this stuff - it really is just like all those little kids locking themselves in their bedrooms for days or weeks on end because Optimus Prime died, except that we're supposed to be grown-ups now. I like collecting TFs sure, but it's just a hobby and the way select portions of the fandom seem to treat it like it's life-or-death important gets to me sometimes.
And yeah, I get the irony of my getting frustrated at other people getting frustrated over this kind of thing, but really...can we all grow up and get some perspective here? Optimus Prime dies, sure, but he is just a cartoon character...

Actually Generations Dirge has the potential to be the best of all Classics Dirges. It not only benefits from the Japanese 'proper' wings mold but it is likely to be accurately painted unlike the funny stripes of the henkei version.

In regards to pissed off fans, I do sympathize with them but yeah they should get over it. However there is no need to put them down for buying the botcon seekers as if they were stupid for having done so. That's what triggered my post not the first post on the subject which is justified.

Sky Shadow
28th March 2010, 08:43 PM
Re: this topic.

Let's face it - lots of us have spent money on toys only to have them reissued and see our toys plummet in 'value' - it happens all the time. Landcross for example, went from a rare Japanese 'exclusive' to being sold in little boxes for the price of Micromasters. If anyone really wants a Stepper they can now get a reissue for about a fiftieth of what original Steppers used to go for. Heck - now people can get all three original 1984 seeker toys as MISB Encores for less than a hundred bucks. If people are going to look at Transformers as expensive commodities, then - like the stock market - some investments will go up, others will inevitably go down. Nobody needs countless recolours of that same Classics seeker mould - it's the choice of individuals if they want to spend big bucks on toys. If TakaraTomy or Hasbro do inevitably happen to bring out similar ones later on, at least you got to play with them or have them in your collection for that little bit longer - it's that time you're paying for.

I think that's over simplifying the issue.

Back then then Hasbro had announced that the Classics line was cancelled.

Yes, the line was cancelled, but not the moulds. Anyone who felt cheated by assuming that a cancelled line meant that Hasbro could no longer use those moulds, was ignoring/forgetting the fact that Hasbro redeco just about everything, but not necessarily within the one line.

The entire Universe line was pretty much just redecos from existing 'cancelled' lines. So were a lot of Classics and store exclusives under the Universe and Classics banner.

A cancelled line just means we won't see a certain figure in that packaging again - it does not rule out a certain figure from ever being released under a future line/banner. That's the element of short-sightedness I was referring to (assuming a cancelled line means no more of that mould to ever be used).

I hate eBay right now. A US seller had half a dozen sealed items I wanted so I asked him if I could bid and how much postage to Australia would be. He told me and it was reasonable. And so for once I actually waited around for the last bit of the auctions in order to bid, and I get this message:

"This seller has set buyer requirements for this item and only sells to buyers who meet those requirements.
You are unable to bid on or buy this item because:
#
The seller doesn't ship to the country where your primary shipping address is located.

Note: If you are still interested in bidding on or buying this item, you may contact the seller and ask that they exempt you from any buyer requirements."

I already did that! What was the point in contacting him if I can't actually bid? And so I asked him in the last minutes to "please exempt me from any buyer requirements?" He said yes, but it still doesn't work. And it's too late now, so my items have gone for much less than I would have bid - in some cases less than a third as much. Like this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180486149459&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

and this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180486917467&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

and this:

and this:

yeah, same thing happened to me before.
now i know to bid twice whenever it doesnt clearly state that the auction accepts bids from worldwide or australia.

first bid is really early on just to check that i can bid at all. it will give sufficient time to contact the seller and get that sorted.
second bid is right at the very last few seconds.

I feel your pain Sky Shadow. The exact same thing happened to me with Ebay seller tencotoys.

It states in his auctions "WE WILL SHIP OUTSIDE THE U.S TO THE U.K AND CANADA. PLEASE CONTACT US FOR STANDARD RATES. THANK YOU", therefore I did and waited until the right time to bid and... "The seller doesn't ship to the country where your primary shipping address is located"

Unfortunately the right time to bid didn't give me enough time to re-contact him and get it sorted before the auction ended.

I just wanted you to know, you are not alone :)

I charged them up the first time and everything worked fine. Then I didn't touch the Wii for a couple of weeks. This morning I wanted to download Super Mario Kart from the Wii shop channel, but all the controllers' batteries were flat (which is normal for rechargables that don't hold their charge for long). So I switched on the mat to charge them up. The LEDs indicators were on and everything seemed fine. I went back after a couple of hours, and found that the batteries did not receive any charge at all! Not even a flash of blue light on the Wii remote when I pressed the A button! Kept charging for longer but there was nothing! So much for convenience... :( I guess I'll have to go back using Sanyo Eneloop batteries...

Im on a plan - is it still possible to get the same number??) back plus all the number Ive stored in there. :( What a lonely Easter this is:(:(

I feel for you mate, it's happened to me before too... losing a phone sucks big time!

Yes you can still obtain the same number, they re-issue a new sim card and re-assign your number to it.

Sadly the numbers you had stored are all long gone though (unless you backed up your phone contacts onto your PC or something)

I just accidentally left my celphone in the train. Sure enough when I got home I called it and well what do you expect, someone's tyurned it off already and prolly threw my sim card coz my answering inbox is all im getting. I even left in the display face of the cel my home number in case somebody does find it to CALL but I guess there's very little good samaritans these days. Now Ill have to go thru the trouble of buying another celphone and having to get back that number ( Im on a plan - is it still possible to get the same number??) back plus all the number Ive stored in there. :( What a lonely Easter this is:(:(

Sorry to hear that. That sucks.

Let me know when you get a new mobile and I will sms you my ph number again. I don't see why you wouldn't get the same mobile number when they cancel your current SIM (which you should do ASAP).

Yeah, just get another SIM card and your provider will do a SIM replacement for you. You keep the same number.

plus all the number Ive stored in there.

If you are with Optus and have a 3G SIM card, it auotmatically has a function called SIM Backup which backs-up your contacts to the optuszoo website.

Oh sweet! thaks for the info, Ill just have to be patient coz theyre all closed til tomorrow. But Ive contacted they're tech desk and theyve blocked the unit and sim for now just to be sure I dont get a $600 phone bill next bill period:o

I do need more than a new sim though, a whole new unit ( perhaps a more upgraded one) as well. Hopefully I can ask if I can convert my plan to one which includes a "0" upfront unit, as I went to their plan ( from prepaid) with my own unit and old Optus prepaid sim (converted). Getting the old numbers back will be a pain in the a$# but so long as there's other avenues to contact the people (email, PMs , in person) Im not too worried. Thanks for all your concern and replies guys... wasnt able to sleep last night coz i was quite upset of my carelessness. That phone lasted me 4 years , sigh....

I am with Virgin and only pay $30 a month for both voice and data services.

I originally had a GPS phone which was $0 with a 1 year plan for $30. After the 2 years they upgraded my phone for free to an internet enabled touch screen smart phone (GPS also included) for the same rate with data services added. The catch is only that I need to stay with them for 1 more year which I intended to do anyway. It's turned out amazingly well and now I have mobile internet all the time which helps me manage my accounts, check my email and even enter msn chat on the go.

5th April 2010, 12:47 AM
Well Ive been with them on the old unit for 2 years prepaid (4 years ago), then accepted converting to a plan 12months on a $60 a month which went down to $49 a month (its BYO - since i owned a unit and converted the sim) up to about a month ago then they offerred me to go for the $19 which is better, cheaper and tailored for me ( for 1 year contract) - since I use more my cel texting back overseas than using it here, then this happens, aaaaargh, ah well Ill have to try my luck if they can help me. I have no problem sticking with them beyond the contract year - heck ive been with them even when it was costing me much, I just hope they can do help me get a free better phone unit and sim replacement so Id have to spend less. I simply didnt budget for this:o

I used to be very Cellphone savvy back in Phil, prolly coz its always IN to have the latest ( and there were heaps new models coming in all the time), but here the interest isnt that strong, Im more now, if it can call and text Im happy, if it has added features like cameras, internet MMS etc, its good but I rarely use it anyways ( except prolly for the camera) so I have not much idea now what models are better and wotnot, Ill prolly have to rely on what's available on the free phone list hehehe hopefully there's a NOkia there somehow - Im more used to the keypad set-up friendliness.

kup
5th April 2010, 12:57 AM
If it's going to cost you nothing and you are still sticking to the plan then why not have something with features?

If you get the internet enabled phone, you can use web SMS to contact relatives in and friends in the Philipines which is much cheaper than regular SMS.

If you use your PC at home web SMS is actually free.

as some of you know i have been planning a trip to Japan with a friend of mine (herefore referred to as Friend A) we have planned out a fair bit of our trip so far but last night another friend of mine (herefore reffered to as friend B) found out about the trip we were planning and decided to go with us instead of going on his own in may 2011, we didnt even invite him he just decided he was gonna go with us, and then he starts changing the plans Friend A and I had already made, starting with "you shouldnt go to hiroshima it's boring there", moving on to "you should stay in osaka for about a week not just a few days", then culminating to "we wont stay at a hotel in tokyo we'll stay with [Friend A]'s grandma instead"
one reason we never told Friend B about the trip to Japan we were planning was because we knew if we told him he would decide to come (which he did) and then would start changing our plans (which he has) if he was just going to tag along on our trip but not change any of our plans (maybe he can add a few of his own but he shouldnt change ours) then it would be great to have him along for the trip he's a pretty fun guy to hang out with, he knows his way around some of the places we wanna go since he's already been there but when he starts barking orders and changing the plans that he didnt make he just feels like a real jerk stupid Friend B

Get him drunk, tie him up, lock him in the closet the day before your trip, then you and friend A can go to the airportbefore you board your flight inform someone who knows both you and friend B to get him out of the closet but by this time he'd be late for the flight and viola he's free off your hair. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH!!!

I bought the latest issue of ongoing G1 - with the Wildman cover too - straight after purchase I stick the comic in the storage compartment of Optimus Pram (yes, that's the pram's name) and went straight back to my car without any delay. And during that transition the book has just VANISHED! Everything else in the storage compartment was still there, just not the comic book!! :(

If anyone finds it at Parramatta Westfields (level 3 - possibly in the car park parents section), please LMK. I've already contacted Phantom Zone and asked them to reserve another copy for me. If they get another copy in for me and someone else finds my old copy, they can keep it. I'd rather it go to a fellow TF fan rather than being thrown away. :(

Simple - Don't do as he says.

the simplest option would also result in several arguements and he's the kind of person who would probably go behind our back and cancel our reservations so we are forced to stay with Friend A's grandma

Firend B is the kind of person you cant reason with, it's always he's right you're wrong, he's better you're worse, he's the winner you're the loser

the day he decided to "tag along on our trip" (A.K.A take over our trip) i said to him like 4 or 5 times "i dont really want to stay with [Friend A]'s Grandma, cant we just stay at a hotel and each time he's response was "nah, we'll just stay with her, it's better that way"

i dont think i want Enemy A to be the result, your idea is tempting though

Friend B claims the reason he doesnt want to stay at a hotel is to save money (which is understandable) but i'm pretty sure his reason is actualy that he wants to see Friend A's Cousin again (since he "likes" her) and he is more likely to do that if he stays with Friend A's family (grandma)
funny thing is Friend A doesnt seem to get a say in Friend B's plan either even though it's his grandma

oh and now we can add Friend C to this as another buddy of mine heard about our plans to go to japan and asked if he could come too (if he can save up the money) but i think Friend C will just go along with what we want to do since the only thing on his list of things to do in japan is just "maid cafe"

I'm thinking i can use Friend C as a good reason to not stay with Friend A's grandma since Friend C has never met Friend A's grandma and it would probably be kinda strange bringing along a guy who she has never met before, and ontop of that since most hotels charge per room per night we can now split the cost of the room 4 ways instead of 2 or 3 ways making it cheaper (when we find a new hotel to stay at)

chances are by the time we actually go to japan we'll have probably added Friends D-Z to this list too (if i had that many friends)

wow my messages are always so long, sorry

remake your old plans with friend A & now C, Don't tell friend B! The day before you depart for Japan, casually ask if he has all of his travel documents in order and in a safe place. The, when his back is turned, Steal them. The plane ticket, his passport. put them in an envelope, addressed to him and pop them in a mailbox. Presto no travel documents means no friend B on the japan trip.

Last Tuesday (March 30) my wife signed up with a door-to-door salesman to turn our home phone and internet over to Optus. The salesman said we HAD to disconnect our old internet account the next day.

I did not see the necessity but my wife was adamant so off it went. At the time I thought the worst case would be no internet for a few days (the home phone would continue until the changeover).

I rang Optus today (April 9) to see where our internet starter kit was only to be told we were still in the cooling off period of 10 business days... and once that was over there would be ANOTHER 10 business days to process the order. So we'll be without home internet or email until at least the end of the month. (Just means when I'm at work I'll be spending more time on the net :p).

Sure it's not the end of the world but it's damn annoying. And my wife won't be able to check her work emails to see what shifts she'll be on.

And I don't see why we had to close our old account so soon.:mad:

I got knocked back from the JET Program.:( Between being young, adaptable, widely travelled, and qualified -if inexperienced -as an ESL teacher I really thought I had it this time. I don't know why I didn't make it and they have a policy of not going into the reasons behind their choices so I can't even find out (they just send a form letter citing intense competition), but unless they suddenly had hundreds of trained-, Japanese fluent, and more experienced other ESL teachers apply then I just don't get it. This has been a lifelong dream of mine and I've tried for it twice now - who do I have to kill to get into this damn program?

Although "B" has a point, about saving money... and "You" and "A" (maybe "C" ) may have a change of mind and decide to do this ("as long, as it is not going to be a problem for A's Granmother")

but IMO Firestorm what i have interpreted from what on you posts so far ....
For some reason i feel "B" is going to control what "You" and "A" (and probably "C") are going to do on this trip even, if there are going to be plans and if this trip is a holiday, it kind of sound like it is not going to be one for anybody other than "B"... if this is not going to be resolved.:(

I hope the tickets are not booked, as this would leave a option open not to go with B "otherwise" I hope everyone have a good and safe holiday ("especially" if it dose turn out like the reason i said above.")

On an unrelated note I’ve had a pretty annoying day, I woke up at 9am (after only getting like 2 hours sleep) and had to get ready for work, today I was working the mid shift instead of a close shift like I’d normally do so I was working at the same time as another worker there, who happened to be the person who seems to want me fired (she keeps complaining about me to my boss) so I put up with her till her shift ends then i have to do the rest of my shift alone, my shift started at 11am and ended at 6:30pm but the woman who was taking over after my shift was running late so I didn’t leave work till 7pm then I get a call from my mum saying she lost her car keys and wont be coming to pick me up from work for about another hour or so, I finally get home at 9:15pm, oh and also a friend asked me to come to his birthday party tonight and I said "I’d like to but I’d rather go home and sleep" so now I feel like a jerk for not going (even though if I had of said yes I wouldn’t have gotten there till about 10pm when the party stated at 6pm

The Cash Converters in Burnie has closed down so I couldn't go looking for Aliens VS Predator 2 (out of stock at EB games 'cos it's too old), and I really want to eat some virtual heads to let off some steam and have no FPSs for my PC - the only two I've really enjoyed enough to get over the past few years are AVP2 and Battlefield 1942, neither of which I can find anymore...damn my old-school gaming habits!

I was bored so I decided to play with my phone and discovered that when you dial '911' it automatically diverts to 000.

Are people that dumb for this to be needed? "Quick! What's the number to 911!!"

Edit: I have read that the reason for this was so that kids who watch American cartoons/shows and mistakenly learn to dial '911' for emergencies instead of '000'.

Yeah sounds good but as a kid I knew that in an Emergency I needed to call '000' not '911'. Why? Because my school taught me to do so and so should parents.

The intention wasn't to crank call anyone. I didn't think it would divert to 000 and expected either a recording telling me to dial 000 or for the 'invalid number' message since that is a US Emergency number not Australian. I just dialed it out of a whim and as soon as the 000 recording begun, I hanged up realizing it had diverted.

Do they still teach kids to dial 000 at school in an emergency or it's that now deemed as politically incorrect or some other crap?

Yeah, it's still pretty much drummed into kids to call 000 - it would have to be a pretty ignorant one to call 911 - maybe out of the stress of the moment it could happen? I would assume it's probably American tourists calling 911 here that's the biggest reason for the redirection.

holy cow... so does it also divert to 000 if you dial 999 (UK emergency number), or emergency numbers from other countries? Or are they assuming that only Americans would be silly enough to dial 911 while in Australia? ;)

Yeah, it's still pretty much drummed into kids to call 000
I've only ever once seen someone explicitly teach kids to dial 112 for an emergency from their mobile phones. I don't know if dialling 000 on a mobile phone works the same as dialling 112, but the advantage of dialling 112 is:

When dialling '112' on GSM mobile phones, access is provided regardless of the presence or validity of the SIM card within the phone, or whether the keypad is locked. The '112' number cannot be dialled from the fixed network.

•'112' can be dialled anywhere in the world with GSM coverage and callers will be automatically translated to that country's particular emergency number.

•A caller is able to connect to the emergency services answering point if GSM mobile coverage is available from any carrier's network at the location of the call.
reference (http://www.hoax-slayer.com/mobile-phone-tips.shtml)

So yeah, dialling 112 overrides a phone's PIN access and/or keypad lock. This can be useful in situations like say finding someone unconscious and you're unable to use your own phone for some reason, you can take their phone and even if it's keypad locked or switched off if you dial 112 it will give you emergency call access on their phone.

How about for tourists? Unfortunately, 000 isn't part of the in-flight safety training on flights to Australia. And it really shouldn't take too much thought to realize that the one time you don't want to give someone a recording asking them to dial another number, is during an emergency.

no one travelling should need to remember the designated country's emergency numbers when they are travelling, you don't want to 2nd guess these when it is critical. I guess the Aust goverment is good that way.

I would not be surprised if other country's emergency numbers have been programmed and diverted to 000.

Well I have an exam that starts in 8 hours and 40 minutes.

That's a really bad thing to say most of the time, but especially at 12 40am on a Saturday. Because what could be worse than an Equity law exam? An equity law exam at 9am. On a Saturday morning. Closed book. On the ANZAC Day long weekend.

I really wish there was something that I could say to justify that decision on the unis part - something like oh I was shit in another exam so had to take a supp. But no, they've just decided to get all 150 of us in on a Satuday morning.

Going on the damn "do not call" list doesn't work because they use the con "we're not selling you anything, we're just giving you these fantastic offers".

As I said, they don't call themselves telemarketers, I tried to tell them that I'm on the do not call list but they said pretty much what I posted above.
While they might not be trying to sell me something at the moment I have learned that my number does not just "win $1000 worth of holiday coupons" without any catches.
Especially considering they don't care about who they talk to (I have said "no, no one by that name lives here", they didn't care, just kept going), just that the number is what they called.

Do what I'm planning, naked dsl & mobile phone.

Mum is more eager for this than I thought, she always said she hated "those stupid mobiles", but when I mentioned this (screening telemarketers who shouldn't even have the number because it wouldn't be in the phone book anymore if we had mobile), and that it's a crapton cheaper than the extra ~$23/month without even making calls, she's very keen for it. I'm thinking the $1 month tpg deal would be sweet.

Now I just have to wait until I can switch, I can't yet from adsl2. :(

But until then, I'll give you this tip, if there is no answer to your hello for at least 1-2 seconds (is longer than it sounds when you are actually talking to someone), means it's a telemarketer, just hang up. It's funny when you start to hear their blurb just as you put the handset down on the button. :)

And they scratch their heads on why people are deserting the landline.

I used to make the mistake of selling starting at 99cents. "Oh that's how you garner interest". That's a load of crap, you just end up with one bidder, not worth my time.

So last time I sold stuff, I put everything starting at min of $5/$10. Guess what? Most sold. And those with one bid made it worth my time, as those items would have had only one bid anyway.

Oh yay I see Jessica Watson is landing at Sydney this weekend. Rich kid sails around the world in an expensive yacht given to her by someone else. Who cares. It's laughable that now her local MP is considering putting her forward for the Young Australian of the Year Award.

She's sailed on a boat for a few months attempting but failing to create a world record. She's not bettered anyone's lives, she's not given to the community, in fact she's summarily failed to do what she set out to, negligently causing damage to another vessel along the way. The only thing "truly remarkable" about this 'feat' is how quick the Australian public is to embrace mediocrity and irrelevance.

My DS lite cracked at the right hinge and then a small peice of the hinge came off.

Now the screen is floppy. Dont you just hate that problem.....

I have to send it to Nintendo for repairs. Luckily I have an old chunky DS to cover for it while it is getting fixed

My daughters DS Lite cracked in the exact same spot and now has a floppy screen too. But i'm pointing more towards my daughters fault. She takes her DS everywhere and it occasionally gets dropped :o But it is the only point on the DS which locks the top screen in it's position so i guess it does take som stress at that exact point.

Most mail forwarders charge a fee, but you can probally save at least US$20 rather then pay the US$43 to ship from him to you directly.
I havn't tried this yet with eBay, just other things, but it seems like a good method to try.

You could offer to mark the payment as a gift... taking away the sellers liability. I have not tried this method yet, but have considered it once or twice. In the olden days I would send US dollars in an evelope, mainly for records from ebay etc... sometimes you have to be the one to trust.

For sellers it's not about 'liking' foreigners, it's about people using paypal to rip off sellers.

Most of you know that I was undertaking extensions at my place putting on a new room. This was supposedly finished last Friday with the builder rushing the job towards the end like he wanted to get out as fast as he could.

Well, as anyone in Sydney would know, we had a but-load of rain all day (I bet you can see where this is going) and the first thing I did this morning was call the wife when I got to work and asked her how the new drainage system was holding up. She said there were a 'few drips' in our enclosed BBQ area but nothing major.

When I got home, I went out the back to check and sure enough there was a pool of water dripping from the side of the house and under the eaves. You could even see the damp spot on the eaves meaning that water was under the roof and near the electrical cabling.

I called the builder as I noticed one gutter was completely blocked off by a metal plate causing it to over-flow into the roof. He said to me that the water should be flowing the other way towards the opposite downpipe even though our roof is tilted in the other direction! I calmly explained this to him and the fact that he chopped off the gutter which now had no where to run and he replied with "what would you like me to do?"

To cut a long story short, I was up on a flat metal roof in the dark and pouring rain all night tonight drilling holes in the gutters and eaves to release the pressure to avoid the internal ceiling from getting water damage and potentially collapsing :mad::mad:

Posting about dodgy builder

I think you can actually get him in alot of trobule for that, I'm sure there is an ombudsman that deals with complaints about shoddy builders. His excuse "what would you like me to do" is a pretty piss poor effort. If they do the work wrong in the first place, I am pretty sure they are supposed to fix it for free.

Can always ask Fair Trading (http://www.fairtrading.nsw.gov.au/default.html).

Thanks for the advice 1AZRAEL1. I thought that I had alleviated the problem last night but the wife just called and said that it was raining again this morning and water was flooding in under the eaves. It appears as though it has little to do with the blocked gutter; more likely to be something else with the roof. She called the builder and demanded that he come today to fix it as it's likely to cause an electrical fire.

If not done to my satisfaction, Dept. of Fair Trading will be my next course of action.

I suggest you go and ask them yourself. I have noticed that some teachers will mark you really bad but then make a positive comment at the end as encouragement or not to put you down. To me doing that insults intelligence as it feels like a cheap attempt at encouragement which needs no effort whatsoever from the Teacher. I prefer someone to show me what I did wrong as at least I would have an idea on what to improve.

This sort of thing is particularly hard on more abstract marking such as Essays and research articles that require personal views or commentary.

As a high school teacher I never return a piece of work with less than an 'A' grade without some indication of what was less than perfect and the areas on which the student should focus on in order to improve next time. I think one of the problems with universities is that many lecturers/tutors aren't actually trained in how to teach - they're academics, or even students themselves, and as such they may know how to lecture, but not necessarily how to educate. I agree with Kup. Towers, unfortunately in situations like these the only way to find out what's going wrong is to talk to the person marking your work. If I were you, I would point out the fact that the marking lacks constructive criticism, and hopefully next time they will have learned from their mistakes, even if their lack of transparency has meant that you've been no closer to finding out your own.

I suggest a short email requesting an appointment to attend said teacher/lecturer's office to talk about it. I don't think teachers/lecturers (or humans in any case) like being questioned or like the intimation in an email that they did something less than right.

When you attend said teacher/lecturer, ask open ended questions (but don't sound sore or bitter) like "I want to understanding what your thoughts are about my work"; "I want to better understand so I can improve"; "In your view, what could I have done better/differently to make the product better".

I'm not saying it always works, but when I did this back at Uni (with a genuine interest to improve and not just for the marks), lecturers often ended up giving me better marks on the spot!

A disappointing turn of events Odey :(,
I can already see you mother is going to get fed up fairly quickly with her lack of mobility but indeed she is at least able to go the toilet herself.

I think that most people hope that if anything serious enough happens to them or someone they know, they are able to retain some of their dignity i.e. dress, shower, feed and relieve themselves.

Just make sure your mum doesn't decide to go Ice Skating or Dancing in the immediate future dude :p, but again, I hope she makes a speedy recovery.

Did my ankle tonight really badly playing 5 a side - felt it click out then in again. It was about 3 hours ago and I still can't walk on it/am in excruciating pain.

It is mobile though (I can - very painfully - role and flex it, and wiggle my toes). I put some weight on it hopping in and out of the shower.

Also I drove home using my left foot (without incident) - apparently this is inadvisable?

Ankles are tricky joints, i know what your all going through i wish everyone a speedy recovery, and as hard as it is rest ice and elevation is the best thing for it.

ode i had to go through that whole learn to walk procedure, it is not an easy task, your body adapts to moving around to compensate, and it is hard work to retrain your limbs to move correctly, i shattered my knee (not quite an ankle) but for nine months i couldnt walk without the assistance of crutches after the couple of surgeries to rebuild it it was almost another 9 months to get it back to some sort of normal movement.

With your support i am sure your mum will make a great recovery!!

A former colleague of mine's husband is an electrician and whenever they throw out a large appliance like a broken TV or heater they always cut the cords because if someone takes it home and plugs it in, and they get electrocuted or something as a result, then the original owner of said appliance is liable.

--------------

Yesterday we had the Toy Story 3 meet... and there was this big family - two adults and nearly a whole row of kids - just talking throughout the entire movie. They weren't even whispering, they were fully talking. And not just the kids, but the adults too. The adults at no time asked their kids to shush - and often started conversations like asking if they needed more food or wanted to go to the toilet etc. If you really need to ask your kid these questions, why wouldn't you whisper?? Of course, we'd still hear the whispering since theatres are acoustically designed to transmit sound - that's why it's so easy to hear every whisper, chip packet wrinkling, coughing, mobile phones etc. from audience members - and why it's important for everyone to STFU during the movie!! (like DER, right?)

And surprise surprise, these unruly undisciplined kids are not only verbally ruining the movie for other people who paid to come watch the film, they're also being physically disruptive by moving about... kicking my chair. Going between seats and bumping me. Oh, and poured a cup of Coke and ice down my wife's seat. (-_-) Charming.

When I pointed out to the mother what her child had done with the Coke, she just shrugged and said, "Well there's nothing I can do about." Yes there is - it's called enforcing discipline... or better yet, don't bring your kids (who are clearly not mature enough to watch a movie in a public cinema where they're supposed to sit still for an extended duration of time)!! We don't bring our baby to the cinema. Since our daughter was born, either one of the three happens:
1/ We leave her at my parents place to babysit (as we did yesterday)
2/ We go to the drive-in.
3/ We DON'T see the movie! There are lots of movies I've wanted to see but haven't since our daughter was born (e.g. Sherlock Holmes - I still haven't seen it!!)

Yes, it's inconvenient, but that's what happens when you have a baby. Don't like it? DON'T HAVE KIDS! I cannot stand the selfishness of some other people who insist on bringing their infants or babies to movies without caring about the viewing experience of other audience members. It ticks me off more when _I_ make the effort to ensure that my baby doesn't ruin the movie for other people, but some other people don't pay the same respect.

I have no intention of bringing my daughter to a public cinema until I feel that she's mature enough to sit still and focus on a movie. If she starts getting unsettled, then I'd take her outside (rather than sit there and engage in a full conversation). If she ever poured her drink onto another patron, I'd tell her off there and then and make her apologise to the patron. Everyone in the theatre paid their hard-earned money to watch the movie and has the right to enjoy it in peace. Surely this is not a difficult concept to grasp.

If that happened to my wife, I'd go bananas, no I'd go ballistic. The parents are certainly not getting away with "There's nothing I can do about it".

I totally agree with everything you've said, Goki. You're a good parent. (Sadly, not everyone is.)

This has also happened to me more than once. Unfortunately there is little that can be done. Some parents just shouldn't be allowed to breed if they refuse to take responsibility / action for their child’s behaviour.

Back in the day, cinema staff used to 'patrol' the theatre and pull people up on things like this e.g. talking, putting feet on seats etc. Nowadays, they just turn a blind eye.

I have complained to cinema staff before and they did offer me a ticket for another session (which was nice of them), however I wouldn't be at the session I am at if I preferred another time.

This is a HUGE reason why I don't go to the movies very often. It always ends up being spoilt by some inconsiderate individual(s).

If there is a silver lining for you Goki, you get to go home... those parents have to live with those unruly children.

Cinema stuff

Dude, I'm being turned off going to the movies too. Last one I saw was ironman 2. Craploads of ads, followed by loads of previews, and people behind me coughing and sneezing and carrying on with their colds. Loved the movie, but I think I'd enjoy it a helluva lot more at home because since then I've gotten blu-ray and 5.1 sound to go with my 46" tv. I'd get a better experience at home now.

For less than the price of just two tickets, I can buy the blu-ray of the movie and fully enjoy that instead of having to put up with rude people. Hear that cinemas? Too much pre-screening crap and lack of ushers is loosing you to home theatres.

what really gets to me is people taking things out and putting things into plastic bags... that crackling sound just transmits so well in cinemas

Yep, great logic at work there, wait atleast 3 months for the movie to appear on a home format while everyone else has already seen it at the cinemas.

Works for me... especially when I can watch it in the comfort of my own lounge room without screaming kids / mobile phones / crackling chip packets / sticky seats / ads / people talking / people kicking my seat / 100% mark-up on sweets and drinks etc. etc. etc. ;)

I've got to agree. Maybe it's that we don't get as many rude people in a small town or it's better policed by the staff or maybe I'm getting old but my wife and I really enjoy a night out together involving dinner and a movie without the kids.

It doesn't really matter. Some people prefer to watch it in their own home, others in the cinema. Both have advantages and disadvantages. The key point is that you find a way to enjoy it.

I personally don't mind. The cinema's have bigger screens. I try to see a movie late in its run to get a pretty much empty cinema. But I do like to sit in bed and watch. Means I can pause it when I gotta pee or get more food

All I can say is - thank God for this thread. If there was no place to post our frustrations, I would go insane.

Spent the better half of this morning trying to convince a customer that a spreadsheet they sent to me was incomplete because they hid some of the cells. It got the point where I had to ask them if they were familiar with the alphabet because clearly A, C, E, W is incorrect.

I usually have the belief that if it wasn't for stupid people, I probably wouldn't have a job, but my threshold is only so much.

Stoopid crappy Centrelink appointment ran overtime, so I just missed the bank open hours.
On the plus side, there's an awesome bar course I might be able to do, but still - just ten minutes less and I'd have made it easy.

You could also vent that the banks close too early. Especially the commonwealth bank. They seem to close earlier then others

And? What is the point in seeing stuff right upon release? Really, please answer that. What could I possibly be missing out on? I thought I made it clear what I was missing out on. :p

And dude, I only saw the 3rd matrix movie this year for the first time. I'm not an impulse movie junkie trend whore.

I rarely go to the cinemas now for those very same reasons. I'll now go only if I think the film warrants a big screen and big sound (or I get free tickets :D).

Oh, so I guess that anyone who sees a movie upon release is a trend whore now is it? I guess that means anyone who watched Transformers in its cinema run is a trend whore then by your rationale. Or maybe, just maybe, there are some people who are cinema fans and like to watch the latest movies, in their original cinema run. But what would I know, I'm just a trend whore.....

But you know what, feel free to enjoy your movies in the comfort of your home, I'll do it at the cinema AND the comfort of my home.

You're not making any sense. Even your stab about "logic" made absolutly no sense to what I said.

Now about the movie junky thing, I mean I don't go and watch every single movie as soon as they come out. I thought that was clear, but I should have known better from your baffling post.

You still didn't answer my question either, do you just want to continue the fight you started? I'm not going to pretend to know what your problem is.

How about we just agree that some people prefer going to the movies, others prefer watching movies at home. Both have their pros and cons.

Now can we move on :)
