I've never seen Sound Of Music
You're missing out. Great movie. And so many references will have gone over your head over the years.
Agreed. It's a classic movie that's also based on the true story of the Von Trapp family during the Third Reich.

If anyone cares, this web page (http://www.archives.gov/publications/prologue/2005/winter/von-trapps.html) separates fact from fiction between The Sound of Music and what actually happened.

Man I just luv eBay's absolutely pointless global shipping program BS...

Weeks ago I bought a very expensive MISB Lego set from the US & all that's happened so far is that it's been passed around from one shipping company to another...

It's gone from FedEx passing it to eBay's global shipping centre in Kentucky. It finally arrived here in Sydney where it was then passed onto Daipost who then today finally passed it onto Auspost...

A year ago getting packages from the US would take a week but nowadays we're just paying more money for something that takes twice as long to arrive...

What a joke...

I have never liked the GSP from the very beginning because you can't combine orders and shipping which is the main reason I buy from overseas... and now everyone seems to be using it. :(

I know the feeling. Just the other day, part of my lawnmower catcher was bent down and digging into the ground as I was pushing te mower. Tried to bash that part with a hammer to bend back into shape but couldn't fix it. I was so annoyed I nearly gave up mowing after copious amounts of swearing. Then my wife suggests mow wiyhout the catcher. What would I do without her lol. And my father in law took the catcher and rewelded the metal part back on the catcher properly. And he helped replace our fence with colourbond and we put our garden shed up. Without him to help us on so many occasions, I'd be lost

I've spent the last few months trimming, cutting back and cutting down a good many trees in my yard, to neaten it all up and open up some space, as well as getting rid of some dead trees. Had a huge pile of branches and sticks, about the size of a large bedroom. Hired a huge mulcher, picked it up this morning with the help of a friend with a tow bar.

Worked my backside off this morning, got about 80-90% of it done, then had lunch. After lunch, the damned thing JUST. WOULDN'T. START. Called the hire place 3 times, no help. Took it back this arvo before it closed. They looked at it and tried to start it.

Worked first time.

They said I could take it home, finish the job, bring it back in the morning, no extra cost. So, my friend (who has other commitments tomorrow) has to help me out again. Good thing he's a solid guy and happy to help, but I'm feeling stupid at this point.

Get it home again. Start it up. It works!!!! Second thing I put into it gets jammed, the first jam of the day. Switch it off, unclog it. Can you guess what happens next?

...more driving woes...

Two cars are indicating to make an illegal right turn, obstructing the right lane and only leaving a narrow space for cars to squeeze past on the left. Maybe that's why it's illegal to turn right at that intersection? Anyway, I beeped my horn as I drove by and the driver from the car in front very loudly yells at me, telling me to fornicate and go away.

Really? He's the one trying to pull off an unlawful turn and he's yelling at me because I was inconvenienced by him... uh... huh?!?

And it never ceases to amaze me how many people seem to driving around with defective indicators.

Update: Still wouldn't start this morning. My friend was coming in 2 hours to help me tow it back. Called the hire place - twice - they send someone out to look the mulcher. Turns out there was a kill switch that NO ONE HAD MENTIONED IN ABOUT 8 DIFFERENT CONVERSATIONS OVER 2 DAYS. Cleared it, starts straight away. Job finished half an hour later.

On the positive side, they only charged me the 4 hour rate, rather than the 24 hour rate (despite me having it for about 28hours). All's well that ends well.

My vent for today - there is no part of me that doesn't hurt when I move.

Yeah mine can't be agented out....

When you get salary sacrifice or something, if you get 9k sacrificed, it looks like 18k.... "what you would need to earn to get the 9k"

Problem is the Tax man doesn't look at that... but the HECS man does.

So you put away 4% for HECS debt automatically, then HECS man comes along and goes "Hey there, you should have put away 6%.... GIMME GIMME GIMME!!!"

Wel really it depends on the reason. If they just decided at the last minute that they had something better to do, then yeah, not very cool of them. But if one of them developed a highly contagious gastro bug, then there's not much they can do about that and I don't think you'd want them there anyway.

So, as always, context is necessary ;)

I think I was just annoyed as I hadn't been awake long before the text came in and my wife had just started cooking all the ingredients for yet another large salad. And my wife told me later it was because their toddler was sick so they didn't want her to spread her germs so yeah it was a valid excuse. Most everyone else showed up. I hear ya M-bot. Yesterday with help from my sister's husband, we took down a 'wobbly' brick chimney stack that was leaning inwards. The mortor was like beach sand & all it took was a sturdy tap of the mallet to dismantle one brick at a time. The interior metal chimney component also came out without much fight. Hopefully the plastic sheet & sealant we put over the top will do the trick. We'll know at the next down pour.

After quick work of the chimney we thought we'll power through to clear a portion of the rear garden for the shed. What we estimated would take 1 hour actually took 3. In 30 degreeC weather! The homemade lemonade was good though. Feeling the sunburn today....

Next. Restumping by pros, gut & redo the bathroom and repaint the entire house inside & out & erect the garden shed.

Bought a bed for the kid a few months ago. We also ordered a mattress te same day from a different shop hat we were assured would be delivered no later than 2 weeks after. Fast forward 3 months and a million excuses and the mattress is getting delivered tomorrow. So this afternoon I left work early to build the bed frame. Turns out it was missing the centre leg that supports the slats. I rang the shop we bought it from and they said that I'd have to email their customer support and they'd mail me out a new one within 14 days.

I was far from happy with this as it meant that I'd either have to leave the bed in pieces and store a double latex mattress somewhere until this piece arrived or build the bed, drop the mattress on it and then pull it all apart again later. I tools them neither was acceptable and that I'd be down in the morning to claim the centre leg on their display bed.:mad:

They agreed and went to have a look to see if it was easily removable and came back to the phone saying that the 2 display beds they had on the floor were missing this leg too :mad::mad:

I've said this before and I'll say it again - when you're living in a country, any country - you should bloody well make an attempt to learn how to speak the local language. Aside from the blatantly obvious reasons of daily social interaction, I think that it's also a matter of respect that people should make an honest effort to understand a society's language, culture, traditions etc. You don't have to agree with it all or even like everything, but make a fair dinkum effort to understand it.

In Australia we expect immigrants to make an attempt to learn English, and I think that this is a perfectly fair and reasonably expectation. And it's really for that immigrant's benefit, because living in Australia and not learning English means that you automatically exclude and isolate yourself socially. Even if you manage to make friends and socialise within a migrant community, it's still isolated because you can't socialise outside of that ethnic ghetto. Your options are limited because you can only interact with people who speak your minority language, whereas learning the majority language allows you to freely move and interact with anyone. And some people say that it's rude or even disrespectful for people to live here and not learn English, and I think that's not an unfair call.

So similarly I think that the same standard must apply in other countries too. Living in Japan? Speak Japanese. Living in China? Speak Chinese. Living in the Philippines? Speak Tagalog. Living in the United States? Speak bad English (jokes!). :p Respect is a two way street; if we expect non-English speaking migrants to respect our culture and society by speaking English here or in other Anglophone countries, then we as Anglophones are obliged to also make a concerted effort to speak other countries' languages whenever any of us are living in a non-Anglophone country. It's just basic respect, doing otherwise is just downright rude.

I know someone who's been living in Hong Kong for over 5 years now and he still cannot even hold a basic conversation in Cantonese. He recently told me that he went into a store to buy a laundry marker pen and he said two words: "clothing" and "pen." That's it. Not even a sentence to try and explain the context of what he was looking for. So the shopkeeper pointed to where they sold pens and where they sold apparel. This guy just gave up and walked out of the store.

Earlier this evening I saw a lady riding past me. No lights, no helmet, not even sitting properly on the saddle (she was standing on one of the pedals) and riding on the wrong side of the road. I saw two cars that were forced to brake and manoeuvre to avoid hitting her. I repeatedly called out to this lady who ignored me and kept on riding. Thankfully she wasn't very fast and I was able to walk briskly to catch up with her (I didn't run and give the appearance that I was attacking her!). I excused myself as I approached her and tried to explain some basic road safety rules - i.e. that she needs to have lights on the front and back of her bike, wear a helmet and ride on the left side of the road. But she didn't speak a word of English and couldn't understand anything I was saying. So I gestured a lot to try and get my point across. I even tried to explain that police may issue her with a fine if they see her riding like that (although that was hard to accurately gesture). I hope she understood enough and doesn't continue to play stealthy-unhelmeted-chicken with oncoming traffic. :( Granted I have no idea how long this lady has been in Australia for... she may be a recent arrival.

Sucks, but what can ya do. Tbh, I'm fine, this time. I put myself into the situation because I was going home, so not even on duty. Every situation will be different than the one I had. But I'd like to think that my mind is too dark to have an adverse effect to death.

But I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

Or perhaps the family in Japan don't want his details publicised, I don't know. I searched on Japanese news sites and none of them have published his name either. Anyway, the fact remains that five people were horrifically murdered by a pathetic excuse for a human being.

Police have charged the accused with five counts of murder.

There is a theory that the great flood was actually real. It is frequently referred to in ancient writings and as it is referred to in the epic of Gilgamesh which is basically an older pre-biblical version of Noah's ark (just better written and more epic) with the flood and all.

I have always said that the Earth is never truly in danger of us but rather we are in danger of it. At some point the Earth will just throw a huge seismic event and wipe out much of the population completely destroying civilisation as we know it. Yes, humans will survive but they will be too few and no where near as skilled or knowledgeable enough to maintain and sustain technology, agriculture and society will just go back to tribes. Then even more humans will just die from warfare and disease (our natural population control) - This would pretty much reset Humanity back to the stone age.

Has there ever been a known instance in the history of the Earth where it has been capable of doing this? I thought the only way that an ELE is likely to happen is either man made (ie nuclear war), meteor or severe climate change.

My money is on self annihilation before we even get a chance to destroy the climate to the point of not being able to sustain human life.

Several times, one actually during our own existence. Check Sinnertwin's link for just a few instances.

The reality is that when we damage the environment, we are only hurting ourselves, not the earth. The earth would recover in just a couple of million years that to it, is nothing but to us is the existence of our entire species. There is nothing we can do to the earth that it can't recover from relatively quickly even if we nuke the entire earth. We would only kill ourselves and the present ecosystems that help maintain us. The Earth would then recover by creating a brand new one.

Humanity is both arrogant and stupid and as we have experienced with people, that is the worse combination.

Lord_Zed
24th January 2017, 09:28 PM
Yeah we treat our ecosystem pretty badly all those toxins we dump in the ocean and in the atmosphere, they don't disappear, the're all still out there.

Anyway if we're going to be all doom and gloom you don't need a meteorite or the earth for an extinction level event, the right pandemic would do whether man made or naturally occurring.

Not nearly as exciting as the other options though, but it would leave the earth relatively unscathed for the next species to come along.

I saw an advert today for the BMW Hybrid Car and also have recently seen people driving Teslas on the road - but there are arguments for and against the actual environmental benefits of driving "green" cars. But the environmental benefit of our move last year was that now that we're so much closer - 20km closer - to work, school, shops etc., we do far less driving than we used to, thus we're consuming much less petrol and emitting a lot less carbon. Although when we used to live farther away we always used the one car, but it was frustrating because my wife's working hours are quite different from mine. We use separate cars now, but the combined number of k's driven between both cars is still way less than the amount of k's we used to clock when we car pooled before the move.

Having said that, I heard on the radio today that Sydney is now the 2nd most expensive city for housing in the world after Hong Kong. A lot of people simply cannot afford to live closer to work. :(

My current job requires me to be at different sites daily, I always try to make sure where I'm living is 30 minutes from where I need to be. Parramatta/Northmead was probably the best location, at the moment I'm living in Lidcombe and getting to and from the central coast is a nightmarish gauntlet to run.

Sounds like you should keep off it, get those scans asap and then see a physio if it is muscular/ligament damage. Best of luck with the recovery. I once did my ankle playing rugby and was out for 12 weeks. Amazing how hard life becomes when you lose full mobility.

The chooks and local birds love it (the cockatoos and lorikeets sit on top
Of the chook pen and bathe) but the rabbits hate it until the water stops and then they love digging themselves a miniburrow in the cool dirt.

Except for the timer it was only about $20 all up to install and took about 2 hours mostly because I kept having my feet pecked by the chooks and it stupidly tickled while trying to drill holes in for the brackets. Timer was nearly $100 iirc.

But, no, I need that spot right near the door to park my SUV that doesnt get dirty, just so I don't waste that extra half a kilojoule walking my lazy arse an extra 10 meters.

Its either Morons who are over charging and you aren't allowed to comment on their sale price else risk getting booted, collectors who say look at my awesome g1 collection when its filled with KO's if you mention the KO's you risk getting booted or people who try and make G1 memes and have no idea what they are doing.

I am member of one that I largely ignore because there isn't much that's interesting going on.

Yeah, not fun but then again, most of the TF fandom is pretty awful in an inbred sort of way like the US boards tend to show us time and time again. I guess most online geek fandoms are like that too so I mostly keep to myself.

Be thankful you are on this board, seems to be the only one that survived the idiocracy apocalypse.

Yeah, this board is like a sanctuary from them. I'm really just a member of the groups for the photos lol but sometimes I just wonder what people are on. Long time collectors selling 'rare' stuff for $200 when you can get it for $10 on ebay.

I just don't accept many friend requests. it's Facebook, for me it's about nerd stuff and cute animals, I don't need real life or 'friends' outside my interest sphere clogging up my nerd feed.

I would not take anything away from not having a friend request responded too. Facebook friends are not necessarily real friends, there is crossover but neither automatically makes the other.

The awkwardness of the non-response is my concern really. I know it's only Facebook, but if people have better or not creepy ways of indicating to someone "I would like to be your friend" I'd like to hear it.

Australia Post are terrible. My most recent stuff up with them was my MP Optimus Primal from HLJ. He got all the way to the massive sorting facility at Northgate in Brisbane and instead of coming straight to Gladstone he did a tour of the state until he got here about 4 days late.

Still could be worse. A guy in German was sending a pallet of thousands of classic videogames to the US to have them all dumped (backed up and put in an archive) by some videogame historians (yes that job actually exist). Instead of delivering the pallet UPS (or it might have been FedEx) just delivered the shipping label from the pallet. The pallet ended up about to be sold at an auction like the ones on that Storage Wars show until a gamer that worked for the courier was able to piece together the news post on game sites about the missing pallet and the pallet that was in his companies warehouse. He was then able to get the pallet sent to the historian.

since yesterday I've been having troble with my iphone.
and nothing I try, or anything I find/ read about online seems to be any help either.

it figures right after I decide "you know what? I'm happy with this phone. I don't need to upgrade. that it turns into absolute garabge!

all my photos have vanished from it.
if I leave the photo app open long enough they'll slowly start to reappear.
only at some point the app will just crash
and when I re-open it, the photos will all be gone again!
worst of all is when that happens after the hour long process of restoring all my photos. and just as it finishes restoring. POOF
crash
back to 0, try again.

I read that it can be caused by having too much space used up on the phone. so I deleted almost all of my apps and my browser history and now have about 6gb of space. still won't restore.

and somehow by deleting all those apps. I've screwed up my app store as well, and now I can't re-download any of those apps. and I can't update any of the handful of apps I left on the phone.

on top of this the phone seems to run increadibly slow now. taking almost a minute of staring at a blank white screen before any app can open.

if I was a smart person I would have backed up my phone to my computer.
only I'm too paranoid for that after having an ipod as a kid and having it be wiped clean any time I plugged it into a new computer. I never feel comfortable plugging apple products into new devices.
but now I don't have the computer I originally plugged my iphone into anymore. and I am scared if I plug it into my current computer I'll lose everything from my phone like what used to happen to my ipod.

not that it really even matters since I can't back up files that aren't there. and I can't get the photos to restore for me. so I can't back them up.

and everywhere I look for help I get told "oh delete some data" done "oh hard reset" done "oh, take it into a Vodafone store" live too far away so can't do that yet. "oh, try downloading this sketchy third party program" done, didn't work. tried another, but it only works for mac.
I can't find any actual help
I can't figure this out
and I'm just getting more and more frustrated.

it seems the more I try to fix it, the worse it gets!!

I still haven't been able to restore my photos, I still can't install or update any apps. but even after turning off auto-update for the app store, the phone still tries to update them.
the phone is so slow now that it takes me at least 30 seconds to have the screen appear after pressing the home button. except usually I don't get taken to the keypad to unlock the phone because it somehow took my 1 short button press as me trying to use Siri.

most of my apps crash upon startup.

the battery drains super fast.

and even though I deleted almost all my apps and freed up 6gb of free space, somehow im back to only 600mb of free space

and while I was typing this, my latest attempt to restore my photos has crashed. so 30 minutes down the drain!

and nowhere I look sems to provide any results.

yeah, after all this crap I think I'm done with apple products too, this was my first iphone and was an upgrade from a really really lousy phone I had before it. but it definitely seems like I made the wrong choice.

I haven't synched this phone to a computer in long time. (my mistake)
so I don't know if that would be causing the issue.

Could be this. My iPhone did something similar a few years ago when I tried to turn on iCloud backup.

Should be Settings>iCloud and make sure it is off and it's off for all your photos and contacts, etc.

no way, there are several cards around that will allow for purchases in foreign currency at the actual exchange rate. I'm not sure about them all but I use the basic card from bank west. I save about 3 to 4 % of the purchase price by not using the pay pal exchange rate.

explore your options a bit.

I noticed this when I bought a humble bundle recently, I paid in AUD through Paypal but used my CC as the funding source and got charged an international transaction fee from CBA because the merchant/store (in this case humble bundle) isn't based in Australia. I've found that on my Commbank AMEX Paypal will charge from overseas, but on my Commbank MC they charge locally.

Anyway I called the bank to get clarification on how the international transaction fees work. Turns out on AMEX they are getting rid of the international transaction fees and I won't get them anymore after my new billing cycle starts, but MC still will have fees.

At that price, you would expect them to be of acceptable quality and to work well beyond a month past the one year manufacturer's warranty period. You have the right to have this defect remedied under Australian Consumer Law.

http://consumerlaw-staging.tspace.gov.au/files/2016/05/0553FT_ACL-guides_Guarantees_web.pdf

Click on the link above. Go to page 12. The price you paid is taken into account:

The "Test for acceptable quality" takes into account "the price paid—for example, a cheap toaster is not expected to last as long as a top-of-the-
range one".

I have had a number of items replaced after pointing this out to the manufacturer/manufacturer's agent (ie the shop).

Water drenching the carpet on one side of my boarders/housemates room. 3rd unit to do this in 3 years, and they had checked them all last time.... now there's no heating until I can get a plumber out. I can at least isolate the heating system from the mains so the rest of the house has water, and it is a separate boiler to the main hot water boiler too, so we can still have hot water.

I've had to pull up the carpet to dry it as much as I can.

This was supposed to be efficient and reliable. It's doing my head in. Seems just like when I get things right with the house something breaks

I think this time I'll get the plumber to use something extra on them all to ensure no leaks or breaks in the future

Double vent:

The 'tightarses who also don't like losing' phenomenon
I don't understand the collectors mentality when it comes to ebay sales. If you list a G1 with a 99c starting bid but offer a buy it now (BIN) option at $40, people ignore the BIN option and fight each other in an auction instead. 7-10 days later they almost always end up paying more when they could've just clicked the BIN to begin with.

In my last 10 years of collecting, I've found this to be the case about 9 times of of 10. I don't get it.

The 'Monash Freeway' phenomenon
This is one for the Melbournians. Monash Freeway outbound - I've found half of the motorists tend to speed in the 80km/hr zone, despite the many cameras. They could be anyone; middle aged, elderly, young, a family car.

Once the Monash enters the 100km/hr zone, these SAME people pretty much retain their traveling speed. They do 90-95km/hr. They block the two right hand lanes. I always cruise past these same people who zoomed past me earlier in the 80 zone. I don't get it.

The characters Two and Three are so well brought to life by their actors. I look forward to the next role Melissa O'Neil plays. Huge fan of hers now.

Update: ok so I couldn't find anything concrete to confirm this. However I'm convinced to watch Killjoys now so a little less sad.

Syfy has cancelled Dark Matter whilst on a cliffhanger season finale. Gdi I hate when shows get cancelled like that.

I have no idea about the show you're talking about but I had a similar thing with Firefly. I initially never watched it, then after years of hounding from friends I finally did, knowing that the series just stopped. I enjoyed it and was really starting to get into it. Then I went to play the next episode and it wasn't there, I had such a feeling of emptiness and loss. I know, 1st world problems.

I tried selling a few transformer items on Gumtree recently - I know exactly how you feel. It's a haven for low ballers, dummies, deadbeats, no-shows.

"$100 for this listing? Can I offer $20 cash?"

I actually like Gumtree. Sold a few things from there and one of them I thought would never sell due to oddity (Early Samsung TV 3D Glasses). Bought a few things from there too no problems.

However I have encountered the absolute opposite to low balling which is actually fairly common in the Sydney second hand market - Some dude trying to sell a 2nd hand item (regular, not collector worthy and common) at either at a retail cost or just a couple of bucks off. When you point it out, they refuse to shave off anything off and if they do, is only a couple of bucks.

Happens all the time with Gumtree, no matter what you list for sale and how reasonable your price is you will nearly always get some idiot that thinks $5 is a good offer on your $100 item.
Think of it like someone selling a brand new MISB TR Trypticon for $100 and then getting constant "offers" of $5 and you'll see why lowballers get to be annoying to genuine sellers.

"Oh this is no longer in stores so that automatically doubles the price, it doesnt matter that it didnt sell back then and I got it for 5 cents, the fact that it's no longer sold now and that you want it means it's rare and rare = valuable"
Don't even get me started on the ones that buy every copy of an item that they can to artificially make it "rare" and "hard to find" just so they can inflate the prices, absolute scum of the earth and one of the reasons I never got a nes mini and why my mate missed out on ordering a snes mini, because neither of us will pay some jerk $500 for an item that's barely worth the $100 RRP.

Actually what I encounter is not so much scalpers, just clueless people who don't understand what a 2nd hand market is. It is common in Sydney and why pawn shops and general 2nd hand stores are usually so terrible here. You will have say a person selling a 2nd hand item at a cost that is too close to retail value (and often above it) which you can still get brand new in store. When you explain that to them, they will not budge or shave off only a small percent like $5 out of $100 item for example.

The item will then sit with them for months and months without moving until one day some poor idiot will walk in and actually buy it and justify their cost. That's what happens.

Here we have very poor business practices from both sellers and buyers. There is no understanding on how 2nd hand items should be priced or refuse reasonable offers. Yet they can always count on some zap eventually showing up who is just as clueless and ends up buying it anyways. Vicious cycle and why we tend to suck so hard in Sydney when it comes to secondary collector markets and why overseas seem like paradises.

Guh... how stupid. If you think that a price isn't worth it, then don't even bother making an offer. Happens a lot with real estate! When we were house hunting we saw a lot of really nice places that were massively overpriced so we wouldn't even bother contacting the agent about it. And when selling our agent said that he received offers so far below our asking price that he wouldn't even bother telling us what they were. Basically agents won't even contact the property owner if your offer is well below what they're expecting to sell for.

It's common sense, isn't it? If someone wants to sell something for a certain price then they're looking at something close to it. Why waste your time making an offer that's so far below what they want? You know that the answer is going to be no. We know that housing is overpriced and sure, you could make low offers that are closer to what these properties are actually worth. But the seller is NOT going to accept that offer, so why bother?!?

If I were selling a toy and someone made a ridiculously low offer, I reckon that I wouldn't even bother replying. If people think that the price is too high then just move on!

Definitely as much stupidity going on in the second hand market as scalping.
Still I do come across the opposite sometimes, people that think their item is worthless because it's "used" and "old" and charge too little, if I'm buying and I have the money spare I will generally offer a little more, cause I reckon they deserve it.

Changing to another ISP before the NBN changeover is useless here. Every single port in Gladstone is owned by Telstra so even if I changed to someone good like Aussie Broadband it would still be on a Telstra owned port at the same congested Telstra exchange. Aussie Broadband even said when I called them a couple of months ago there was no point in switching before the NBN. Nobody else ever invested money into landline telecom infrastructure in Gladstone.

I checked the NBN rollout map of Gladstone. Looks like my suburb is the first old suburb to get the NBN and construction has started (I hope they keep to their published timeframe). There are some suburbs that have been built in the last few years that have the NBN already (some even with FTTP), but the vast majority of the population are on Telstra's ADSL infrastructure.

I'm going to give Aussie Broadband a call this week and find out how I can change over to them as soon as my house has the NBN made available.

On a related note - the NBN line is going along the back of our workplace's property, and they asked for us to clear the fenceline of our stuff for a week to give them access to dig a trench to lay some piping for the cable. That was four weeks ago, and they still haven't dug up anything yet.
It's no wonder the NBN is never able to meet deadlines for customers if they can't even keep to their installation schedules.

My mate lives in Greenwich, he asked the NBN guys to install into an existing Pit out the front and run the line up the driveway to the house, like all the other lines into their property.

they ran to a pit further down the street, then through the fence (digging up and replacing a section of the concrete sill under it) through the side and back yards all the way around to the back of the house to a point that is going to be hard for him to use.

My apartment isn't due for NBN for at least a few more years and we're near Epping in Sydney. we also have mediocre internet because of all the stuffing around they did with the street junction box a few years ago. we haven't bothered getting a streaming service because I have no confidence that we'll be able to smoothly watch stuff. we struggle with the free view catch-up channels...

In the last 2-3 weeks I have seen my Optus cable connection go from a steady 20-25mbps to just 5mbps or so during peak time with only very late night watchable on a work day.

My guess is that I was one of the early adopters of cable internet in my area so had a good run. However as the NBN has been indefinitely pushed back with no solid date, more people have signed up to cable. Naturally like all infrastructure in Australia, it is not enough to sustain the population needs so it gets bogged down in peak hours.

I wish I could be optimistic on that. We have a fixed rail system with very little room for improvement. For example, how many trains can you put in a single 'one file' line? We are not like other countries in which the rail network looks like a spider web with a lot of room for improvement, ours is just elongated branches coming out a centre.

When it comes to the Illawara line for example. If I want to get to the Sutherland shire, on average is an hour trip yet we re geographically not far fro the city. However there are so many stops on the way that makes the trip long. On top of that, since it is one line each way (as most of our rail lines are), there are ony so many trains you can have on it. That makes it difficult to envision a proper solution since our rail network had such little foresight in its design for growth.

Yeah same mate. I was getting 80mbps regularly until last year and now is is down to under 5mbps some nights which means netlfix doesn't work properly. My understanding from talking to people at the ISP's dealing with the NBN is some contractors in some regions are ahead of time but many others are behind and it really depends on your region and who NBN Co hired. Since the connection date has been recently moved up from June to March I'm hopeful whoever is doing the job here is one of the good ones. That said if this weather we are having keeps up it will delay it.

Been in contact with the ISP, they claim there is nothing at their end... very doubtful of that, as there is nothing wrong with the cabling and there have been no other changes.

It's a bit conspiracy theory, but I think because we are on an unlimited data TPG plan (the idea of having unlimited makes me laugh, at our speeds, we are severely limited!) we may be getting throttled when we are online in peak times and I think they don't care about our connection because we are on an "old" plan.

Regarding NBN speeds, most providers overfill their supply like people smugglers fill boats. That is often the cause of slowdowns and if it is, then you have to research this and change providers.

Oh, just noticed your location info says you're in WA. Any postage outside the eastern states can get really pricey.

That's why we have groups of people from Perth on these boards that do a group buy of Takara items to split the postage cost among many items. I bought my MP5 Megatron from an importer in Perth when he first came out, about $30 on postage for that if memory serves.

I did the same thing but thankfully both mine were sent. If the Grotusque limit was more than one that would solve a lot of problems for people wanting to order. While I’m on that track, Aussie retailers suck for not stocking these toys (and Titan Master Ramhorn) in the first place.

On Friday afternoon I got home from work and found a big scratch in the passenger side door of my car.

The thing is, I'm pretty sure I know who did it.

Last Friday, I had to park outside as a rare happening all the internal spaces were taken up. When I left on Friday afternoon there was a car next to me and I noticed the owner placing stuff in her boot while I was backing out. She is a very portly lady and at the time I reflected that there was no way she could have gotten out of her car in the morning without banging her door into mine as her car was very close. (the super frustrating part is there is no space next to the other side of her car so there was literally two feet of space that could have safely been used.)

The scratch is the same colour as her car and it wasn't there prior as far as I'm aware. I cover my car every night so I literally look at that door every day.

The door isn't perfect, it's got scratches and dings in it from other arseholes hitting it in carparks etc without leaving notes. but this scratch is about 6 inches long, straight up.

She has been at work over an hour now and hasn't approached me. I hate confrontation, and I am not sure I'll be able to confront her without losing my stack. This is the one time I've had the opportunity to follow up on a door ding, but is it fair to make someone pay for a door repair that is worse than if it was just the damage they did. (At some point there was a trolley impact that has actually deformed the metal of the door, I hate people so much).
We don't work together but we come across each other in the work kitchen, etc.

do I give her a bit more time to come clean, do I walk over to her desk and slap her with her keyboard, do I take it to HR? I can't describe how pissed I am right now.

Unfortunately, if she denies being at fault, there's nothing you can do if there is no video evidence.
The colour being the same will be considered coincidental - it could have happened on another day/weekend, by a same coloured car etc.

You basically have 2 options - either politely bring it up with her and ask whether she may have inadvetantly bumped your car (you cant flat out accuse her or you're the one who could end up in trouble with HR if it gets out of hand) or you go to HR first, repeat to them what youve posted here ask them for their opinion. Its likely they will say exactly what I've said. Remember also she may genuinely have been oblivious to any contact made due to a variety of reasons.

One thing you can do that might help is to go out to her car during the day randomly and check to see if her driver's door has any of your paint on the rim/edge where it would have hit your door. Sometimes there is a two way transfer of colour. If there is take a snap. Again I think it will get passed of as coincidental but it could help.

I've asked the site security officer if he has any good camera angles of that area of the car park. we're a defence contractor so our security is pretty well set up.

Borgeman is spot on. Without solid evidence it gets tricky.

You could always report it to your insurer (assuming you have comprehensive) and tell them what happened. They could go after her but I doubt it. You would probably just end up paying an excess and increasing your premiums.

Making her pay to fix the entire door; don't feel bad. Even if there was no damage to the door the cost would likely be the same anyway. They will need to replace the whole panel anyway so the other damage is irrelevant.

C'mon peeps. I'm not the only one who read that & :D.

... back to your situation. I'm perplexed with the 6-inch long scratch. Opening a car door normally would lead to a dint unless the car was moving. Could it be your car was keyed?

it's verticle, and very much a paint on door scratch. I've put some effort into buffing it out. I think its length might be an indicator of how hard the knock was. I'd post a pic but still haven't bothered setting up a photobucket replacement.

I have just been looking at security video with our site security officer. it looks like it's not the person I thought. there is no direct footage but it's a lady who only works part time because she spends the rest of her time caring for her (terminally ill I think) husband.

I guess I have a new feature on my car.

They both have a very similar appearance, especially if glancing at while driving... :o

I must commend you on having a cool head and not acting until you had the necessary evidence. Good job sir.

We had a plant hanging slightly over the footpath outside our house, it had flowers on and looked nice so I didn't bother cutting it hard back.

On Sunday morning I found the plant totally smashed and destroyed. Looking at CCTV we found it was a guy who went out of his way to stomp it to pieces. I wanted to post it on social media but my wife was scared he would come back and attack us at night!

Agreed. Destruction of property is such a low act.

If a kid rode their bike over it or something accidental I wouldn't have minded but the guy literally stopped as he was going past, looked at the plant then decided to stomp on it. So moronic and pointless.

The sign on the cafe shop front says ALL Funko Pop! Vinyl reduced to $15 each.

So I drop in this cafe & pick up the Pop! Vinyl Sesame Street Big Bird from the shop front glass window, take it to the cashier & introduce myself. After a bit of small talk, including mentioning I was an out of towner, the cafe owner tells me it's 25 bucks.

I pointed at the sign on the shop front glass window with emphasis on the word ALL. "Doesn't apply to larger ones" the cafe owner insists. "They're all 15 bucks each ... (pause) ... just not the one you want".

Here's the kicker. I've wasted his time by being in the cafe & having the nerve to leave empty handed, no food or drink either.
